I'd be surprised if this is the case. It could simply mean that the new identification system is not ready and is going to be patched in some time in July while the second phase is going on; that is, the actual beginning of the second phase could still be some time in June. On the other hand, it would be rather silly to begin the new phase with an old identification system.

Thoughts?

P.S. That thread mostly contains more discussion on the new identification system in that thread, so have a look around and see what the blues have to say.

Phase 2 will not start until July. They said that it would return "a couple weeks before release". Phase 2 is more than likely more of a stress-test than anything else.

My mind have been saying July, but my gaming hart has been saying June, so I'm not really that surprised.

Going to a music festival (Roskilde Festival) all of the last week of June, and when I come back it is all about phase 2 awesome :)

Someone expected June? What about "a couple of weeks" didn't they understand? At best, it would be something late like June 26.

A "couple" could've just as easily been two as it could've been three or four. :p

Of course, it could still be two. We'll just have to see in a few days.

Few = 2-3 (June 21 - 28) - I can understand holding hope for the later days of this estimate but when you get there, you might as well wait a few days to be in July :D
Couple = 3-4+ (July 5-12) These are the most likely to me since, otherwise, why even have phases? I don't see much getting done earlier than this to warrant shutting down the server.

I think you have those two backwards.

A couple is usually 2-3 (a boyfriend and a girlfriend might also be known as a COUPLE, there are lots of other common uses of the word as well that make it more likely to be 2-3)

Meanwhile, "a few" is some smallish number that is greater than one. It CAN be two, but since "couple" is generally used for that number then people usually say few when it is greater than 2.

Really though, they are pretty interchangeable these days despite the fact that couple is formally supposed to be just two (or a pair).

I was personally expecting late june, but it isnt a big deal.

Hmmm, never thought of it that way. I live in Miami where there's tons of New Yorkers and that's the usage I've heard the most. Other minorities have their own slang for the ideas so they don't count.

I guess that explains a lot. Never thought something like that would be regional.

I live southeastern US. I had always heard 2-3 for a couple, 3-4 for a few, 4-5 for some, 5-7 for a bunch, and 7-9 for many, and 10+ for lots.

In proper English (traditional British):
- "A couple' is 2.
- "Few" is 3-4.
- "Several" is 5-9.
- "Some" is usually associated with "a select few".
- "Many" is 10+

For "a bunch", I think you're right for it being an in-between number like 5-7.

I would expect 3 weeks minimum for proper testing. There are still some balance issues to iron out alongside the Bnet testing. This will most likely be stress testing the latter, as was said.

Off topic:

The approximate definitions of a couple (2), few(3-5), several(6-10ish) and many are in line with dictionary definitions, numbers not withstanding. Some is typically used regardless of number to simply state you have less than the entire amount.

Personally, I prefer a counting system I picked up from a college professor who I had for one class: 1, 2, much, and many, with much and many being open to arbitrary definitions. ;) . That said, it will not be much time because we do not have that many days until release. :)

Sorry man, it is in July and it has nothing to do with the features. They are still initiating the hardware world wide. I think you're under-estimating how large of an undertaking that task is alone.

They have to install a metric f**k ton of new hardware and probably do some minor recoding. Also, I expect them to implement (even if minor tweaks) an updated UI, and balancing changes. The beta will come back online to stress test their new hardware and iron out any last minute bugs that may effect Bnet prior to launch.

Hopefully we won't have any profile resets after launch. lol

But yeah, July for sure IMO. And not just early July, I am expecting a mid July relaunch.

I dont think a mid july relaunch would give enough time to iron out bugs that may be introduced in the next patch or fix any hardware/network issues that occur. Remember, they need to actually put the game on disc and ship them to retailers as well and I dont think they want to ship a game that has some major flaw and force a day 1 patch to fix it.

Yes and no to the hardware. AT&T handles that. But I'm sure because of the scale of how many servers and the software required to install, they need to give AT&T a lot of notice/time.

After the beta ended, I would imagine they went ASAP on work for a Gold processing Candidate that was stable/good to be shipped off so they can print off the CD's. After that, more polishing and getting whatever the heck they want into phase 2?

They said a day 1 patch on retail release date is almost 100% guaranteed.
I guess there is a lot of unfinished business behind the scenes. Otherwise Phase 2 would be up if it was simple as hardware changes on the "To Do list"

I know they've got new sounds for the Bnet2 interface, but I'm not sure about new sounds for SC2 itself. Most likely not, but there's no proof that there won't be new stuff. Could very well be new stuff. Just don't expect it.

Ever since Patch 14 (or 15), I totally forgot how Bnet use to sound like. Personall, I can care less about new sounds. It would be nice if they can change a few things with the voices of the units. Alot of complaints about hearing the Zealot yell "we can not hold", when one zergling would attack it (LOL?). However, I would love to see new animations or some polished graphics.

I just hope the beta re-launch will be bug free. The blacked out minimap was just so strange....

Yeah, some of those "we are under attack" sounds made the units seem pretty whimpy.

A Stalker will be like, "Fall back to the shadows!" and I'll be like, "Dude — you outnumber them 10 to 1!! WTF?!?!?!"

Back "on-topic": A few is defined by freedictionary.com as "more than one; an indefinably small number" while couple is defined by "A few; several". Given this, I'd say it whatever you want to be and that's why it's so regional.

You had to go pretty far down to find that "a few; several" part :P
It is under the "informal" area where that definition is listed.

Oddly enough, to the left you have it say "Commonly Confused: several" then down below in the idiom's you have "a few".

A couple can always be a few but a few can not always be a couple. I think that is the best way that I can describe the two.

We must be using different dictionaries (I said the wrong one) because I didn't have any of that. The first three definitions don't apply to this so I went down until I reached on that did which was the one I brought up.

1. Two items of the same kind; a pair.
2. Something that joins or connects two things together; a link.
3. Two people united, as by betrothal or marriage.
4. Informal A few; several.

Now my head is really hurting. Anyways, obviously, it's just another incorrect usage among the trillions that can be found in urban America :D

In my area and when used by me or in a sentence directed to me I always assume a couple means exactly 2.

Obviously this doesn't mean I'm right, it's just how it is for me.

If they are adding hardware, how do you guys think they are gonna stress them? Additional keys? Open Beta?

And on the discussion about the word "couple". Isn't the word "couple" synonymous with the word "pair"? So, "a couple" = "a pair" = 2?

They work side-by-side with AT&T engineers to get this task done. I know because I was talking with one of them who is currently travelling the US doing so, our conversation was ended because he had to board a plane.

Regarding the Gold-processing canidate, you are pretty spot on, but the day 1 patch is mostly a result of them working up until release and after on the project, so it's nothing massive I'd say. (Not to imply that you were suggesting it was)

Yeah, knowing Blizz...Phase 2 of the beta will begin exactly two weeks prior to release.
