New novel: Devils' Due
Christie Golden is writing a new StarCraft novel: StarCraft II: Devils' Due.
Quote:
In this tie-in to StarCraft II, bestselling author Christie Golden reveals the exploits that shaped the game’s heroes, Tychus Findlay and Jim Raynor.
So, we can expect Raynor and Findlay's criminal duo days to be covered in this novel; at least, that's what I'm expecting.

Re: New novel: Devils' Due
I love Christie Golden's SC books - should be good.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Aww man its not out till 2011 tho.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Still very excited lol.
I own every single starcraft book that has come out except the SC1 manual :D
*Adds this one to collection* :D

5 new copies of SC and I still haven't found a SC manual either. :P
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
You need to take the manual off the CD. Shouldn't there be a site (not Replacement Docs) that has the manual PDF somewhere?
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
I have many copies of the manual and I love each.
On topic: I'm all over this book. Too bad it is a ways off though :/

Re: New novel: Devils' Due
The timing also makes me wonder; is Spectres going to be delayed again, or more likely, will this book be delayed?
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Sweet, new squeal to Devils!
So, that Camp McIntyre no longer Canon with Jim, Tychus weren't sent to pay for their insubordination and gone AWOL post-Korsy.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Nope. Although they both did spend time in prison for insubordination. Just not the same time :)
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Glad their gonna keep this Raynor story line going...I'd like them to maybe do a total of three novels and have the last one lead right up and maybe just a little ways into the SCI story line. Really tie everything together.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Man this is going to be awesome. I'm hoping for some throw back to the old Devil members. Hell Kid is still alive anyways. I'd like to see a little side bit on him. Book is so far away though, hard to get excited about it.

Re: New novel: Devils' Due
This was the premise of my story for the short story contest. (The first one) =D
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
i don't know why i bought all three DT books....but they were bad. none of the characters especially jake ramsey really interested me...i mostly flipped through the pages hoping i'd see the interesting characters like valerian or mengsk show up
best starcraft books were
Speed of Darkness: Tracy hickman
Mengsk, I: Graham McNeill
Heaven's Devils: William C. Dietz
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
...
Are you serious? The three DT books were the best ever depiction of Protoss History ever written. Props to Christie Golden for writing such an emotionally charged series.
Lol! I cried when Zamara was about to be placed in eternal struggle with Ulrezaj! The connection to each character was created so beautifully that in the end you could feel every emotion felt by the characters.
I don't know how you can say this series was bad, unless you don't value emotional attachment in characters, and don't want to bring yourself to understand what is there.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Speed of Darkness on the other hand, I don't see how anyone can like that book. It was just pages & pages of a Marine losing his mind + boring battles. Nothing remotely noteworthy happened in that book. :$

Let's be realistic here. Creating 'emotional attachment' isn't that difficult, especially if you've had 3 books to do it. The DT saga is filled with generic, borderline Mary Sue characters (Jake, R.M., I'm looking at you), predictable plot points, missed opportunities (meet Ethan Stewart, the lamest infested Terran ever to have lived -- and that list includes Stukov), and generally "O.K." writing.
The only redeeming thing about it is the way it sheds light on Protoss culture through Zamara's flashbacks. It's a very convenient way to learn about a lot of the mysteries surrounding the race that would have been difficult to address on an individual basis. She did OK by Valerian, but that came at the high price of making Mengsk look even less magnificent than Brood War suggested, so I can't give her too much credit.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Let's be realistic here.
It was way better written (even from the first book alone) than Speed of Darkness.

Wouldn't know, haven't read it.
From the sound of it, I imagine that as far as actual literature goes, Speed of Darkness wins out, and as far as SC literature goes, DT Saga wins out.

Well I, Mengsk or Heavens Devils both beat Speed of Darkness in terms of actual literature. <_<

Very possible. In case of I, Mengsk, even probable!
Saw Heaven's Devils at Chapters a few days ago. Didn't pick it up because I'm a little strapped for funds at the moment, but seeing as how Raynor & Tyke's adventures seem to be only beginning, I just might have to. :)

im going to dispute this too...what speed of darkness wanted to do, it did very well...put you in the shoes of a marine fighting in a war he knows so little about and in the end with all the evil that is was emanated through the zerg and the corrupt humans, they died doing something noble and worthy. it wasn't a great book in terms of adding to starcraft lore or exploring a very large part of it, but it was a book that you could read without ever playing or knowing what starcraft the game was...it was a story you can read and if you liked it enough go on to explore the rest of the universe.
the DT books were just a chore to read. everything from the dull human characters like ramsey and rosemary to the pompous ass protoss. the protoss were pretty way too over the top with the whole "to learn is to unlearn" way of talking...

DT saga in 3 whole books couldn't even come close to the combat depicted in speed of darkness. the combat and battles were all too detached from the characters and out of focus in DT saga.
in conclusion, i gave 3 chances for christie golden to win me over and I actually read and bought the books just because they were starcraft. none of the DT books even came close to how much i enjoyed heaven's devils, I, mengsk or speed of darkness

Re: New novel: Devils' Due
I guess to each his/her own. I won't dispute your opinion, man.
I enjoyed the series as thoroughly as I enjoyed Heaven's Devils, whose emotional content was very strong too. Esp the ending was quite heart-wrenching. DT saga was a lot closer to my affinity for Protoss lore, and understanding of a race that is truly depicted as very 'alien' to human sensibility. Christie captured that aspect well on top of creating a sort of cliché love story between RM and Jake.
I'm surprised that you did not capture the fact that the character of Jake and RM are meant to be dull, given their background. But, Christie Golden explores how in all that dullness and un-excitable personality, she was able to "tear open" a rift into an alien mind's sensibility that is at the beginning conspicuously absent.
Anyways, as I said. To each his own, and we agree to disagree that the books were good/bad, based on our personal perspectives. GL with WoL.

ya for sure..
lol
i've recently come to like the protoss a lot less over the years..before when they had one liners like "my life for aiur" and "ishazu"
they were real badasses...in a lot of the cinematics like the tassadar one and the one when zeratul and artanis put the crystal into the temple, they just seemed like the super intimidating silent type.
then after reading books about them, i learned that they pretty much behave and talk like mr. miyagi...as in "you must wait young grasshopper" lol i guess its because i pictured them more as the predators from the predator movies who from the perspective of the humans were these mysterious and enigmatic silent yet terrifying warriors.
they seem a lot cooler in the games than in the books.

Eh. If there's any race that's gotten more lame as the years went by it's the Terrans. Wait until you play WoL, I heard that the Terrans come off as utter rednecks. Before they were just lowly scum who always got horribly murdered in cinematics and said inane lines like "I love you sarge" and "got yer zerg right here", which at least made me laugh. Now they're becoming more and more like hicks, and the ones who aren't, like Valerian, are aristocratic pricks with lameass British voices. Seriously, I get the impression that Mengsk & Valerian do nothing but sip tea & eat crumpets all day. :4

Sweet! I can't get enough of StarCraft book. Especially Christie Golden. The Dark Templar Saga is amazing.

the terrans actually got cooler over the years.
"your in way over your head jim"
"sweeeeet mother mercy"
"STAND YOUR GROUND"
those lines right there are better than anything the protoss have ever said in christie golden's books
and valerian doesn't have a british accent. notice the way he says Offer instead of Owffa lol
the protoss say "for artanis" AKA the pre pubescent protoss who just doesn't belong AKA the most worthless hero in the most worthless unit in the game AKA who blizzard made a mistake replacing tassadar with....
the protoss died with tassadar and fenix
sadly the protoss just don't live up to badassery like this anymore
watch?v=QWOtx66a-tI
nor do they look as cool as this anymore
http://www.creepcolony.com/fenix.gif
nor do they sound as intimidating as this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWOtx66a-tI
all races took somewhat of a hit in terms of baddassery....the terrans somewhat redeemed themselves with Tychus and the new ghosts.
the protoss core trait of warriors charging into battle knowing that they may never enjoy the khala again and be killed with their memories gone forever still charged into battle fearlessly...RET CONNED they were teleporting away the entire time...

Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Quote:
RET CONNED they were teleporting away the entire time...
... See, I know it's just a game. But I have this thing where I get a little peeved whenever people call warriors or soldiers cowards.
A soldier who believes whole heartedly in their sacred cause and plunges head first into the jaws of hell is a being to be feared and admired. Just because there is a slight change he can make it out isn't cause for jeering - it's cause for you to keep an eye over your shoulder. There's only a *chance* that they survive. Moreover, notice that they let out a scream of fury as they are pulled from the heat of battle.
Finally, to die for the sake of honor or glory... is selfish and stupid. To live for a cause, displacing your own honor for the sake of your entire species, is a far better way to serve. To die on the battlefield when you've done all you can, and when you can do ever greater works else where... yeah, there's no dishonor in that.
... /rant
As opposed to Gradius, I think I'm gaining a little moe respect for Terrans these days. And please don't insult us southerners - we make fun of ourselves enough for everyone, thank you very much. :p
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
I have nothing against southerners, of course. However, from the sounds of it, the campaign is featuring a lot of redneck styled dialogue (I hope this isn't true, because most units seem ok to me so far basing my judgments off all the Multi playable Terran units). Anyway, sure Terrans can be seen as rednecks with big guns, but their whole race isn't just a bunch of rednecks, and I certainly don't want them talking like rednecks. I want more of the Marine talk in SC1. The way Ghosts talk, Goliaths, Wraiths. They don't sound like rednecks at all, and they're by far the coolest and most memorable units.
That compared to the idiot on the tower that got owned by a Dragoon shot.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Ghosts had a slight southern drawl, and wraiths were caricatures of airplane pilots. All the units were jokes. And that's an inescapable fact, I think. I have more "respect" for SC2 units than I do from the original.
But I agree. There should be more diversity in the characters. We need more Toshes, Horners, Warfields, Durans. Even if they're caricatures too, we need 'em. And there are more races than just blacks and whites. srsly
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
I didn't notice any southern drawl at all. And whether the Wraith was a reference or joke, it doesn't matter, he had personality. Rednecks can have personality too but they're just crude and unappealing.
And having a southern drawl/voice/accent doesn't mean you're a redneck, they're totally different. Would you say Mengsk is a redneck? No, and he definitely has a southern accent.
And I don't think rednecks need to have a southern voice either. In fact, I don't see much of a relation between the two except for a generalization. There are lots of rednecks in Alberta too. I always imagine rednecks to be these guys who just love screaming their own local slang while being gun lovers, riding on a lawn mower modified into a motorbike. Having bad hygiene, and being inbred.
Of course that's also just a big generalization too. The vulture in SC1 can probably be considered a redneck but I think he's cool. The original voice actor for the Thor, was not cool. He just kept screaming in over exaggerated tones and stuff.

Y'know, I was with you on the whole "something about the Protoss isn't quite as epic as it used to be" bandwagon right up to this point. But then you conflated Tassadar with Fenix, and I just can't allow that.
See, I don't like Fenix -- never did. I think he's a loud, obnoxious one-note cliche who goes on and on and on and on about mystical Protoss voodoo. "The Khala this" and "honor that." Yes, I realize that the Khala does actually exist, and does represent a part of Protoss culture... but at the same time, when's the last time Tassadar talked about it?
Tassadar was "bad-ass" because when he returned to Aiur to aid the Protoss and was confronted with Aldaris's bickering, he just flat out interrupted Aldaris. "Silence!" That single word, uttered with such force that both Aldaris and Fenix could do nothing but listen, to me exemplified the might of the Protoss. Not talking about being fearless, but being fearless, as Tassadar was in that instant.
One of my favorite quotes from the original game (not just mine, probably) comes from Zeratul. "You speak of knowledge, Judicator? You speak of experience? I have journeyed through the darkness between the most distant stars. I have beheld the births of negative-suns and borne witness to the entropy of entire realities... Unto my experience, Aldaris, all that you've built here on Aiur is but a fleeting dream. A dream from which your precious Conclave shall awaken, finding themselves drowned in a greater nightmare."
Compare & contrast with, "The Cycle nears its end. The artifacts are the key [...] to the end of all things." How powerful can Zeratul really sound when he's talking about vague, mystical mumbo-jumbo?
I'm gonna give Blizz some time here, I've heard like two quotes from Zeratul so far, so there's a good chance they just caught him at a bad time. ;) But I know this much -- Christie Golden didn't come close to capturing the essence of that awesome, frightening power that was hinted at in the original games. For all the alien culture she fleshed out for the Protoss, she made them seem mundane, and I'm worried that that characterization might carry over into the games.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
If there's anything in here I agree with it's that lots of races took some hits to their badassery in SC2.
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
Zeratul is the new Medivh. But Kerrigan rivals his vague and mystical blabla...
-
Re: New novel: Devils' Due
I've never liked prophecies. If it turns out that Zeratul fabricated this whole prophecy thing to manipulate everyone, I'd laugh my ass off.
I can't say I've liked Zeratul's dialog up to this point, but then I remember that we've heard two lines from him, as noted by Gradius. All very cryptic stuff, which is only bad when it isn't thought provoking or contains hints at something else... which it didn't, and therefor sucked. Zeratul is making for a poor enigmatic and mystical figure. But I'm judging before I've seen him do anything.
It still cannot be denied that Zeratul retains a level of badassery; he's, what, the equivalent of a sixy year old pwning hydralisks with their own scythes. That demands respect. So if he continues doing that, and injects a little more meaning into his crptyicisms, then I'm happy.

But, yeah, Tassadar was/is still the bad-ass Protoss and he definitely is my favourite Protoss of all-time, with Zeratul coming in second. Although the Dark Templar Saga almost completely ruined the image I had of Zeratul - you know, the whole moping about scene. Thankfully, the intro of him killing hydralisks restored some of it... but not quite enough.
