Thread: Playing random and being asked which race you drew.

  1. #1

Default Playing random and being asked which race you drew.

So I got to plat playing Zerg. No this is not a stealth brag, I knew 2 builds and my late game is awful, if I didn't win in the first 10 minutes I lost 90% of the time. Anyhow I decided, in order to get some more game sense and really understand what was going on with the other races, I would play random. Due to my debilitating terribleness at Protoss and Terran I have returned to bronze league after losing every match I didn't draw Zerg.

It has now become a regular occurrence that my opponent says "I didn't see your race before the match..." or simply asks "Race?", to which I state "Random."

This has netted me nothing but ire from every person who's asked. One guy said "Random isn't a race you stupid $%#@! I asked you what race you got @$$!%&*!"

Am I just getting the idiot contingent who's in bronze or do people really expect you to divulge this tactical information?

    What has been your experience?
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

I tell them either random or the race I got.

I never gets asked what my race was. And if they did I'd surely lie about it...unless they were a friend of mine.

The opponent has no right to ask you what race you got if you're random. The whole idea of random is that the opponent won't know what race he's playing against until he scouts you out. You could be cheeky and say "Come into my base and I'll show you." or something like that. But otherwise ignore them.

Personally I play protoss exclusively and if my opponent says the usual thing of they weren't paying attention at the loading screen and ask my race i just truthfully answer protoss. I see no reason to try to get some "surprise advantage" when I'm not a random player. Plus if a random tells me their race at the start I choose to ignore it because they could always be lying.:P

I'm not paying attention on the loading screen half of the time, but if you don't know you can check on the little alliance symbole on the top corner of the screen to figure out what was the race of the opponent.

More on topic, i have being asked only one time my race as protoss in diamond league. I answered random and the guys said ok. No bm at all.

But i also know that saying your race while playing random was common in SC BW. The matchs ppl where playing random where practice match so...

Now maybe a couple of person think they are back in the BW day, idk.

Hahaha, that's totally jokes. Talk about a sense of entitlement. What, do they want you to give them a free win as well?

I'd just lie about your race if they're BM again. :P

Some things to make note of:

I've played Random almost exclusively since day 1 beta. I've been asked what race I pulled maybe 2-3 times total in all of those games. Each time I answer "Human, Caucasian". You get some funny responses from that.

Another note is, I find it hilarious now when people ask race, cause the little box in the top right (which you use to share control) tells race as of a few patches ago. So if they missed the intro screen, or you have, there is a way in game to check it.

I used to get this all the time. They act like playing Random gives me some kind of an advantage. I quickly remind them that they play each race roughly 3x more than me and have the advantage of fine tuning their build orders and strategies far greater than I can because I usually forget minor adjustments by the time I get that race again.

Still, somehow, people either assume I'm going to cheese (and therefore make it very easy for me to win by doing some kind of stupid all-in) or act like that earlier scouting put them at a severe disadvantage.

Anyways, like Gifted, I'll either say something stupid like "Night Elf" or "Martian".

You are not alone, Sins. I got one of these a while back. I got my second Friday night. This dude gave me the polite "gl hf" note, I said "u2", then he asks my race. I didn't respond initially. He/she then says "not telling, eh?", then i type "random". A few seconds later my Overlord entered his base and he types "ah, zerg." Sounds pretty innocent, huh?

Well, at the behest of sliding off-topic just a little, this one got funny. A few game minutes later he says "I've got you now" and shortly sends 4 or 6 reapers into my natural (map is Scrap Station, I'm on the left, he's on right). Having seen his door was closed with the overlord that gave my race away, I had fast-teched to mutas and the first 5 were morphing, so I only had speedlings, but they were enough. I smiled my toothy predator's grin at my screen.

Moments later he tries a medivac drop of 3 more reapers in my main. The 5 mutas were out at this time and were reinforced with another 8. Byebye reapre attempt 2. He made one other remark I can't remember, being all high and mighty, but I followed the 2nd reaper attempt by sending my 13 mutas directly into his main, with 7 reinforcements morphing. No turrets and only a dozen or so marines as he was going some kind of air. Unfortunately his SCVs disappeared. He didn't give a GG, just an "oh danm" (spelled as he spelled it XD ). Lol. Sir "High and Mighty" was very satisfyingly showed the Loser's Door.
