Hey guys, since we don't have a discussion here on this massive event which I'm sure a lot of us are very excited for, I thought I'd get the ball rolling!
Here are just some cool things which I'm just gonna copy and paste from TL :p:

That's RIGHT! ZERGBONG, now known as NesTea, is in the Ro64! I'd personally like him to win just for the hilarity! XD
FOUR foreigners made it into the ro64! Idra, TLO, Artosis, and Torch! Considering how few foreigners even made it to Korea for this tourney, I think this really shows that the Koreans aren't as far ahead as they think they are in terms of skill.
If there had been an equal number of foreigners and Koreans competing for places in the Ro64, I'm sure that we'd see foreigners securing a fair share of spots.
Again, here's another breakdown of the Ro64 players:
Definitely interested in seeing this kid play! Only 13 years old and in the ro64....my goodness 0_0.
And now, for a message from the Global Manager of GomTV:
Quote:
I know that many of you are anxious to see replays, however there were about 1000 contestants for preliminaries and as we were trying to get it over in two days, we didn't have the luxury to provide them.
But stay tuned! The opening match will be held on 4th of September which is next saturday at 7pm KST. 16 players out of those who made it RO64 will be playing that day, which we plan to broadcast. Those who do not compete in the opening match will have their match at our studio, and their games will also be broadcasted.
Rar! No replays or vods for now it seems, but on the 4th of September, we'll get all that good live stuff! Bring it!
Who are you guys rooting for? Who do you want to see TRIUMPH IN THE FIRST GSL TOURNAMENT?
I'd like to see the foreigners go far! Particularly, Idra and TLO. However, like I said, I'd also like to see Zergbong up there :D.
I also think it'd be very good for the community as a whole if a foreigner won this GSL. It'd tell Koreans that they've got real competition now, and it'll let foreigners know that the whole world can compete and encourage more global events, hopefully!
You know, I watched CellaWerra playing on his stream (when he was playing 'proper' games, not the smurfing he sometimes does :p), and I have to say that I don't think he's as strong as Idra. I haven't seen as many games of other famous SC2 Korean players, but if Cella's any indication, they shouldn't be a whole league above a player like Idra.

Who is zergbong? o.O
Also, the game is quite new so people are still improving on the skill department. Current skill level is probably barely c on iccup.
I really like tester and his playstyle, so I want to see him do well.

as i like to say, TEE-EL-OH! HERE-WE-GO!
... it feels cool to have seen him play enough, to know that its quite unlikely that hell hold back on his creativity on any level. seeing him go far would be epicly entertaining and great for the scene everywhere! :)

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
Zergbong was a former proteam coach I believe. I'm very excited about this tournament but I wish gomtv would update their english site rather than having to scour tl all the time for translations. I'd really like to see some of the korean players in action for some variety. It was great watching Tester emerge and absolutely dominate. I'm a big fan of idra and TLO but I'm also a big fan of great games. I'm very happy with tasteless and artosis commentating but sdm really grew on me, especially with all his insight of what goes on behind the scenes

This just in from GomTV:

I am aware that I mentioned there is a possibilty we will provide low quality streams for free as we did for BW Gomtv Classic. However, for GSL all streams and VODs will be charged. There will be two versions, a high quality one and a low quality one. You can choose depending on your computer and internet performance.
By the gods, this is ill news indeed! I was looking forward to watching the stream for free :(. Some people on TL think that there'll be a free Korean stream sans English commentary by Artosis and Tasteless, but I don't know if that's certain.

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
lol just after I complain about them not updating their English site it's updated. They listen to me! :P
I bought the premium pass for Intel Averatec S3 and I'd happily get the same for the GSL, except despite having a 20Mbit connection I can't surpass 200kb/s to their servers.
Paying for such events is absolutely fine in my eyes, as it's great entertainment and it supports e-sports and SC2.
Edit: It was $50 for S3, and only $20 for a live pass for the GSL. Fairly cheap for >150 games of the largest SC2 tourney to date.

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
It shows a failure to understand their market though. IIRC and the information was true (TL mods), the matches are broadcasted for free on Korean TV so the only people that HAVE to pay are Westerners ... who will be mostly be asleep at five in the morning.
Plus paying 30$ for something that I have no physical copy of, and, therefore, will have to maintain my own backups (if I can even download it at all), is a bit troubling especially since it'll be free later. 5$ I'd do in a heartbeat, 10$ I'd think about. 30$ I will never do. Ever.
-- Also, how long is a season? I'm reading that each ro64 is a season which means it's about a month ... that can't be right. 240$-360$ a year? That can't be possible.
-- I found an official answer. The first season ends October 2. It was bad enough thinking 30$ every year or six months was bad but .. a month? I hope GOMtv burns :(

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
Well speaking for myself, Korean time is one hour off my own so it's no problem for me there. Watching some of the best players in the world for a small fee is totally reasonable to me. Even if they had free streams, I'd still get the premium one.
Judging from TL polls though many people aren't happy about the pricing and aren't prepared to pay, which I suppose is fair enough as a large number of SC2 fans are <18 and students. For me though $20 isn't a big deal and I feel giddy inside about supporting things I like. :P

Considering that I pay $150/month for my ADSL2+ connection, have a $3000 computer and spent over $250 on SC2 and related products so far, it's probably not. :P

I guess I'm just used to NTSC benefits :D I paid 750$ for my PC, paid 40$ for my 8MBit internet, and paid ~170$ for my StarCraft standard and CE editions.
(I'm assuming you meant it was not a problem.)

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
Unless I'm mistaken, in roughly 29 hours from now, the first matches of the GSL r064 begins!
Idra (Z) vs JiTaeHunZenith (T) followed by MakaPrime (T) vs Focus (P)
Quote:
Maps for the Opening ceremony matches have been decided.
As you know, maps are drawn by GOMtv.
Following maps are chosen to be excluded by each player before the drawing.
- Greg Fields [IdrA] : Kulas Ravin, Lost Temple
- Tea Hoon Ji [허준과침제니스] : Blistering Sands, Meta Opolis
- Han Eul Kwak [MakaPrime] : Desert Oasis, Kulas Ravine
- Hyo Seop Eom [BEV] : Desert Oasis, Blistering Sands
MATCH 1. Greg Fields [IdrA] vs Tea Hoon Ji [허준과침제니스]
- SET 1 - Xel'Naga Caverns
- SET 2 - Desert Oasis
- SET 3 - Scrap Station
MATCH 2. Han Eul Kwak [MakaPrime] vs Hyo Seop Eom [BEV]
- SET 1 - Delta Quadrant
- SET 2 - Lost Temple
- SET 3 - Scrap Station
I find it awesome that they call Metalopolis "Meta Opolis" :D.
Also, it's so funny how as a Zerg against a Terran player, Kulas Ravine and Lost Temple are just auto-unpicks :p. Poor Idra - doesn't get to pick any maps he feels he may actually like because he's forced to pick the two maps which are almost auto-lose for Zerg :p.
I feel kinda bad that that might be the case for all Zergs in the GSL =/.

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
I dunno, I think idra got about as good a map pool as he could possibly hope for, except for possibly desert oasis with reaper play. If he can squeeze a win on one of the first two maps then he'll have a good map with scrap station.

I know that the other maps aren't bad for Idra - I'm just commenting on the humour that instead of picking the 2 maps he likes the least, he has to pick the 2 maps which Zerg just die on :p.

Now, the low-quality stream can be accessed free of charge! Only the high-res premium stream will have a fee attached!

Dear our valued user,
This is GOMtv.net Support Team.
We’ve found you purchased Season Live ticket($19.95) via Paypal and we are sending this email to inform you very important issues.
We are sorry to say this, however, we would like to let you know this information as soon as possible.
As you know, we do not have free streaming service on GOMtv.net.
Since our service has been opened to public, lots of e-sports fans have requested for the free streaming service.
We’ve thought this issue over for the last few days and we’ve decided to release the free service for the users.
Therefore, we will service 1 season premium ticket which includes VOD service and Premium Live service, and the price will be $19.95.
With premium ticket, you can watch High Quality(500K) streaming live matches and VODs.
Free service is the Standard Quality(below 250K) streaming live only, with no VODs.
You can ask a refund if you are not happy with this new premium service.
However, if you keep your purchase, we will reward you the premium ticket for 3 pre-seasons which is valid for all season in this year.
Please reply to this email if you want to refund your VOD ticket before the first live broadcasting starts(at 7pm KST).
Otherwise, we will consider that you keep your purchase and accept the premium service for 3 pre-seasons.
Ironically, I feel far more inclined to pay for it now that it's optional and money given to them would be almost charity to support eSports.
Looks like GOMtv is going to be better than KeSPA. KeSPA would've NEVER done this.

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
Oh well I've still got my premium stream. Still, it would be nice if they upped the quality of the premium stream. Not exactly high quality by modern standards.
KeSPA never had English streams in the first place, Tychus, so I'd say you're correct!

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
I hope they give you a refund or upgrade your subscription since you paid the same new price of the whole stream and VOD package.

KeSPA as an organization never made money from the scene in the first place. So I'd say you are correct. The organizations that make KeSPA only get PR from it. In fact, I don't remember ever having been asked to pay for a KeSPA-event stream.

If you stick with the ticket you purchased, then you get awarded with a "premium ticket for 3 pre-seasons which is valid for all seasons in this year" :]
EDIT: Who's watching the opening ceremony matches live? I am! In case some of you folks are unawares, we get Idra action right from the very first match :D.

Re: Interesting GSL Updates!
They could broadcast the GSL on Ustream or Livestream with better quality than their 'high quality' stream. I'm not impressed. I'd expect 480p at least for the regular and 720p for the premium.

Anyone else having problems with the web based GOM player?
from reading others complaints, the older version of the gom player runs the vids (and i guess the steam) fine, but the new and only available download of the (English) player now, makes the web-vids unviewable.

You have to watch it on the gom player or paste the link into VLC, it isnt streamed like youtube or ustream
