Jmac speaks the truth.
Blizzard has said this will not happen if the community disagrees with the change.
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/co...or_about_this/
I can't believe that spychi and demosquid got banned for speaking out against Blizzard. They didn't even insult them! Is it sandwichbird who banned them?
And I dislike the potential stalking aspect this gives.
While I'm not against the change (mainly because I don't use the Blizzard forums) it can have negative consequences obviously. Maul, you forget that the internet doesn't forget things. Things you say now will still be around on the net 10 yrs after you have nothing else to do with them. I work as a store manager now and before I even call an applicant back for an interview I google their name. Most websites give you enough information to verify the person and something stupid you say now could come back to haunt you YEARS from now... and you wouldn't even know it.
It isn't so much that people know your name... its the ramifications it has on the people around you. How would you like to get fired from your job because some juicebag keeps calling your place of employment trying to get ahold of you and hanging up? Would you be appreciative of them calling your mom's house? With a little bit more knowledge you can signup for credit cards, take personal loans in someone elses name... you see where that's going.
Flipside...
Whether Blizzard does it or not you are still making the choice to give your name out. You just don't post and your name doesn't go out... that simple. It's not like there aren't a hundred places to talk about SC2 or Diablo or WoW that Blizzard doesn't control. You certainly aren't buying SC2 and saying, "Man, now I can pay to use some forums!" It's a bonus service you either do or do not take advantage of.
That's not what they got banned for. DSquid said Asians were ugly and got moderated. Spychi disagreed with the verdict and dared sandwich_bird to ban him.
Why would you assume it's for speaking out against Blizzard? The moderators here are best you're likely to find anywhere and a hell of a lot better than ones on other SC2 forums. I wouldn't be so quick to assume they're so illogical and unfair.
edit: okay, explanation right above me. thanks, post probably was deleted.
And yes, no WAY I'm giving out personal info like my real name online. Blizzard has to be kidding there, right? RIGHT??
Sure, most people know stuff about me but the internet is large and people I'd be weary off I can't identify there. You get my name when I trust you and not a second sooner.
Fox out
Ohh how fear makes the world go around, awesome stuff :)
Liquid`NonY joins the discussion
Some guy: I mean, are you willing to post your contact info publicly, as a moderately well-known person in the community? I wouldn't be..
NonY:
It has been available for years. All the top players' names have been known for years. Anyone who has participated in WCG has had their name published. Same with TSL. Hell, teamliquid.net has a database with that info. And beyond players, the names of commentators, news writers, fan site staff, Blizzard employees, etc are known. The addresses and real names of all the progamers in Korea are known.
People harass Bashiok now because they're assholes who are mad for reasons that they can't even explain, not because they couldn't harass Bashiok before.
If you don't think people should be harassed for publicly stating an opinion, then encourage the victims of harassment to report incidents to law enforcement. That shit isn't legal.

He kind of has a point there. Maybe it's time for the net to grow up. But why do I feel sad about that? :(
Because it is going to be a hard and bumpy road, for the net to grow up.
But I think that in the end (3-4) years ahead, it will create a greater and more open community.
I might be naive and get spammed to death:)
Make a new account with a fake name, problem solved.
Easy for you. Blizzard already has my real name and best email account, since I signed up for beta. :(
But why?
However anyone who isn't interested in gaming can visit a forum.
I know of a wiki vandal who spammed at least three wikis (StarCraft, Command & Conquer, and Transformers). He got perma-banned across all wikis fast, but one administrator tried to communicate with him more privately through email, and suffered lots and lots of spam as a result.
Now imagine if this vandal got free access to the names and possibly email addresses of people who he didn't like. He could spam all their inboxes, send them death threats in physical mail (unposted, of course... and yes, this vandal actually did send death threats through email), show up at their houses if he happens to live not too far from one of them, etc.
Stalkers aren't necessarily trolls. They might just lurk.
Kimera, simply make a new account. Should I really need to post, maybe that's what I'll do.
http://forums.battle.net/thread.html...=3000&pageNo=1
Apparently, Bashiok gave out his real name too early, and someone found out all his personal information, and may or may not be harassing him. It seems kind of insane to me to automatically give out people's real name, when the more prominent a member you become, the greater risk you run of this kind of hassle.
Well the internet is public space, and with all public spaces you can always meet jerks like that.
The big problem with the internet, is that weary few people is getting punished for, in reality breaking the law.
If we start seeing some really consequence, we will see less jerks like this.
I hope...
Can you actually just do that? Wouldn't I need a new email address? Or maybe I should make a new one I never use...
But if I use the same info as for my beta account (and I'd like to see if that does any good), I simply won't post on the battle.net forums. Ever.
I would assume you would still need a copy of SC2 registered to your account to post. If I recall the WoW forums don't allow posting without a WoW account.
i might actually try giving this a chance. but i hope that this wont cause any in game rage spilled over to real life rage.
EDIT: Oh poo, someone else got to the Bashiok part first. That's what I get for not reading the last page before a post.
REAL ID is great. Now future employers, lovers, friends, and plain old pals can dig up every grit of detail in your past/current life to the very thing you're doing at this moment, even if you don't tweet or wall it out; it's just out there. Isn't that great?
Just look at the blue posters such as Nethara and Karune. Their once private and active Facebook accounts are now public and so happening inactive just as they were linked out to the masses. I mean it's OK to do something terrible to someone else, like for say those pesky little blizzard customers, but when it happens to your self, well, that is when you need to pull out. Am I right or what?
Oh by the way, say hello to Bashiok (aka Micah Whipple, 28) @

UPDATE: Say hello to the entire Blizzard CM team screen-names, avatars, Real IDs, and other succuluent information. http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=25833933545&sid=3000
I just read Bashioks rant at the Subaru forums.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...1510923&page=2
Sounds like Blizzard is full of opportunistic pussies, but that's every office.
"but I just thought it was unprofessional of you to show up on the floor while intoxicated. Sorry man"Quote:
Oh, it was him, all right. I went up to his cubicle on the floor about an hour ago and asked him:
"Hey, did I disturb you in ANY way that night while I was intoxicated?"
Him: "No. Not really"
Me: "Did I disturb anybody else?"
Him: "No, not really. But I just thought it was unprofessional of you to show up on the floor while intoxicated. Sorry man"
So yes, it was him.
Translates to
"But I remember the time when you took credit for my work when reading through 100 pages of WoW commentary and suggestions, oh and then the time you took my Diet Pepsi. You jerk."
Anyways, bottom line is...this whole real.id thing is stupid as shit obviously. Bashiok...or Micah Whipple that is...has less privacy than Britney Spears now. His rants about his work place are all over and don't think for a second his fellow employees are not curious as to what he is saying behind their backs.
For example, Michah/Bashiok complains to his mother. We find out his mother's address/associations and find her post on a forum. She's asking advice because her adult son is contemplating doing [Questionable Action A] so she needs help.
Therefore Bashiok/Micha Whipple day dreams about [Questionable Action A]
WTF was blizzard thinking about? They're going to get sued to shit. If Bashiok was in anyway coerced or asked to do this, I think he has good grounds for a lawsuit against Acti-Blizz.
someone just posted this
~_~Quote:
However, if a large corporation says its going to put a fraction of that information out on the internet it will be seen as the greatest threat to human freedom since WWII.
I remember that. God, it was awesome.
Not as awesome as this.

Good old Halo kid.
http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008..._16Petric1.jpg
I don't think this will fly too fast, even WoW zombies have common sense and realize this is just too much.
Though I do realize this is for forum posts...if they do go with it...The forums will look like some charade/mechanical forum where everyone is paranoid.
Haha, you're right. That was even better.
You guys remember the guy that dropped from Battle.net, got out of his chair, went outside and stabbed someone? I think that was the scenario. It's a bit fuzzy. Kind of makes me want to go back to the good ol' days.
Oh, and it's just a matter of time until someone decides the 20 bucks is worth it for a criminal record:
http://www.veromi.net/order.asp?1=MI...m=kwVX00000006
This just keeps getting better and better. I hope Blizzard learns their lesson before this gets out of hand and an important developer ends up brutally murdered with a chainsaw.
I am wondering now if i will even purchase starcraft 2 with this change.
If getting whooped in melee and ranting about it for weeks didn't turn you off to SC2, this shouldn't.
Some people! Amirite?

I'm with you bro, but that isn't Bashiok posting.

I know those guys, they're not in my team, however. I did drink with their boss during the event, though.Quote:
you work for Blizzard Entertainment? Whose your boss Martin Tande? Micah Whipple? Chad Jones how about Brett D?
Ask if they remember a guy named Sujak on battle.net on USEast server. Martin Tande hiated me, Micah W was nice and so was Brett D they would actually hang out with us in a random channel, then Martin put an end to it.
yes but this is two different things. One is a gameplay issue another is privacy related.
1) Don't get popular on the forums.
2) Change your name or email address.
"Just to respond to those that don't think we read through all of these responses and threads, we do and have been. We will continue monitoring feedback as well.
We put a lot of thought into this change and have a long-term vision for the Real ID service and wanted to make sure that we communicated ahead of time and very clearly as to what will be changing and how. Keep in mind that posting is optional."
They're keeping it in.
Looks like they're sticking to it. Oh well, just one less reason to post on Battle.net forums.
SCL FTW!!!
Yes but there goes any bug discussion or balance discussion for blizzard to read. They are doing hari kari to there own community.
But do you really want privacy?
