SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
Its just so odd that after 5 placement matches everyone ends up in different leagues. I just seem to notice that my low APM friends always end up in bronze leagues even with records like 4-1 or silver with 5-0 and high APM friends end up in platinum and gold with the same records.
It doesn't seem like the quality of opponents in placement matches really differs especially 1 day after beta when everyone has almost no games.
Does anyone know how they actually place you? It's definitely not based off of win/loss, as I think it should be.

I believe it is based off your win/loss compared with the win/loss of your opponants and their places in the leagues.
Since we are in the first few days of a ladder, the statistic based system is bond to be skewed.
APM has nothing directly linked with skill.
Re: SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
I doubt APM is linked to it, though the exact mechanics are a mystery to me. In the final phase 1 reset I won my first 5 placement matches and got ranked Diamond league. A friend also won all five and got ranked gold :S.
Re: SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
And I got ranked Silver for winning all 5, and I was #1 Silver for like a week! It didn't bump me up even though I was beating plat guys and a few low-mid diamonds >.> Before that I was #1 Gold and still did not get bumped up...
Re: SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
I wouldn't know because I don't have an account, but from what I've heard its based on your opponents level and what you choose your level to be.
And no, I'm not dustin browder himself obviously, but maybe carrying his name will make me look more knowledgeable :)

Re: SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
Its possible.. I personally think it has to do with Average Income spent or whatever that stat is. The one that says how much minerals you have on average.. If you are over 300-400, you are doing bad (unless its like a 1 hour game).. so it puts anyone under 300 into the higher leagues.. I think that is the very basics of being good at RTS games, always keeping your income low at all times, if your minerals often goes past 400, you are not playing good.
The thing that is odd to me, is how they are promoting people from Platinum to diamond.. I have a friend whos like 30-20 and got into diamond like when he was 15-10.. yet I had to get ~40 games before I was moved up, and a much better record too.. IdrA also was in my division, with a 19-0 record, still in platinum.. yet lots of people who were like 19-10 were in diamond already..
I personally went 4-1 with one disc, and was placed straight into Platinum.. ~30 games later, with a rec of 25-15.. im in Diamond now (last night I was #4 in my league)

That guy strikes me as a fun, careless, obsessive-compulsive dude, who loves too much sugar on anything. So, yeah...
Re: SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
I think average unspent ressources (which is also displayed at the end of matches in a graph) has an influence on where you get placed
Re: SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
Blizzard won't reveal their methods as it can then become exploitable.
If they're basing placement on only 2 matches though, I'd say they'd be taking into account as many variables as possible. Personally I never thought there was anything wrong with 5 placement matches, but it became tiresome doing it so often. That's beta for you, though.
Re: SC2 Ladder uses APM to place you?
I still had to play 5 games to get placed. I have a 4 profit and 1 owned record.

i was wondering, actually. if their method was really that tight, how would one exploit it?
even if you knew the method, your goal would still be to win every game, as well as you could. if there were other variables such as APM or whatever, no matter what they were, you'd still be striving to do well in them anyway
so my point is you'd still be doing the same thing as before you knew their formula: playing your best to win

Well... wanna share your realID or credit card info with me? Choose one from the two.
:)
And yes I checked and it seems only those two criteria I mentioned are used to put you in a league!

You can win all 5 and only get into gold, so no. In many systems, it might better if you "strategically lose a game".
Personally, I think the system is never pefect, and I don't really care. I just play and try to win every just like you.
I don't care if someone has more skill in getting a better placement, as long as I beat him in a 1v1.
I like to play SC2, I don't like to play a ladder system.

I've seen a lot of games end up with 200/200 where economies sky rocket while you wall them in, expand, and wait to be attacked. I guess that could screw up your league placement.
