I got into starcraft in the spring of 1999, also as a poor college student. A group of russian/eastern european possibly exchange students (guessing) had 4 player 1v1 LAN tourneys in the Math & Computer Science lab using good ol' spawn copies. I observed while trying to do homework for about 2 weeks, then got there early one day and commandeered on of the 2 computers with a full version installed (and cracked for no CD play). I played through a few single player missions (up to and including the rescue of Duke) when one of the tourney regulars caught me.

He and I played perhaps 20 1v1s, and I never beat him, but I was fully hooked. That June I bought a copy with my birthday $. Thus an addict was born...

On a somewhat related note, I got my bro and a friend into Starcraft, at least for a while. Nostalgic moment... I still remember my bro's comment to his first viewing of "I love you Sarge": "That's right, get it all out" with a smile and a chuckle. He has remained a gamer, but prefers fps type games, mostly Star Wars games in the Knights of the Old Republic vein (lightsabre duels). Even created his own clan and built his own server. Our friend is now a ju-jitsu instructor. Not sure about his gaming habits, if any.

I was... in the 6th grade. It was in March, so that was almost... 7 years ago.
My neighbor showed me the game and I fell in love with it. It was one of the first RTS games I got into. The look itself stylistically was really awesome, but I really loved the protoss, and archons (lol who didn't), and siege tanks, and how disgusting the zerg looked. That's it I guess, I got way more into it than he is.

I had friends in elementary school who played campaign, but for multiplayer I mostly played UMS maps, then switched to WC3 except for the occasional campaign replay. I didn't really play much in between WC3 being released in Grade 8 and university. In terms of actual competitive SC that came when some friends in Latin class back in first year uni invited me to "Starcraft Club", which was a group of guys who brought laptops to the campus bar to play SC.

Mine would have be due to warcraft 2, the hundreds of hours i spent playing that game on the original and best b.net was amazing. was in a clan that had some guys in our OP room with a SC as a icon so instantly i was bewildered so i went and asked around and looked online to find out it was a completely different game. luckily the next day my best friend was playing it and the thing that caught me the thing that made me addicted to it, Spawn More Overlords! the voice just amazed me and from then on i was a zerg only kinda guy. except for when battlefield 2142 came out, i was a Zerg/Walker kinda guy

A classmate of mine had installed the game on one of the school computers and showed me some of the cutscenes and gameplay.

I had to visit family in the Philippines that summer, and I got my mom to buy the game while we were there - I remember spending the evenings in the hotel reading the manual.

I couldn't play the game until we got back of course, but reading the story in the manual was worth it.

I used 2 play heroes 3 of might and magic alot with my friends when we where 10 so I already liked strategy games but this one day my friend bought sc1 and we would 1v1 each other and he would always win but I didnt care cuz I was so in love with THE GAME that just building and watching all the units was enough, mostly played zerg even if my friends wanted me 2 play terran or protoss cuz i was better at them! xD
