Okay, zeratul knows tha "Samir Duran" is basically non-existant, it's just a disguise. He knows that the real mastermind behind the creation of the Hybrid is a "far greater power". Does Zeratul know wht this "far great power" is? No. Hence the line. That, and consider the fact that WoL does refer to both Dark Origin and Twilight. You heard right, and if you don't believe me, check out WoL manual:
    A FAR GREATER POWER

Upon leaving Char, Zeratul and the dark templar investigated protoss power signatures on an uncharted moon nearby. There they found several stasis cells containing protoss and zerg. Further investigation revealed that Samir Duran was using genetic manipulation in an unholy attempt to create the hybrid: creatures with mixed zerg and protoss DNA.

Most disturbing of all, however, was the fact that Duran’s attempts were
    proving successful.

Unmoved by Zeratul’s disgust, Duran revealed that he served a power far greater than Kerrigan and that the creation of the hybrid was the last step in a vast cycle that was approaching its end. Duran claimed that the hybrid, who were scattered on a thousand different worlds, were on the verge of completing their development, and they would change the universe forever when they awoke.
And here's a part leading up to Zeratul searching for the prophecy:
Memories of Raszagal have plagued Zeratul, and he was deeply disturbed by his encounter with Samir Duran. For years he kept to himself, racked with guilt and sorrow, until a valiant terran archaeologist in need of Zeratul’s aid sought him out and convinced him to emerge from his self-imposed exile. Since then, Zeratul has uncovered a revelation somehow related to the xel’naga, creators of both the zerg and the protoss. He has been seeking additional clues to unravel the mystery.

I have stood up for WoL several times, but this is something I won't defend. You can make up endless explainations to why Zeratul didn't mention Duran, but in the end, one is going to come out most logical: Blizzard wanted to please newcomers by not confusing them too much, which is odd, because in the manual they mentioned Duran.

I could have said, "Zeratul has had amnesia". But, come on!

I'm writing the story analysis right now. I will take a deeper look on the story on a superficial level (ignoring characters, gaffes, themes and presentation, as that will be covered elsewhere), as a review, almost. If anyone has anything they want me to comment, feel free to mention it. I don't think I will remember everything important myself.

I'm with Zeratul on this one... I still don't know why you all assume it was Duran who created that Hybrid, and I'm certainly not comfortable making that assumption, knowing as I do that there are other people also creating Hybrids.

No, we don't know that Duran created the Hybrid. But Zeratul said, "A Protoss/Zerg hybrid! Gods, an abomination! Who created this atrocity?" What if he added, "Could it be Duran?" He still doesn't know it, but at least he questions it and ponders the possibility. He could also have said, "Is this Duran's work?" Assuming his dialoge are his thoughts, wouldn't it be fair to include it?

By the way, FT, you will be included in the story analysis because of your thoughts. In a positive way, of course.

He could have said it, but then, there's really no point to adding it either.

From a purely "technique of writing" standpoint "Gods, an abomination!" is the part that makes the line weak. It's not a characteristic utterance for Zeratul, it doesn't fit his speech cadence (imagine Yoda saying "Fuck you, Bitch!") and generally breaks the rhythm of the line.

And last of all, it makes Zeratul sound like an old spinster horrified at seeing a copy of "Playboy" on her table.

All other criticisms still apply of course.

If he said that, then it would just confuse people and Jim at the same time, because Jim doesn't know anything about duran (and zeratul barely even knows him either). and it would take a while to explain him, which would take us out of the scene that's happening right now (which is the fact that there's a hyprid on the planet taking the powers from protoss elders).

plus that would be a poor way to re-introduce duran, just by saying his name. i think it should be more unexpected, and shocking then just showing he's creating more hybrids.

Eivind you do realize that there is an edit button to your posts right? Maybe you should consider using it instead of constantly double and triple posting.

That's quite easy to explain actually.

The first time we are introduced to concept of Hybrids, at least in the games, is through Duran. In the Dark Origins mission he is also set-up as being the current head-honcho/ preeminent authority when it comes to affairs regarding Hybrids.

For I have seeded the Hybrid on many, many worlds. You will never find them all before they awaken... And when they do... your universe will be changed... forever.
Up till the introduction of DV, there's no 'other' character that is involved with Hybrids. You can assume there are others involved with Hybrids aside, but the way Zeratul speaks does not imply this. It's much more natural to assume the Hybrid may have come from Duran than it is from someone else.

All this doubt and confusion could've been easily fixed with just the ommission of "Who created this atrocity?"
Yes, that's right! That is indeed ME on the right.
