Why do people talk about lore so much on here? It's just a game.

Ok I just posted that so all the nerdw ould quickly look at this...
I like this site alot and alot of the people on it its all cool but I see these threads and posts people goin through paragraphs of Starcraft lore and history and mechanics ect ect and its like wow...do u really waste ur life studying a video game like this...its fun to play and all but u all just take it over the line why dont u do something productive then learn everything about something that doesnt really exist...
Its pathetic..old ass people livin with their parents (not all but some) not doin anything because all they wanna do is game...
a game is a free-time thing not a whole lifestyle...

What does it matter to you if people want to talk about a game? It's not affecting you in any way at all.

This post is more a reflection on you considering the fact that you post here. Maybe you require a lifetime of study to figure out this game's mechanics, but for many of the people here this is just a small hobby. Seems to me that you're just butthurt that you have nothing of value to contribute, and this is your excuse.

I'm not quite sure on what intent or purpose this thread seeks to achieve.

Anyhow, as to your argument, my response is because it's enjoyable and it hurts no one. I don't know why, but those libertarian values make so much sense that I don't understand why people even care about what people do, much less spend their time to make a thread about it. ;)

You could make the same argument against almost any personal hobby that doesn't positively impact society (woodworking, sports, cooking, etc.). With woodworking, if you're not a professional carpenter, then it's fruitless. It's highly unlikely you'll make a living playing basketball. And unless you're a professional chef, you should only cook so much as to give you the nutrients required for a day.

For you, why are you on a StarCraft fan forum? Why do you play video games? Why are you on the computer for anything besides work or school related activities? Get off and save the world. Volunteer for your local community, spend a day at an old folk's home, clean up litter, etc. You're obviously not doing anything productive either.

And I seriously though anyone here actually eats and sleeps StarCraft. Most of the activities that you put down probably take less than an hour of anyone's day. :p

If you want fact, go pull your own brain out of your head and try to see what the chemicals are doing. That can also be meaningful to some people...

I always like a good story and SC delivers on that. Plus it gives those that take games as an artform something to think, discuss and enjoy just like they would when they read a book of say Lord of the Rings or even a Non-fiction book as well as movies. Me like the thread...it achieved something. reflection of why do -I- like lore. But then again I knew the answer all along since I consider games as an artform. And Im a sucker for a good story *cough*

I chalk it up to good ol curiosity, I hear a story and I wanna dig deeper into it learn more about the world the characters and there history, when you read a good book or watch a good movie do you not wonder about things like that?

This is one of the best posts I've seen on this forum. There are very few things that people still do that are basic (instinctive) and aside from those everything is just passing time a la a game does. Even basic needs, though, are biological cues from chemicals. It doesn't actually matter. Only the desire to live and procreate makes it matter.

Yes, there are people who play games just to zone out. However, games have a story just like books and movies. Some people play games for the story, some people like to discuss that story and explore all its possibilities.

It doesn't mean we're nerds with no life. Hell, I pity the people who zone out on Madden and the like, because they're usually the people who enjoyed watching T:RotF or Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigilo. You know, the kind of juvenile crap that poses as humor?

What's ironic is you're wasting your time posting here. Why? Listen to your own advice and go do something more productive with your life! You can't possibly achieve nor hope to achieve anything by ranting like that here. It's not like you're going to change our minds. See how I turned what you just said against you?

I have also several points to make:
- We don't have that many lore threads as much as we have threads about gameplay, updates, game release, etc.

- Hey, we talk about lore because we want to understand it. In the end, yeah, it's just a game, but who cares? We like this game's universe, and we want to understand it, so we discuss it and try to make sense of it.

- Haven't you ever dreamed, or indulged in a movie, TV series or a book? Don't you look for drama or action?

- Instead of giving crap to others, getting into trouble, fights and what not, we indulge into games and it makes us more stable. I also find some novels, games and movies help understanding people, how they behave and how the world goes around (to an extent. I don't presume to understand everything nor that fiction is reality; Fiction has tendencies to exaggerate, though StarCraft doesn't do that as much as other series, and some tend to underplay emotion and whatnot, like Halo.).

- This does not mean by any chance we don't have a life outside of video games. We all do. I personally can't stand being glued to a PC/video game/fantasy world every waking hour of my life. I have to get out and experience something, and I admit that sometimes nothing interesting happens, that some people would rather go towards novels, movies and games for that kind of stuff to happen. Telling a story and being part of one; It's all part of a process called self-actualisation that plays with what makes us human. It allows us to explore ourselves, explore different possibilities, to evolve mentally and to THINK and PONDER. StarCraft isn't a one-sided story about a human character that wins through his will to live and some simply crap like that. It's more complex. It's not black and white.

- Games are not A lifestyle, they are part of one.

- Productivity depends on emotion, on perspective. Anything that is sentient (can think, like us), but that has no emotion has no will to live nor to die, and thus, cannot have a definition of "productivity". It seems you lack an understanding of what humans are like. Do you socialize a lot? How old are you? If you have emotions or something to get off your chest, we're willing to listen to you, but insulting us will not make us want to listen to you. We can understand if you apologize and try to act civilized, but simply feeling oppressed and as a result, throwing out prejudice onto us (let's face it, what you said is all prejudice, you have no proof we're like that) will not make your situation better, only worse. People are gonna feel insulted and insult you back and hate you too, and find reason that that's why others hated you too and it made you feel lonely and rant like that to us, as if it's a repetitive cycle. So you're only hurting yourself, really.

- Do you like philosophy? You strike me as the guy who's too lazy to bother with thinking much, and you don't seem like the kind of guy that argues. Tell me, do you have any pleasure or goals in life?

Agreed... I thoroughly enjoy the direction video games have taken over the past ten years (i.e. more story-driven games with dense lore and universe)

I think Bioware is one of the best video game companies because of their attention to lore. I mean, have any of you guys read all of the codexes for Dragon Age or Mass Effect? It really is a "book" of sorts. It's just accompanied by an enjoyable game that correlates with the story. I wouldn't be surprised if some video game companies start creating stories and build the actual game from the story as opposed to the other way around (I'm sure some already have but I'm not aware of any)
