Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
So, I have been thinking about buying the CE. What do y'all think? Is it worth it? I don't care about the WoW pet, and I own SC so I don't need the anthology. Really it's the artwork and behind the scenes, but with all this artwork being released, I fear a book full of things I've seen already. Any opinions?
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
I was thinking the same thing, so I decided to just go ahead and preorder the damn thing before my cheapness takes the better of me.
;p
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
I actually went to gamestop and asked if I can pre-order the CE and they said no, it was a limited thing. Strange. But if you can still get it and you already have SC 1 and don't have the need for a wow pet, I really don't think the soundtrack and flash drive are worth 40 bones.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
It said there was a backorder at Gamestop.ca. I'd rather the game on time than the CE later on, so I just reserved the normal game at EB.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Personally, I'm not buying it. The only interesting item is the art book, and even that doesn't excite me that much. (Like you, I'm leery of the idea of buying in for a hard copy of artwork which has been floating around on the internet for ages.) For an example of a real collector's edition, see Halo: Reach.

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Only you can answer if it's worth it or not.
To me it's not.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Yeah Jesus, alright, online purchase for me then.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
It's definitely worth it. Even if you don't want the content itself, it'll fetch a pretty penny once they become rare. For proof of this all one needs to do is look at StarCraft, Diablo, or World Of WarCraft Collector's Editions. All of which go for between 500$-1000$ for brand new, sealed last I checked. StarCraft is a bit more with as much as 5000$ but that might've been a signed copy that I saw.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Only if it had an extended manual....
Since the SC2 manual is all recap with no new information. =/

This doesn't really answer the OP's question. Even if Scar is interested in getting a hold of a CE to sell later (and this seems like a dubious idea to me), he still has to figure out which edition of the game to buy for himself. And that just takes you back to the evaluations which everyone else is discussing here.

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Thank you, Captain Obvious. The world is a better place now.

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
the standard game is 60 bucks, for 40 more you get a frikkin 2GB USB stick one of a kind, art book, comic book, full soundtrack, and various collectibles, and a DVD.
...that probably 100 bucks worth of stuff right there that you get for 40. If you dont really want the stuff pay 40 and sell them off individually. Hell that DVD will prolly sell for 20-40 bucks alone on ebay. Soundtrack? Eh 10-20, Art book? 50+ at the least. It's one of those things that you dont really use a lot but you keep because it's a COLLECTABLE.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
I can get a 10GB USB for $20, get the art on-line or wait a week while people scan the damn thing, listen to the soundtrack on Youtube and rip it with Zamzar, and the DVD? I'll wait for the content to be posted online or go into the game data to extract whatever the DVD has.
Not worth it. It takes a little but, but it's cheaper to get all those things by not buying the CE.
Just give me the loading disks and I'm happy.

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
I just ordered my third or fourth copy... I can't recall which?
And yeah the manual is super lame :/

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Oh, well, today paper manuals are usually a single page that says "go to this address: www.starcraft2.com"
Does it at least have a better pdf manual, or it's supposed to be seen online?
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Yeah, the CE is slightly disappointing if you wanted something that would truly add to the gameplay experience. The dog chain USB drive and extra disks were the most attractive to me, but I really got it because it's SC2 and I want to make it the best experience possible (fanboy).
Now money wise you are getting what it's worth, but for me the issue is I'm not REALLY a collector, so a lot of the extra stuff I might get bored with very soon - I can't even really use the WOW pet or SC1 key, unless I can sell em and get some money back. I got it just for the sake of having it, as most people who get collector's editions do.

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
You dont seem to understand Khas
these are collectables, if you didnt get one already the only way you can get this stuff is by buying it online. There are collector's out there and they are the ones who pay top dollar for this stuff.
Personally, ill go through the DVD once, art book once or twice but then ill close it all up and shelve it and remember everything fondly. In a few years ill go through it all again and have a smile on my face.
PS: THose will collector editions - you can always downgrade to a standard edition :)

No, I do understand. And I just don't like collectibles. They tap into this strange need people have to... to collect! And I've just never had this urge. Once I have something, I use it, then let go of it. I don't need something for posterity's sake. I'm just not that materialistic.

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
LOA has the manual? He must have access to the game!
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
It's up to you if you think it's worth it. You could probably buy the CE and resell the extra stuff with it for a profit.

Exactly. The CE is only worth what you really like what it comes with. For me it is cuz I listen to soundtracks, like having the artwork in a book, and everything that it comes with. But I'm not getting the CE so :(.

This is definitely a fanboy talking here. The artbook you can probably just buy off someone. The DVDs you can rapidshare. Plus I've collected all of Blizzard's high res art,I can print you an artbook right now.
I'm just buying the DVD 'cause it's easier going to the store for 30 minutes over downloading a 12gb file from a slow server for 8 hours.

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Thankfully I ordered both a Collectors edition and a regular copy.
I think I might just sell my Collectors Edition...I was disappointed when that Russian dude flipped open the artbook...it's all the same shit we've all seen.
But I just might buy it for the sake of it being SC2. I hate collectors editions...but if I'm a big fan...I'll shell out the extra $$ for the random crap..(better be good random crap too...Like my Vault-Tech Fall out Lunch Box :)

I have the manual too.
Trust me its really bad. But it has this sexy picture of Kerrigan.

The Artbook costs 30$-40$. You will not fine one on Ebay for less then 25$, if that, and only closely after release.

I have nothing really personally against piracy, but with this line of logic, why buy starcraft 2 at all? You could just pirate it!

If you're planning on making a profit, don't take the key and sell the rest. Thats going to diminish its value to the point where your looking at maybe a 20$ gain after a couple years. Don't open it and just buy another copy/

It's not being a fanboy to give a company that deserves money... money.
Either say that the DVDs don't warrant the money, or say that the CE is worth it, but don't weasel your way out of it by pretending that piracy is actually the societal norm.
And that's coming from a veteran interweb corsair. I'm not the morality police. I just have a lick of common sense and responsibility.
For me the CE is worth it. Between the art book, the soundtrack, and the DVDs, I'm gonna be a happy camper. Someone else might not dig it, but that's their business. :)

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
I will definitely buy one for the sake of memory and rewarding myself for having once loved this game and waited for it.
It's the little wonders, Rob Thomas wrote.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
I always get CEs for games I know I'll be playing a lot - and for all Blizz games, because of the art book. I have so many art books it's ridiculous. And just for the record, I bought the art book from the Burning Crusade - it alone was worth $20 on ebay, and often for more than that.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Yes, you can eventually get all the stuff contained in the CE by just waiting for people to upload the content... but for some of us, that isn't enough. :P
I suppose it just depends on what kind of person you are. Since im an artist who wants to eventually work at blizzard, I tend to keep the artbooks handy for inspiration. Also I'm crazy about the behind the scenes content on the dvds since there is rarely a youtube version that looks or sounds as good.
Also for me... Being someone who does computer graphics for a living I tend to want to support the other artists out there so I'd rather pay up for the content than get it off the net somewhere.
Ultimately it just comes down to... how bad do YOU want it? If you have to ask if the collector's edition is worth it. It probably isn't to you unless u just don't know what is inside of it.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Hey, I'm buying the collectors edition as long as best buy doesn't get confused and I don't get confused!
What is this manual you talk about TychusFindlay?
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
who reads manuals these days?
btw my point earlier, if you read everything, was that everything is a COLLECTABLE which appeals to COLLECTORS, and those who wish to give more support to blizzard.
up to you, for 40 bucks its pretty good
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
It depends what comes in the collectors edition. If it's actual stuff then I consider it. Like statues and what not. I love that stuff, but no games ever have quality castings. That halo reach is a nice one, but it's halo and halo sucks.
Getting codes to unlock stuff in games, etc.. that is all crap.
Art books with lots of exclusive art is good, but I hate buying them to see it's a bunch of reprinted art.

I still read the original SC manual from time to time. It's my favorite manual of all time. The back story is so good to me it's like reading a novel :D

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
probably not, get the game for $60 and be happy.
You can extract the music from the game, the artbook has images that are already available on the internet, you can get a very good 8gb usb for 10 euros.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
If I had money I would have bought it no doubt. Why? The art book.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
The music in the game is in a lossy .ogg format which makes the music take a decent quality hit plus, IRRC, the soundtrack CD has some bonus tracks.
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
sry meant to put a smiley there, i still read manuals :D
since my uber uncle is the one buying this for me it's up to him whether or not i get CE or not :P
-
Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
It is your choice, the Collector's Edition or CE is more expensive and in limited numbers. The Standard is cheaper but contains the game and a manual. So it's up to you do you want everything or just to play the game?

+1 more who wants the artbook.
Yes it will undoubtedly contain a lot of artwork that I've seen before.
But since their artwork is so inspirational for me, I'd like to have it on hand, and without having to turn on my computer when I want to show it to someone on visit.
As one with a graphic designer background, I could print all highres artwork AND make a proper softcover binding - But it would likely cost more than the additional price of the collectors edition in printing ink alone. :D

Re: Collector's Edition - Is it worth it?
Does the CE not have a manual too? Doesn't really matter. I'm getting both.
