SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
Re: SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
Good job! This story seems nice but am not so die-hard lore fan to buy it XD
Well, thanks instead for a general idea of the book and the info you provided. Since you said it was rather disapointing, then I'll take it as background support rather than as a novel per se.
Re: SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
I thought it was really good.
I was only dissapointed at the fact that it didn't go further into Jim Raynor's life.
Like how he married a ghost and their child got killed or something, right?

Raynor married a colonist named Lidia and they had a son, Johnny. He had telepathic ability and was taken for "gifted education" by the Confederation. Jim had distrust of the Confederation but Lidia wanted Johnny to go and learn. A few months later they received a letter saying Johnny had died in a "shuttle accident," and Lidia blamed herself. She caught the flu and died from a combination of that and grief.

Re: SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
How Raynor became a marshal is briefly covered in Homecoming (a short story in Frontline Volume 4).
While I was hoping to see more detail about Raynor's between-the-wars exploits in Heaven's Devils, I think it was a very good book with intricate plotting. I've read several other Dietz books, and this is by far the best, even trying to take pro-StarCraft bias into account.
Re: SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in SC1 didn't the Raynor family die from the Zerg? Isn't this contradicting.

What? No. Where the hell would you hear something like that?
Re: SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
It's actually from Eye of the Storm:
"The zerg have taken everything away from me. My family, my friends..."
It may be a reference to John and Liddy, what with Raynor linking the zerg to the Ghost Program. Other than that, maybe Trace and Karol were killed during the Great War by the zerg. Maybe Shiloh was invaded.

From SC last mission briefing:
-Raynor-
“Well, I guess all I have left is to see this through, the Zerg have taken everything from me: my home, my family, my friends, I know that nothing I do can bring those things back, but I’ll be damned if I just sit on my hands and wait for the end. I want a piece of ‘em all right. I’m in”
Edit: -_- Hawki beat me to it
Re: SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
The canon lore says Johnny was conscripted to the Ghost program and "supposedly" died in a shuttle accident, and Lidia died from flu and grief. It was a few years after that the Zerg first invaded Mar Sara.
Re: SC:L Reviews Heaven's Devils
If the 2495 figure in HD is correct, then there's probably only a year between John and Liddy's deaths and the start of GW. His Shiloh family are another matter. Shiloh appears to now be a Dominion world, but it could have still been invaded and even purified. Mar Sara and Chau Sara were resettled after all.

Not all marines are resocs. A lot are simply conscripts or volunteers.

Marine volunteers? Why would someone volunteer to that? Money?

To be the first to explore the unknown regions of space!
To fight for freedom and justice!
To serve the Dominion!
Because they're bored!
Just because!
. . .
Seriously a lot of people join the military IRL just because of that.
That's the whole purpose of propaganda campaign, to make it look like an extraordinary adventure full of honor and glory, in order to attract those who seek more in life than what they have.

But...but...they fight with uber-strong physcos, swarms of vile giant insects, and even between themselves
Real life you seek a third-world country to blame and invade and take all their possesions verdad?

XD yeah but most times that third-world country is full to the brim with people who will fight to their last in order to kill you and your fellow soldiers (Vietnam anyone?) And also, remember that in SC2 Zerg and Protoss have been innactive for at least 4 years, which means that the marine corps just seek a colony world which is being hinted as rebellious to invade and take it's possesions ;)

Some people are highly disciplined and prefer a structured lifestyle.
That's assuming there's no immediate threat or else the reasons are obvious. Hitler anyone?
