Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
Don't get me wrong, this game still looks great.
But for example, when Raynor shoots some marines, it's just a bunch of sparks. It still looks cool.
But I don't know, I think I'll miss the "eye exploding claw through the face from the back of the skull" scene from The Amerigo in SC1. It was definitely a lot darker, while still being able to keep the atmosphere and plot in its cinematics.
BTW not saying that an M will guarantee more gore and such, but just hypothetically speaking.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
the T rating of today is the M rating of 10 years ago. And why would bullets hitting a marine suit cause anything other than sparks? It's not like blood would erupt out of wounds with enough force to squirt out of the little holes in the suit.
Also there are plenty of units exploding into blood in the actual gameplay. Not to mention Zeratul shoving his psi-blade down a Hyrdas mouth and stabbing it through the head with it's own claw.

I agree. Although I wouldn't mind an M rating, T is just fine for me. As long as the game is good, it could be E for all I care :D.

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
Wasn't the original StarCraft rated Teen as well? I know one box-art showed it as Mature, but the recent ones are Teen, unless I'm mistaken.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
M rating = something like God of War or Devil May Cry
T rating = everything else.
basically...if there's no sex and the brutal scenes aren't super brutal it'll be T
super brutal is now defined as ripping off heads, chopping off limbs, banging the goddess of love, disembowling Kronos, and smashing Zeus' face until the screen is completely red.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
I find the game offensive as teen. I demand sex and super brutal scenes.

Yup, the version I had was rated T. My brother had a version that was rated M, so I'm not sure if they changed it or if it was just a typo.

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
A lot more goes into it then just porn and gore. Certain language and dialogue used in the story can have a pretty good effect on the rating, all because of one little f bomb. Star Craft is the type of universe that needs an M rating, they can do it with a T but it will never be as good. Blizzard really needs to make a nice mature game-to bad they wont. God damn. The one company that could really have fun with a Mature title. UGH! I hate that they are all about money.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
Given the higher degree of detail, I think an exploding face with today's graphics would be stretching it. And ratings have changed over the years, becoming more liberal. I'm more or less fine with how things are now.

Vacuum of space. Holes would cause the pressure within the suit to collapse in on itself, resulting in a huge bloody mess.
This besides the obvious fact that bloody explosions are the most visually impacting way to communicate death.

Rare is the game that actually needs an M-rating to properly communicate with the user. And if what we've seen of SC2 doesn't merit an M rating, based on whatever voodoo that the ESRB uses, then SC2 doesn't need one to properly communicate with the user.

Really? What about the StarCraft universe requires whatever the ESRB determines merits an M rating?
Quote:

Right. That's why Stephen Spielberg put all of those bloody explosions in Saving Private Ryan, rather than, you know, realistic death.
No, the most visually impacting way to communicate death is to show death as it would happen.

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
The original got a T, so whats the problem?
I think saying "I want an M rating" is a bit misguided in the sense that you think Blizzard consciously made the decision that they'll tone down or up a few things to make it happen - which may happen for Korea cuz it got the adult rating. That is up to the ESRB (or whatever you region rater is). Blizzard simply made the game the way they wanted, the ESRB looks at it, and gives it the rating.
The point I'm trying to make is the "M" rating doesn't mean dick when it comes to the maturity level of a game (I think it's a flaw in the ESRB itself). Look at Halo, then look at some other games in the "M" category. Halo is a PUSSY when it comes to the violence and other themes. Yet SC2 is probably way more ballsy, and still got the T rating despite the ability to decapitate marines, make alcoholic references, and the overall dark and depressing atmosphere. It's right up there with Mass Effect - and yet its not an M.
Now another thing you need to look at isn't the T, but the reasons for it -
Quote:
- Blood and Gore
- Language
- Suggestive Themes
- Use of Alcohol or Tobacco
- Violence
I think all the ESRB did was look at the original and gave it the same rating. It's like giving Return to Oz a G.
Granted this could help sales, but could hurt Blizzard politically if you know what I mean.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
The difference between 'M' and 'T' isn't that much anymore. It used to be that 'M' games had a lot more violence but that's not so true anymore. Now, 'M' games usually just have more language or sex in the them.
I still believe in the Raynor x Kerrigan sex scene though. I must hold out hope!

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
It's rated M15+ in Australia which means it is recommended for persons aged 15 or older but anyone could purchase it. MA15+ is restricted to persons 15 or older, R18+ is restricted to adults 18 or older and X is for adults 18 or older and generally reserved for hardcore porn. RC is refused classification and generally consists of illegal material.
You can take that to the bank.
I think the original here was rated M15+ too, and by todays much lowered standards it would probably be PG13+ (parental guidance recommended). I'm indifferent to what a movie or game is rated, as long as it achieves its goal. StarCraft 2 with Jim Raynor addicted to doing good deeds and that scallywag Kerrigan interfering with his life rated G (E) wouldn't work. But he's got his alcohol problem, Zerg swarms, pissed off Protoss and a Terran dictator after him and there's plenty of bloodshed along the way. I think M15+ (T) is fine.

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
Well I voted T and not ashamed...
Two reasons...
1. E-sports
If we all want SC II to help truly build e-sports in the West, then we(Blizz and the community) have to get the younger generation involved now. If you think back...a lot of us were(myself included) teens when we started playing SCI.
Now I know that means we will have a bunch of little whiny 12 year old noobs talking trash on bnet for awhile. It's ok though. They will grow out of it.
A lot of us don't take the ratings system seriously, but there are a lot of parents out there who do. I don't want an entire crop of players to miss out. We want SCII to catch on like WoW has. And god willing...surpass it.
2. Money
It's kind of like most movies these days. Back when we were kids a series like LOTR would never have gotten a PG-13 rating. No way would Blizz ever allow an SC game to release with an M rating. Just wouldn't happen. They want as many eyeballs on this game as they can get.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
In North America, I don't know why they bother with ratings above T. Do you know what my favorite video game was when I was 10? Conker's bad fur day. My parents never gave a shit about ratings and I never felt the need to go out n do anything that would get me put in jail (other then drugs, but what I do to myself is frankly none of the government's fucking business).
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
B-B-B-B-But, I want Jim Raynor to be snorting cocaine whilst banging big booty chicks, cursing like a sailor, and shotgun blasting heads off! Oh yeah, and plenty of harsh humor and offensive comments.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
shooting a marine and going red and shooting a marine and going a lot of red, is not determinant to the rating.
They judge it mostly by use of violence, no matter how much blood sprays from a zergling, use of drugs, alcohol, smokes, suggestive language or scenes, explicit content.
So the special effects have nothing to do with the rating and I don't mind in being T, M, E or whatever!
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
The amount of blood (and realism of it) definitely has an effect on rating. At least in America.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
Given that Mass Effect 2 was rated M, and had a nice variety of ethical choices proposed to the player. (Yes I know Mass Effect has Sex Scenes but I just like the options given to you as renenagade shepard )
It's almost a given that there's virtually little to no room in the "choices" you make as Raynor, or they are boring tactical choices such as "Merc A over Merc B".
<yawn> The Single player will probably play out like another typical streamlined single player game. Which is fine...because that's what Blizzard games are known for...but given that it is a T rating...it will be quite tame.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
All it means is that you have no choices like "save the burning church or rape the school girls". The rating is no indication of the linearity of the campaign.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
I'm fine with the T rating. But the story might've gotten a lot darker if it was given an M rating (I like dark).

Very true, but in the same game, with same graphics it doesn't matter if it comes out little red or tons of red.
If a game is more realistic, like say when Far Cry 2 came out and had huge blood leaks it would have made a difference.
Also note that that is still not much influential. Its way more influential if they have use of drugs or sex scenes, that the amount of special effects.
In simple terms I'm trying to say this: the amount of red is not determinant, but rather the quality of the red. If its totally real-life like looking it can influence the rating.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
Blizz is appealing to the masses...and the masses are predominantly teens to 20 somethings.
And honestly..I'm not sure I want Starcraft to get really, really dark. I want it to pick me up like the first game did and carry me on an epic ride. I think it can do that really well within the parameters of the T rating...which is arguably very similar to a PG-13 movie rating. I don't need excessive violence, profanity and naked women to keep me invested in an SC game...just a touch. :)
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
the singleplayers options revolve around the gameplay, not the story. Which is i find far more interesting. However, the 'gameplay' choice do effect the story somewhat apparently
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
I really could care less about the rating, as long as the game's good. These ratings are stupid anyway.
Add a naked boob, and the game won't be allowed to be sold to anyone under 41 over in the US, while it would get a "6 and upwards" rating here in Europe, and nobody would care :p.
Same thing with blood and gore, only the other way round. It's really just a cultural thing.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
I'm ok with the rating. As long as the game lives up to the hype and Blizz continues its excellence in storytelling, I'm cool with a little less gore than I would like.
-
Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
I can't be disappointed when that's 100% what I expected.
Broader audience, more sales etc... which is a great thing for me since I want to see the esports scene flourish, and even 12y/o kids will contribute to that.
Besides, I don't really care what sparks out, I'm in for the gameplay.
ps: you seem to have merged "annoying" and "anyone" in your title :/

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
Whats your obsession with M? Playing M games makes you feel more mature?
THe game is awesome and its T. Sure it has violence and all stuff that would make it candidate for M but not enough. I seriously need to know if there is an obsession for M games couz in my school everyone is just buying M games for the sake of it and most of them are a shame (Not all, but some are just stupid blood spam).
So we are going to buy games judging by the cover (or rather their rating)? Or by its content?

No, that's the most emotional impacting.
You won't read a death animation from a unit the size of your pinky nail if it just keeled over. Left 4 Dead has this problem, where Zombies would sometimes die 'realistically' instead of some overglorified death, and you don't know whether you should be unloading more shots into the body or simply wait until the body hits the floor in a slump.
Seeing units 'pop' is quickly identifiable and stands out to regular animations that wouldn't normally indicate death.

They're not in a vacuum... My guess is it's one of the battlecruisers above Char, Tychus and Raynor go on-board to find Valerion, who, you'll notice has no need for a marine helmet for oxygen.

What are you even talking about? My statement was a direct response to why marines burst into a bloody mess when they get shot.

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
I am shocked that this vote is so split. I personally accept that it is a teen rated game and I am aware that a lot of these games so how end up in a 7 years-old's computer from there siblings and sometimes their parents. So let me ask you do we really need to poison more kids minds with these games? I personally hope for them to release an unrated version of the game one that people like myself can enjoy (but allow it to be secret) all the special CGIs and hopefully a Raynor & Kerrigan sex scene.......

Re: Is anyoing else a little disappointed by the T rating?
I don't mind the T rating but I hope that there is more than a small amount of blood in the cutscenes/cinematics. I always thought that the starcraft universe was rather dark in some ways and it would look kind of weird if zerglings died without bleeding or marines getting sliced and there was no blood.

Bullshit. FFVII revolutionized video gaming (to the extent that it did. Which it didn't) with its content and presentation, not its rating.
I hate ratings, for pretty much everything: games, movies, TV, whatever. But the thing I hate more than rating systems is ratings whoring: the notion that you instantly know the content of something based on its rating. That R-rated movies are better than PG-13 ones. That an M-rated game automatically has more whatever than a T-rated game. And so on.
Quote:

The original statement was talking about a specific cutscene where Raynor's shooting a Marine, not general violence against Marines.
