So how many people out there are doing the brutal difficulty setting? I am and it is one tough nut to crack. Alot of the missions will likely result in you losing atleast once.

I did a few then realized all of the achievements only really require hard (and are exceedingly difficult to do on brutal), so I will get those all out of the way then reclear on brutal.
My first playthrough i did Brutal difficulty and i found it underwhelming, i could pretty much M&M every level and win. (I didn't every level of course but whenever i did it was extremely easy)
The campaign never forces you to expand. I think that's a major flaw in its design. With unlimited selection M&M along with no need to research tech at all makes it a swiss army knife tactic.
The whole concept of not forcing a player to expand is teaching the player a bad lesson and that's something Brood War didn't do at all. You had to attack some spot early and secure resources to get good enough footing to finish the level.
Yup, i totally agree, starting with a bunch of tech and never having the opportunity to expand means i build my 21 or so SCV's and never build another (for minerals at least) with merc building thrown into the mix the only challenge i ever encounter is trying to get all the research opportunities before finishing the main objective.
Beat it on brutal.
I did not M&M much, I usually tried to mix things up since it's just single player. I wanted some flavor in my units. Contrary to the above posts, you do indeed need to expand if you use metal.
A lot of the bases are not adequate if you are going metal. I had to in almost everymap to make my legion of siege tanks and vikings.
You guys just cheesed it out with M&M.
Brutal becomes ridiculously easy once you have access to Sci Vessels. Sci vessels + Mech is the new medic-marine. Once I got the sci vessels, I literally demolished every mission afterwards.
Yepp same here, just battle cruiser everything
Else I just did medic marine
Love the missions where you really have to be a little different tough like train robbery
I think the op is aware of that in some missions you actually do need to expand but overall this negligible or expanding is not a risk or choice but rather something that you will progress into
The Tosh mission terrazine thing require you to expand if you attempt to murder the protoss base in brutal. Still, I use a lot of resource on useless stuff like mech and my cool perdition turrets. :D
I was just saying M&M is all you need to do to win, i never said that's all i did.Quote:

I'll do it someday. I did it on normal just for the story. I'll probably go achievement hunting first, then do a Brutal clear.
Brutal difficulty is the only difficulty
it might be mostly me being disorganized, but i feel forced to expand plenty.
yeah, i feel its a bit steep in between hard and brutal though.. iv switched down to hard a few times - getting bored by the repition required to get through a tough one sometimes, but then, its just a breeze... i think the gamespeed is lowered, adn that along with all the otehr parameters that scale with dificulty setting makes the differance quite huge.
... whts off-putting about playing on brutal is just that; how fast the gamepace is.. i went in to the campaign wanting to get real nifty with tactical ambushes, sneaky reaper use, etc, but other than in some covert ops missions, there is really no time or room for that... these nifty tactics simply arnt rational options to brute force. not on the high speed settings that make it impossible to commes close to optimizing multitasking.
... so yeah, i could slow down the game by lowering the difficulty, but im sure that would remove all challenge.
... well, it aint over till the fat lady singe; i have only played about 18 missions.
about achievements, at least there's achievements for completing certain numbers of missions on Brutal; i got the one for 10. dont know if there are more.
I'm playing on hard the whole campaign, when i finished it i will replay the campaign on brutal. I dont like to rush through the campaign . i want to indulge myself in it :)
You guys beat it on brutal already? Damn. I'm still on like mission 7 or 8. :P
actually, i get waht you mean by the expanding thing now; by the time i've cleared an expansion, the main base is pretty much running out anyway.
True. That was disappointing but you don't have to use them and that certainly doesn't make the difficulty too easy otherwise.
Hell no, I accidently typed ''terrible terrible damage'' just to see if it indeed was a cheat, and I was getting all the achievements in brutal dificulty when damnit ''Start a new campaing to enable achivements again''. So no, never in my life going to try to beat the game on brutal.

If I've heard correctly, all you have to do is run a saved from before you used the cheat.
Brutal difficulty is actually pretty fun jeje I get really inmersed on the game :P
I got 3300 kills on the last Protoss Prophesy level on Brutal ;)
I haven't tried Brutal yet. I've been achievement whoring.
Haha, really? I just got there last night and when the masses start pooring closer to the archive time being up, I always lose somewhere around 2100-2300. I was too stubborn to restart last night since that's most of the fun but I'm going to retry it this morning.
Hopefully, I can beat it :D I'm really looking forward to finally beating the campaign.
I also saved the archive ;)
PS: will post replay soon, if SP replays exist :)
Saving the archive isnt so hard, but 3300 is impressive. I had like 2850 or something and I actually ran out of resources as I had completely mined everything out.

Anyone know an easy way to do the supernova mission and still get all the relics?
Easier than what? How did you play it?
At first I tried just getting 4-5 banshees and a viking to grab relics, maybe snipe a pylon or too, but that didn't work out too well on the last relic. Had 4-5 marauders, 7-10 marines, 2 medics and 3 medivacs to take out the base and move the ground force around to avoid the fire, but as soon as I tried to hit the relic the medivacs got sniped, and everything just died.
Good lord. I barely beat that.
I laid the entire map in cannons and had a legion of Immortals/Collussi/Air/All the heros.
But in the end, I had too many cannons and they cluster-f'ed all my units.
Shit began to crumble REAL fast. In the end, all I had was Artanis and I was at 2495. I just flew around the map desperately trying to find 5 zerglings...I got the last zergling a second before Artanis died.
Though I did save the archieves...I wish I had just gone a little longer..like 3500 kills :D...oh well.
Yeah this campaign's difficulty is definitely "Brutal" on brutal. Some maps its like "Wow I basically have to restart from scratch because I'm FUBAR"
In between multiplayer fun...I'm going through the campaign on hard. Still at it. Not in any rush really. It's gonna be a long time before we'll see Heart of the Swarm. :)
EDIT: that last Protoss mission is a ball-buster on hard...can't imagine the thing on Brutal.
GAHHHH The last mission is impossible on brutal
Don't worry it'll probably be the same for me^^
I haven't gotten started on brutal yet since I'm back to multiplayer now and enjoying playing some random, but I know I'll take long breaks between each game on brutal because I get so bored when I have to set up my army before rolling out... That's the main problem I've got with RTS campaign modes (not SC2's single player, solo games in general): you aren't restricted by time enough.
It's like you don't really need to play better to achieve something you failed on your first attempt, you just have to be more patient.
I'm probably just half away from finishing brutal, but it takes me hours to move through a single mission. The easiest mission I have played in brutal is probably "Media Blitz".
Aswell, playing on burtal gives you the confort of getting normal and hard achievements in BRUTAL, wonder if there's an achievement for finishing brutal campaign.
As well, do you guys think there might be a secret if you get over 9000 kills on the Protoss last stand mission?
