Apologies if there is already a thread about this, I looked and didn't see one.

Hey, Don't Run Unauthorised World Of Warcraft Servers, OK?
Because if you do, it'll cost you $88 million.
That's how much Scapegaming's Alyson Reeves was ordered to pay Blizzard following a court case, in which Reeves was found guilty of charging users to play on an unauthorised World of Warcraft server.
Over the years, she'd amassed over $3 million from these unsuspecting players, which forms part of the enormous settlement. The other $85 million? That's for statutory damages.
You silly kid! There may be plenty of money in World of Warcraft, but that's Blizzard's money, not yours!
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million

*She.
And I think that's the entire point, it's Blizzard's way of saying: "Don't screw with us or we'll bury you forever."
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million
I read "Blizzard," but I feel "Kotick."
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million
Here's is the lesson for today children: Don't mess with Blizzard or you will be screwed over in debts.

Running private servers AND making money from said private servers? Seriously. They made $3 million off of somebody elses game, they deserve all that they get from Blizzards fury.
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million
Indeed, it's like selling pirated movies. Your in for some big trouble.

I could understand 20-25 million in reparations, maybe. But 88? That's a fuckload.

lol my bad, well at least people will know not to mess with Blizzard
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million
Wow, I bet she was feeling pretty balling after amassing 3 million.
Now she probably feels like committing suicide.
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million
Who knows the actual details of paying that off.
But you're not only running an illegal server, but your MAKING A PROFIT.
if there was no money involved, a CnD would be all it takes, however when you throw money in it's = theft and piracy.
Dont screw with blizzard motherF**
BWAHAHA

I guess the whole point is to send a message. Even if they sued for 20-25 million they'd never see the full amount anyway, so at the end of the day there's no difference apart from getting their point across. Charging people for a pirated private server was already dumb in the first place.

How could she pay even 20 million? 3 million is probably all that she has, MAYBE 3.5 million. 4 million+ would likely require her to declare bankruptcy anyway (hell, she might not even have 3 million depending on if she spent it), so just make it a huge sum of money to scare other people away.
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million
The courts decide the penalty not Blizzard, at $200 for every illegal player on the server it's gonna add up very very quickly. Profiting from someone else's work is illegal, I know I'd sue if someone did it to me.
Re: Blizzard Sues Woman For $88 Million
The lady who owned the server actually had a team(guys who actually coded something on the server), and the said 3 million was actually "donated" by players to improve server stability, performance, maintenance, etc...
But the other members of her team found out that she was spending all that money for herself - egoist b**ch. Then the guys quit, and i heard that the owner actually wanted to take some sort of "legal action" against her former team :) - now thats what i call complete lack of basic intelligence : she steals a well known product, make money of it and after that she is the one upset? I dont know if i have to cry or laugh over this nonsense.
i found a video on youtube that explains what was goin on at scapegaming :

holy crap, people would rather donate money to play on pirate servers then play on official servers?
3 million in donations, that's a lot of money.

wait wait, just 200$ per person? Cause that's 44,000 players that was on scapegaming, I find that kind of hard to believe, given the dense amount of "free" WoW servers.

During the lawsuit, Blizzard also reported that Scapegaming had around 427,000 member and that 40,000 players would be online most of the time.
Just sharing a relevant quote to ensure the correct numbers were understood. It's also important to note that the lady in charge of this server didn't even show up to the court meeting, ensuring an easy win for Blizzard uncontested.
Re: Blizzard sues unauthorised WoW Server owner for $88 million
I read "Blizzard" but feel "smart people".
Scapegaming was run by a bunch of crooks. Sometime ago, a hacker hacked their records and found that they had received millions of dollars in donations but were still complaining that no one was donating and that they couldn't upgrade the servers. I'm glad these fuckers got taken to court. I always hated them.

Let's make the message simpler:
