Vanilla runs on the same servers as the expacs. You just don't have access to the content.
Also, the changes that were made to the old world in Cataclysm also apply to the vanilla version.
I used to play WoW ( Started in BC, took a break in the middle of WOTLK, and came back for Cata ).
Imo, it's a waste of time. I feel like you have to invest huge amount of time into the game, for it to be a " fun and worthwhile " experience. Spending alot of time grinding materials for various professions, grinding linear dungeons. And more often than not, it's just a plain frustrating experience, with twelve year old morons ruining it all.
I really dislike the fact, that in WoW, you actually have to do alot of things you really hate doing, to be able to do the more fun stuff that comes with the game. Not only that, but you also have to commit to various things, such as specific raid schedules and what not, if you want to be in a more " serious " guild. It became too much for me ( and i wasn't even in a serious guild ), when i started to say no to hanging out with friends, telling them that i needed to raid this night.
Not worth it.
Also, regarding your bitching about SC2 on the bnet forums, i hope you didn't whine much about the multiplayer?
