Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
I just lost my internet connection for two straight hours. I tried to use the editor, can't. Tried to play offline, it says, I need to authenticate my copy.
What in the world does that mean? And how do I do that, so that, whenever I need to spend a day or two away and without internet connection, I can still do some work with the editor?
Edit:
Oh, and thanks to Endserenading for the guest pass that saved me before my SEA copy got pushed into the shelves.
And one more thing, I had a better experience playing in the NA server than in SEA. This server has some lag built into it maybe.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
I think you can play offline as long as you log-in first. If you then lose the connection, it will still work (without archivements, i think). A 56k modem could probe useful here.
It's sad, but no internet = no game, at least if you're a legitimate user :(

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Oh, man. I hope they make a fix for this.
I swear, they said sometime ago that we can carry our SC and play offline without an internet connection.
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Yes, now that you mentioned it, i think you're right. They said that you only need to authenticate once, then could play SP offline. Did you authenticated the game at least once before the internet went down (even if you closed and opened the game after that)?
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
That's the thing. I can play alright when I got connection, but if I disable or unplug the DSL, it says, you need to authenticate. The editor wont run and say I need to login.
So, I thought there was some module that automatically gets downloaded or something which makes our copy an "authenticated" one -- which, from what they said before, should be playable offline.
I mean, how do we do that? Authenticate, that is.
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
That should be automatic when you log-in the first time, then your game is authenticated, and you should be able to play SP offline. They said it a looong time ago, however, and i didn't checked if it was really implemented.
You should post a thread in the Blizzard SC2 support forums about this. They said it was going to work. Either you have a problem with your installation, or they never implemented what they said.
I will check what happends if i "cut the wire" when i get home.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Yeah you should contact blizzard directly. Make a thread in the support forum, and maybe in the general forums so it makes some noise if blizzard was just trying to be sneaky with this... (which would be quite pathetic, I hope it's just a bug).
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
I've read some guys in the forums having the same problems. Blizzard responds with a sorry, you can't play without internet.
I raged.
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Are you serious? You have to have the internet to play at all?
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
That's what it said in the forums.
There's something really wrong with all this. I am utterly, and I say again, utterly dismayed.
I mean, sure, there might only be a couple there who would need to use the editor or test stuff without having a constant connection, but for crying out loud, it didn't stop people from doing what this is supposed to stop.
This is evil incarnate.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
I read the forum I think you were talking about, and somewhere the blue said something about them doing the online only thing to prevent "Piracy"...
EDIT: Im probably just going to stay out of the SC2 Technical support forums, they're much more depressing than WoW's...
EDIT2: Here are a few blue posts...
"You need to log on at least once on your Battle.net account on that computer on a working connection before Offline Mode can be enabled. It only works for 30 days before you need to reauthorize it."
Okay cool, I can do that, sucks for military and people without internet connections.
"The game does require a broadband internet connection. Offline mode is there if you happen to get disconnected or need to go out for a bit and not being connected to anything."
-.-

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
I'd rather know what's up though. I hope blizzard will turn from this path, even for just the editor and map testing.
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Them just dropping the whole "You need to log on at least once on your Battle.net account on that computer on a working connection before Offline Mode can be enabled. It only works for 30 days before you need to reauthorize it." would be pretty nice too.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
We should start a riot. That seems to be the only way blizzard ever goes back on some of their idiotic decisions.

I'm ready to cook some goose.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Throw us a link to the discussion. I probably won't be able to login in that forum, because it's from another region, but if i can, i will say something about it.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
I tested in in my house, and it worked offline.
This is what i did: with the cable disconnected, i tried to log-on.
It failed with "BN down, or no connection available". I accepted that.
Then another box appeared with only mi mail address and a connect button, then it failed again and the error box had the "offline" button, which showed the attached screen and worked. There's also a "play as guest" button in the login screen, maybe that works.
I have the SC2-WingsOfLiberty-enUS-Installer version.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Is is possible to play off-line single player mode while connected to the internet, or do you have to be disconnected just to have the option?
I was hoping to be able to play off-line by default.
Any info on this is appreciated--thanks!

That's what I did, and tried it again now, but still it tells me to login to battle.net to authenticate my client.
That is up to the point when you click the play offline.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
I can play offline without net, last night my connection was out when I got home. So the same screen appeared (no connection or b.net is down) . I just accepted it then I went to the main screen. I even picked to log in as guest.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
That's strange.
edit: Some questions:
1. Did you play as guest before the disconnect, or logging off?
2. How long did you stay as guest with internet connection?
3. Do you happen to have an AV? I'm guessing this might be preventing something, but don't want to do the whole uninstall AV, install again after.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
1. Did you play as guest before the disconnect, or logging off?
I played as guest even without the internet connection to begin. Thou I have already logged in the night before I have no Internet connection.
2. How long did you stay as guest with internet connection?
I played almost 2-3 hours. I first played the campaign then some skirmish vs A.I.
3. Do you happen to have an AV? I'm guessing this might be preventing something, but don't want to do the whole uninstall AV, install again after.
I have an AV but SC2 is already set as part of the Ignore list.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
This is really strange.
My guess:
Because I had used an enUS client as guest before uninstall and installing sc2 sea.
-
Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Yeah, probably your PC was authenticated for a enUS client not for a SEA one.

I think that's a good guess. Could you play with the SEA version? Offline mode was available after playing online at least once?

Edit: Good news, I has offline mode.
What happened was that before migraine struck hard to make my day a living hell, I used CC cleaner. Tried SC2, same orange box appears. So, shut down computer is a definite, "Yes!"
Now, some hours later, after booting up, my ISP decided to go kaput again. So, tried the editor. It worked. Tried SC2 offline, it worked!
I have no idea if which of these were the causes of the fix:
1. Santa Clause decided it wasn't funny anymore, and fixed while I was dreaming of fire and being in a cavern.
2. My account needed some time off.
3. Registry conflicts or the likes of the previous installation caused the problem.
It would be nice to know what exactly led up to this issue, so we'd know how to avoid such a thing, and find a solution when it happens.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
found a fix for this. you have to log on to both a bnet account and start a campaign game, and a guest account and start a campaign game, while connected to the net. once you've done both of these you can use your bnet account in offline mode or a guest account in offline mode, if you don't do both neither will work.

Re: Authenticating Starcraft 2: WoL
Okay, after running the repair tool, it said I have the enUS, which I don't, and that some files don't exist.
It's very likely this is causing the problem.
Edit: Apparently the above is not the problem, neither does the above fix the problem. I'm getting worried and utterly dismayed at this since I might spend a some hours away from this desk later.
I can't believe this is happening to me, when I'm one to need it most.
