what is thorīs weapon , acelerator of plasm or a gauss canon?
I'm pretty sure it's been described as an energy weapon. (I think a physical weapon would have been cooler, though.)
You just answered your own question. Its a particle accelerator. It accelerates a particle of (insert element here) to hypersonic velocities and ejects it with so much force it causes damage. A small object impacting with massive force and speed can do the same damage as a large object impacting with less force and speed. This is why a small bullet can hurt you just as easily as throwing a large rock.
Sir Issac Newton is the deadliest son of a bitch in space.
precisely! plasma would be relatively equally deadly regardless of speed because the 'weapon' part of it is not the speed, but the heat that it carries. Whereas a gauss cannon is deadly because it can accelerate an object (like a bullet) to immense speed using magnets rather than gunpowder, the speed of which is what is the 'weapon'.
EDIT: Demo- he's not just just the deadliest son of a bitch, but he's one motorboatin' son of a bitch!
I have no doubt about their power (in fact I suppose that would be more powerful with plasma), but wanted to know if there is a description or reference on the nature of their ammunition (novel, comic, etc).,
yeah, it's basically a compact, weaponized version of this:

Accelerating particles to higher and higher speeds lets us know what the conditions were like at the big bang, and improved knowledge of particle physics could open the door to revolutionary discoveries and improvements in many fields.
No it doesn't - that's been more than refuted.
Oh, I know the thing has amazing potential for pushing scientific discovery, but I just kind of think these scientists are playing with fire. It's no different than the Manhattan project 60 something' years ago. Those scientists had no idea what was going to happen when they touched off that first test nuke.
I don't pretend to understand all of the information contained in the 2003 safety report, the Study of Potentially Dangerous Events During Heavy-ion Collisions, by the LHC Safety Study Group or the 2008 Review of the Safety of LHC Collisions by the LSAG, but neither report actually refutes the possibility of micro black holes and/or other gravitational anomalies forming during collisions at the LHC. They simply indicate the extreme unlikelihood of one becoming a threat.Quote:

Micro black holes would, if I recall correctly, be much smaller than most atoms. They wouldn't have the gravitational pull to attract even small molecules. If they come into existence, they are literally no threat.
And experts said that with today's technology and strict regulations, off-shore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico would be perfectly safe. Uh huh...well, we all know how that's working out.
Concerning CERN and the LHC, I'm not convinced that what these scientific "experts" profess is 100% truthful...or maybe a better word would factual. They are dealing with an area of physics and gravitational gobbledygook that we have only really been tinkering with for what, maybe a 100 years. And half of that was on paper. We didn't go actually fiddling with uranium and splitting atoms until the 1940's.
It's kind of like a gun in the hands of a five-year-old. The gun may or may not be empty, but as the only adult in the room, would you want to take the chance of letting him tinker with it. No!
Trouble is...there are no adults (technologically advanced alien space bats, Q, or [insert your preferred higher being here]) around to tell us little kiddies to stop messing with this stuff before we blow our metaphorical feet off.
Well i guess that these aliens hadnt had such help for themselves either....so they are already dead...so we will die too....and this is pretty much the end for all sentient species in the universe....they advance in tech...discover particle accelerators...make them more powerful and then get killed by it.....2012....mini black hole gone BAD
As far as I know, there's more dangerous stuff in the higher atmosphere to be afraid of than anything that goes on in that accelerator.
Stuff in our atmosphere has been going on for 4.5 billion years, so that's enough time for us to know by now whether it forms a stable black hole, which it clearly doesn't. The problem is that stuff going on in the accelerator is newly forged ground, with the chance that there might be a calculation we overlooked and a stable black hole could form. But really, you could say that about anything, and it's clear there's no real chance of a stable black hole forming.
call the hadron collider the human race just livin' a little! whats life without risk?
Maverick...
There is a fine distinction between caution and paranoia.
From where you're standing, I believe that line is way over the horizon thataways.

I'd rather think of it as being humble, not outright paranoia. When you're dealing with the power of creation...even on a small scale like these Particle Accelerators, I think you have to remain humble, first and foremost.
I want to be wrong about these machines, believe me. I hope that they do help us in the long run. I think they are going to be our gateway to unlocking newer, better sources of energy, FTL technology, dark matter, the god particle and a host of other equally important discoveries. I just want these scientist to be careful. Very, very, very careful.
I've said my piece. Viva La LHC!!!
There's nothing science has done that hasn't already happened in the cosmos a number of times already. What the LHC tries to do happens in the upper atmosphere of our planet all the time, as an example. The LHC just tries to re-create that in a controlled enviroment where specific observations can be made.
"Truthers"
A sad subset of the Conspiracy Theorist community, they believe that the Government absolutely positively knew that the Twin Towers were going to be attacked, and didn't do a thing about it.
Or the Government destroyed the buildings with preplanted explosives.
Or the attack on the Pentagon was a cruise missile.
Any attempt to point out facts concerning time tables, the high-temperature strength of structural steel, or actual pictures of airplane wreckage at the Pentagon results in them clapping their hands over their ears and screaming "BLAHBLAHBLAHBLAH!"
