With the way banelings work right now (infantry rape) I wouldn't be surprised really if a player DID lose their pool, but managed to just finish morphing some banelings to rape whatever units were attacking you, and then retaliate.

Well, we got our response here:
Which makes a lot of sense. It's easier to counter Baneling tech if they're separate buildings, and it creates options. Why are the Baneling Nest and Spawning Pool two separate buildings?

For all you know, a baneling nest could be in some corner of the map, whereas a spawning pool forcibly 100% of the time will be near the main hatchery.

Well if you attack the Nest while it's being built, it won't start at the hp of a pool, but at 0, since it's a new building. Thus it's faster to take down while in progress.

Unless you can actually KILL the nest (while your opponent will undoubtedly retaliate) while it's in progress, it won't make a bit of difference whether you attacked it while in progress of morhping, or after it finished morphing, because you still take down the same amount of HP either way.

Same can be said for the Ghost Academy and Merc Compound, and Cybernetics Core (Pylon) except they are both less expensive without the need of placing a Hatchery somewhere remote, for the Baneling Nest to grow.
Uncommon strategy is what catches opponents off guard, so if a Baneling Nest is remotely morphed, scout and scout some more.
