Ultralisks Pretty Scary now!
So i've been running some test with the latest patch. With the damage decrease with tanks. I find ultralisks are pretty fearsome if you can just get more than one. Not only do Ultralisks tank well, but they give any kind of ball, mech or infantry, a lot of damage with splash. That if the Ultralisk is backed up with anything, whatever is left over will usually clean up the mess.
The advantage of Ultralisk is their splash. They're about the only unit the Zerg has that can deal with clumps.
The advantage of Brood Lords is their siege range and they fly. So things like tanks and marauders don't target them.
So maybe... if people go heavy anti-air, ultralisks paired with hydras do well. While if people go heavy anti-ground, brood lords are the answer. Yea? I dunno. But I definitely am starting to see how Ultralisks can be fearsome!
Re: Ultralisks Pretty Scary now!
ultras are fearsome...as long as they can close in on their target. i played around a bit with ultras vs marauders in the editor though, and they're still not effective cost-for-cost because the marauders can kite them with stim too easily. however, in a big battle, if the ultras can get in close, then they absolutely wreak havoc.
Re: Ultralisks Pretty Scary now!
Has anyone seen the glitch where if a unit is juuuuuuuuuuust fast enough like a marauder no stim running away the ultra will do its attack animation but then not do damage.
Re: Ultralisks Pretty Scary now!
Has anyone tried overlord dropping 3-4 Ultralisks into the middle of a group while A-moving a large ground army? I wonder how that would work.

Yes, I think this is another problem with the ultralisk: The attack. While marauders can just plain kite easily with stim, when the ultralisks do get in range and manage to get a swipe, often times they'll make the animation but zero damage occurs.

Why? That doesn't make sense. The whole purpose of the unit is that it can survive until it reaches melee range, and they're better at soaking up damage than hydra. If you want to drop something you should drop banelings.
Re: Ultralisks Pretty Scary now!
I think the complaint regarding ultralisk mobility isn't really different than thors...I mean, think, you can't really kite with lings, but the fact of the matter is, a group of lings destroys a thor WAY too easily.
I think that hard counters are difficult to come by, but marauders vs. ultralisks and lings vs. thors are indeed hard counters.
The fact that tossing in other units to make superior combos simple means that you're being dynamic and utilizing the strength of different units to conver each other's weaknesses.
Note that thors are often dropped to harass...why can't ultralisks just be dropped into a main army? Engage + drop ultras in the back? Flank with them? Unburrow them?
The options are honestly limitless...A-moving is simply not an optimal strategy. It doesn't matter no matter what unit you're using.

The problem to begin with was the fact that they died before they could do anything. Don't know if that's changed now since I haven't played the last couple of patches, but yeah. What's the point in making Ultralisks if they A) Can't even do their job properly B) Can't even reach enemies to utilize their damage? So in that case dropping makes perfect sense. And it's hell of a lot easier than dropping banelings, but whatever floats your boat.
Saying dropping them doesn't make sense is the exact same as saying unburrowing them while an army passes over doesn't make sense.
Re: Ultralisks Pretty Scary now!
Dropping Ultras into your army can be fun and very hazardous to your opponent's well-being if done with the right timing or proper tech concealment. Surprise is very helpful. Even if your opponent scouted the Ultra den, would he/she reasonably expect an Ultra drop? Not really. HIgh level and progamers may very well anticipate this, but medium and low levelers may just crap their pants and quit.
There are several scenarios where an Ultra drop would be insanely good. Let's start by engaging the enemy with other units and making it look like the Ultra den was a ruse. Soften the enemy forces geared toward Ultra killing. Then drop Ultras. Many variations exist, including especially where you drop the Ultras. "Into your army" need not mean amidst their numbers. How about just behind enemy lines while a mix of other units creates a distraction?
I personally would rather use a nydus network to pop'em in the enemy base after drawing their forces out. 2-4 Ultras on the resource line with the army out of place? Priceless. :)

This issue is exactly why Eligor & I came up with a idea of a Running Charge ability being discussed in this thread.
