[Random Thought] Different BNet Rank for each race?
I was thinking about rank and match making on BNet and how it might discourage people from playing with their off race.
Most players have their best race and have less skill with the other two. If I am primarily a Protoss player, I might never risk the ranking on my main account by playing a game with my worst race.
If I had 3 different ranks on one account then I could mess around with my off race while not playing people ranked equal to me at my best race. It would allow me to find equal levels of competition no matter how bad/good I am with each option.
I know that if people play all races often then their ranks will probably even out, but I am thinking about me... If I play Protoss 95% of the time, but decide I want to mess around with Zerg one night, I don't want to play against people equal to my Protoss rank. Could I be level 20 with P and level 10 with Z?
Does War3 or ICCUP do anything similar to this?
Thoughts/Opinions?

Would make things too complicated, and it wouldn't be fair to the people who are using their best race against the worst race of a player who is far more skilled than them.
Just keep things simple. The way it works in WC3 is mostly fine; I don't see the need to change it a whole lot.
People will always stick to their best race when a game has bearing on their record / ranking. Practicing in custom games is what you should do to make your lesser races less of a liability.
B.Net profiles will display record with each particular race and that will be enough.

In terms of personal rank, I feel that it shouldn't be judged on a per race.
In your stats, I WOULD Like to see your match breakdown however. I would find my PvZ ratio a lot more interesting than just my protoss win/loss on 1v1. I know it can't be done in terms of 2v2 or higher.

I'm not sure what to think about this. Maybe you have total wins, and your profile also keeps track of wins with each race... But your overall level on Bnet is still based off your total record (all races combined)?

We will all have lots of losses on our account. In fact, if the ranking system works well I should lose 50% of my games when using my best race.
I would like to also lose 50% of my games with my worst race, but that would involve having multiple rankings per account.
Thats the best part of a good ranking system, if it works well it will always put you in a category of people who will beat you half the time. If you win more often, you go up a level, if you lose more often you go down a level. Until it finds that "sweet spot" of equally skilled opponents. I want to have that level of competition with all 3 options, not just my best one.

I actually have to say I agree with Pick. I'd like to have different rankings for my different races or a very definite "this game will not affect my rankings" kind of thing.
It has nothing to do with your W/L record, it has to do with finding opponents at your skill level. I think Pick summed it up perfectly. Let's say I'm great P player, but terrible Zerg player, but want to improve my Zerg skill. The best way to learn and get better is to lose, of course, but not to get completely smashed. Using ICCUp rating, if I'm an A- Protoss but a C- Zerg, I don't won't to take my C- Zerg against an A- opponent because I'd get creamed and would learn nothing.

Good point.
If theres a break down of wins and loses with each race or on and race v race basis there should be no need for multiple ranks, lets just hope Blizzard implements a fairly in depth stat breakdown.

Never thought of it that way. You know, maybe "rank" is a bad way of putting it. I can think of an excellent way of doing it, as you said here: a matchup can be based beforehand based on the race you choose to use -before- going into a match. Bnet analyzes your record with that race and pits you against people with similar W/L with whatever race they're planning to play. That could even include random, if you so choose, in which case an "overall" skill thing might be advisable.
Not sure, really. Let's just hope Bnet2 has a good system.

It couldnt be that complicated of a thing to implement really I don't think its just gotta spit out a average based on your wins and losses with each race or against each race etc
