It is a top priority of mine. There's a 24/7 Walmart around the corner from me I'm hoping will comply. If not I'll scour the great state of NY until I locate one.
I plan on stopping by several times to inquire personally with the game dept. Typically the people who work there are gamers themselves who are in the know, and may be able to throw me a bone. Doubt I'll pre-order in the offchance it falls through. I'd rather not commit to a vendor that may not be able to deliver.
As a backup plan I've been calling all the gamestops around to ask if they plan on a midnight release. Most aren't sure yet.
Have you ever done a midnight release buy at a Walmart?
Good news everyone:

So you just show up to the store at 12? No preorder or anything?
lol, hopefully we both will. I can call them now if you want to tell you what they say, but I don't see why we would need to preorder the game to pick it up at midnight. Should just be business as normal if it's 24/7
Tis stupid, I should be able to pick it up earlier than 12 if I am on the West Coast ;D
Don't preorder over the web, it doesn't give that option.
Have you guys ever been to a midnight release before? I never have, but I certaintly plan on going to the gamestop near me. :)
I'll call the gamespot, it's closer, but not for another 2 weeks at least.
i never have been to one, and im planning on changing that :D
Anyone know if you can pre-load the game from blizzard or steam?
Im pretty sure that blizzard will have it as a digital download, but im not sure if it will be available release day.
No preloading (as far as I am aware) and no digital download until a few days after release.
I'm getting mine from a store (most likely), and I don't think it's gonna be open at midnight :p.
Anyway, I dislike staying up ALL night for a game, but I'll be sure to pick it up first thing in the morning! I can say though that I'm not going to be getting much sleep that night though ;).
My whole family is always up at 12, so it's not weird at all .. for us
xD
Well, I'm almost always up at 12 too, it's just that if I get the game and start playing it then, I don't think I'll be able to put it down without playing at LEAST 8 hours of singleplayer :p. Best to start playing SC2 at the beginning of a new day when you have the whole day to play it!
Aparently the GameStop that I preordered my game in will not have a midnight launch because not enough people preordered there :(
WOW, you should get your money money back :O :O, or get really drunk to starve off the wait.
Didn't know they have Gamespots in Norway. Did you leave cash with them?
I always say don't preorder because there's always enough copies!
I bet you could probably get the game right when the store closes if you speak up, that's not cool!
The guys at EB Games here still aren't sure about a midnight release or standard opening, but I'm hoping for midnight. Although some international launches are synchronised world wide, ie it might be available at 11am here, 9am in the west, midnight east coast US, etc.
If it were synchronized worldwide that would save the Pacific coast, and the inferiors in our time zone (Hello Wyoming), 3 hours !
@Blazur: It's pretty bad that you have to go to a generic store like Walmart to get gamers who know their ass from a whole in the ground. You would, you know, a GAME store would have this same level of knowledge.
What I'm hearing from my GS (and others) is that when pre-orders exceed 300 or something then a midnight release happens, but even then they say you should call the week of to confirm they're doing that.
I'm sure SC2 has exceeded that, especially since they're advertising it all over the darn store. If all gamestops are doing that I wouldn't be too worried about not having enough pre orders unless you live in a ghost town, which is certainly not where I live.
300? EB Games here had a midnight launch for Wrath, and there was only 50 people there at most.
Who said everyone that pre-ordered has to be there at midnight? And I think this is a rough number. I'm going to ask again because the thing was sort of a blur, but the number was in the hundreds.
Still 3 weeks left, they could get more. Ask the week before the game releases.
I've been to several midnight releases over the years. They're incredibly fun because you know everyone there is the same flavor of nerd that you are. I won't be doing one this time though, my game is coming release date delivery from Amazon.
I'm not a nerd even if I go to a midnight launch.
Speak for yourself :D
I'm such a nerd that I plan on going to a midnight release wearing my I <3 SC shirt which I won by convincing a bunch of friends to pose for a pic in the mosaic.
So so non-Nerdy that I'm going to silently walk in, silently wait in line, silently buy the game, and silently leave all the while silently ignoring teh nerds.
Watch out Tychus, I heard nerd is contagious, especially in midnight release conditions. That's it's natural habitat.
I'm like a shark in that I can get no disease or contagion. However, I will still be wearing a "germ suit".
That's my plan as well. I've never had a problem getting a popular game on launch day before. And I have never put much faith in pre-orders.
I have quite a few 24-hour Wal-marts in my area. I plan on picking my copy up on my way into work on the 27th around 7AM...no midnight escapades for me.
Luckily, I know someone that works at Gamestop. No waiting in lines for me. However, I will be recording the midnight event to see if it will be epic.
the epicness depends on the area and location the store is in and if there are dedicated gamers around
I did a midnight release once... and I didn't feel as nerdy as I expected to.
It was for WoW's first expansion (and last one I would buy), Burning Crusade. It was pretty fun actually. I had egged some friends to tag along, and it was at the Fnac on the Champs Elysées. Quite a bit of stuff going on, especially since the planet hollywood a few buildings down was doing a promotion for Rocky Balboa, and Stalone himself was there.
On the Fnac side of things, there were some blizzard reps, cool decorations, stands for getting signatures, some free swag (that I couldn't get a hold of since it was so crowded) etc...
All very nerdy stuff, but the general atmosphere was cool. I was amazed by the age average. I guess parents don't let their kids do midnight releases, which is perfect! There were a bunch of 30/40year old couples, groups of friends, sometimes even families where the parents were much more hyped up than their 10y/o kids hehe.
We didn't bother with getting our copies signed or whatever though. We just got our games and headed back to the apt we had previously stocked up with food and beer to last us a while ;)
Sucks I'm not in Paris for the summer and I don't have any gamer friends here. I would have loved to do that again for SC2 : )
edit: ermm, dunno why I started blabbering about my life :p
My point: midnight releases can be fun ;)
It is ok Hammy we understand. I actually was at the BC midnight release too, but because I was the only one who knew wtf to do at the place I worked at /le sigh the downside of brilliance. I almost convinced the managers to let me make a video of a whole bunch of cut scenes and stuff from WoW to amuse the customers for the last few hours but they said no when they saw the Leroy Jenkins video. But even working at midnight releases are fun just because of the continuity that you have, it makes you feel far less alone then you might think.
Heck yeah, every Walmart near me is having midnight release :P
I know EB Games / Game Stop in Canada is doing it as well at select locations that have enough preorders.
Like someone said earlier most Gamestops "should" be doing a midnight release but it will vary from store to store. They have all said the exact same thing about calling about a week beforehand to check and see if the schedule said they will be open. Nearly all of the ones have said they met the preorder goal they needed to do a midnight release, but can not guarantee until they get the schedule. In other words, if you are not sure, ask and they will tell.
I'm going to BestBuy for a midnight release.
