It seems like there's a big emphasis on 3D lately, and a lot of people seem to be trying to cash in on this "trend". We have movies that utilized 3D exceptionally, like Avatar, and movies that did a crab job like Clash of the Titans. Then we have the 3DS, and all the games receiving 3D support on PC. And now these 3D newspapers.
What do you guys think? Do you think this is just a gimmick that will soon die after people get bored of it? Or do you think it's here to stay for a while?

Re: Is 3D the next big thing?
It makes me sick, I really really hate 3d.
I HOPE its a gimmick and I think it is kinda a gimmick, but I think we'll have to deal with it for a few years - this years e3 is going to be 3d spamfest and I think alot of people will not approve.
I feel like 3d would be nice every now and then but I don't understand why people feel like its the "next" thing, its certainly a side step in display tech not a step forward. I don't want to buy a 3d tv or put on Glasses (curious on how the 3ds is going to do it without glasses though). To me it doesn't improve the immersion at all, it dose the opposite.
Fuuuuuuuu please die off 3d T_T

My feelings exactly.
Anybody see Sunshine...they had something like a holodeck in that movie, only far more realistic and believable tech. they used it to make the very long trip to the sun bearable. That's the direction I hope we head once we get over this Second Coming of 3D. Total immersion, not just flimsy glasses.
Here's the trailer...
Awesome movie by the way. Didn't get the recognition it deserved.

Anyone who is against 3D viewing is going to miss out on a huge part of entertainment history. I'll dish out the 5 grand when I get a job. It is worth it. If someone is bad sick by them, suck for them. If they can't afford it, suck for them. I think people that dislike 3D viewing just can't afford it. :D

Oh, I can afford it...I just don't want to blow money on repackaged 1950s tech. Granted, its far superior now...its just not revolutionary.

I'm not saying it isn't cool or anything...I just want us to get past this infatuation with it and move on to full immersion.
Islandsnake was right in saying this is a sidestep in display technology, not a shove forward.

I'm tired of 3D. When it becomes a transmissive medium, then we'll talk. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, it's a dead-end. Sorry, Warsaw.
Sunshine was a spectacular movie.

Well until then they still need to fucking work on it. Since when did all you people become geek techs who know shit about 3D tvs and holo decks? I mean if you wanted something that was full immersion... how fucking long is that off? How about the cost alone? I'm thinking 3D tvs are fine until that comes into play.
Come on people.

For me, it's simple practicality. When I was young, I enjoyed all those neat 3D movie experiences they had at museums in Tennessee. Nowadays, I avoid them because of the eye strain.
Really, what more can you do with it? It's currently a dead-end, isn't it? Give me autostereoscopy.

Re: Is 3D the next big thing?
How the fuck is it at a dead end if it's going to be used for years to come. A dead end? It's finished is more like it. They can finally put it into videos games so we can have exsplosion in the middle of our fucking living rooms. I mean jesus fucking christ. That's pretty fucking incredible just for some glasses that no one is going to ever see you wear unless you play in your front yard. And what fucking movies did you see in some shitty god damn museum as a kid compared to killzone 2 in 3d? That's a pretty fucking retarded comparison for your eye strains. Practicality? What Practicality are talking about? How is it impractical to play a 3D game?

Hmm... I remember reading about it in Time Magazine, and maybe Popular Science. I thought about picking it up, but it looked like "The Core" in SPACE!
Might drop by Hastings and see...

Meh. I'll support ending the hype over 3D when people quite talking about how the Wii controller is a step forward in game control.
I don't think it's going anywhere. Hopefully, it'll become more of a tool (ala Avatar) and less of a gimmick (Ala Shrek 4). Eventually, the glasses will phase out in favor of autostereoscopy, which I believe is no more than ten years away.

Re: Is 3D the next big thing?
3d always feels fake to me and it distracts me from whats going on, I didn't really like Avatar in 3d more than in 2d. I don't want shit flying around the room when im watching a movie or playing games. I didn't like popout books more than real books. ( No that its exactly the same)
I don't what my games to get the 3d treatment in the same way I don't want my games to be focused on using a stupid controller (move) or waving my body around at the screen like a moron(natal). I feel like now we are going to get a bunch of tacked on 3d that isn't that great(because devs will feel pressured to throw 3d into games) and a few games designed around 3d that lack in other departments with maybe 1-2 gem that are good.
I don't mind new technology, and I thought seeing avatar in 3d was interesting - But I didn't go home and want everything I play to be like that.
Though I think the companys as far as games go will hopefully focus more on there motion controllers instead of 3d, since you have to buy the motion controllers from them. And as far as 3d movies are concerned, I could care less and will always opt for the cheaper 2d option but I wonder how long it will last, right now its a great way to get people to the theaters but I dont think it the hype will last forever, specially if they haphazardly slap 3d into movies.
So I don't think 3d is the next big thing, but I do think it will stay around.

Re: Is 3D the next big thing?
Wow, Warsaw, seriously. Calm down, people don't like 3D, what's your problem? They feel it's not worth it, it's their opinion. Can you stop flinging the F bomb around everywhere?
Secondly, just because you like 3D doesn't make it the bomb, doesn't make it the best, doesn't make it whatever. That's your opinion.
Personally I don't care either way where 3D heads. As long as there is a 2D option (I get headaches from watching 3D) then everybody wins, no need to get so emotion ocean over it.
As for skipping out on 3D because your sole reason is that "it's a side step in technology, not a revolution" well, that seems kind of lame to me as an excuse. It makes you sound like you're only interested in forwarding the world with revolutionary technology and aren't interested in any advancements in already developed technology. So I'll just stick with my windows 98 till a new comp that can sense my brain waves come out, since really, new computers aren't anything revolutionary. They're just advancements in already existing technology.

Umm... fuck no?
Comparing Modern day 3D in the comfort of your own home... then talking about holo decks and full immersion... comparing it to some old 3d movie you say in some museum. Calling 3D a side step even though we wont have full immersion for god knows how long. We haven't even started to use 3D tech to it's full potentional and people are already bashing it. No sir I think that's pretty stupid.
However I do like your last paragraph. Very good points. I mean isn't color TV at a dead end? Fuck color TV it's a total side step until we have full immersion. I don't want to watch an action scene, I want to be in the action scene so TV's are just a waste until then.

Hey! It was a very good museum experience, thank you very much. :p
But back to the eye-strain thing: it's estimated that up to 70% of American adults use visions correction. I'd think producers would want to take that into consideration when considering their demographics, at least.

Really? 70%? That seems quite steep. What age is that? If you're talking about old people well they aren't playing video games anyway. There is something about that percentage that seams really, really, really, off.
I don't know what you call it, but it sounds like they just surveyed a select number of people. I doubt 70% of American adults use glasses.
