Thread: Kiwikaki uses good mothership.

    Default Kiwikaki uses good mothership.

I've theorycrafted time and time again that the mothership is not an offensive unit, but a defensive unit to support a base/expansion. Kiwikaki felt the same way and pulled off a brilliant display of what I feel the "true mothership" can pull off.

As always Kiwikaki is an amazing Protoss. Doubt i'd use the mothership in that capacity.:P Looks cool and amazing and all.....but it just takes so long to make a mothership.

My personal theory I eluded to (which I've talked about a few times on the Legacy Observer stream) is that the mothership is about protecting a base and recalling back out of danger. Vortex to hold until your army gets there. and Requiring them to have detection to assault a base that would normally be vulnerable. In other words, base 3... which is about the time you'd consider the possibility of brining out a mothership.

This would allow you more of an ability to save your army, which is a vital skill to have as a protoss in high level play. This game epitomizes that theory.

*claps* That is actually pretty crazy. I was like "wtf? there was nowhere for him to blink"

Edit: Day9 actually has a daily with Kiwikaki vs Machine. Both games to include the first. Pretty interesting way to 4 gate a zerg.

Well while the MS is a nice unit for support, it is incredibly cheesy outside of PvP since Corruptors and Vikings are more commonly accepted as core unit for the standard matchup. The nicely timed stalker push was Machine's downfall.

The first recall was nice but it wasn't crucial as the Stalkers could have simply blinked out of the ledge and run back to safety. Without one single base Machine was very dead so he was forced to do an all-in which was also poorly done as the position on that last attack was terrible. He knew he was dead so he didn't care to put much effort into into his all-in. Just look at the Stalker count after that battle and the Mothership was still alive.

No way. I'm going to disagree with that assessment. Kiwi's stalkers were pinned inside the Zerg base. Sure, he could have blinked around the Roaches, but he would have taken massive damage. Not to mention, running away when the Zerg are on your face is near impossible when you're on creep, especially since the roaches had the speed upgrade.

Had he not had the recall, there's no way the stalkers would have made it out of the Zerg base without significant damage. It was damage enough that the Zerg would taken the game by marching his untouched army (even with the loss of hatcheries).

On a side note, kiwi seems to be really favoring the mothership against Zerg. I'm sure HD's vid of kiwi vs TLO was seen.

I disagree there, the reason you think that was because Kiwi blinked further inside because he had wanted to gather and tighten up his Stalkers for recall area. He could have also blinked to the left side or the south depending on the timing and depending on Machine's concave position.

Then he wouldn't have been able to take out the Lair. When the Lair went down, the roaches were already shooting, with hydras already up the ramp near the left side. If he blinked at the left, the hdyras would have free shots. Obviously blinking South wouldn't have done anything as the Zerg forces were already on his heels.

Plus, this chances entirely on position. Kiwi relying on the Mothership removed the limited positioning, because he could move his stalkers into the most advantageous position (away from the Zerg forces) without needing to worry about how to leave. Relying on your positioning is never a sure-fire. Pros still have problems getting the most advantageous position (its what Zerg is all about, among macro).
