Is getting to Hive worth it?

Here's what you can get at hive:

1. Adrenal Glands
2. Roach Regen upgrade
3. Ultras (also need Ultra Cavern)
4. Broodlords (also need Super Spire)
5. 3rd dmg/armor upgrades.

1. This is good but by this point of the game vs Z you can expect ultras, vs P you can expect Collosi making Lings less viable for production.

2. Almost useless

3. Awesome, but capital ships are a problem. Stalkers and Marauders put a big push to them. Maybe I haven't seen them used effectively on other than Z matchups?

4. Awesome, basically my only incentive into going T3.

5. If I get time and extra resources, I get this.

Yeah, Ultras are very good in certain situations and as you noted Brood Lords are awesome. Otherwise, though, there's not much there.

I have yet to see a situation in a high level game where Ultras were actually cost effective and won the game. Maybe you guys could enlighten me?

T3 upgrades and Brood Lords are my incentive. I am crazy obsessed with upgrades :p usually a very high priority for me to get early on, meaning i will be at level 2 by mid game. I don't use brood lords that much, so T3 probably isn't that worth it just for getting those final weapon and armor upgrades but i do it anyways :D

I got a replay here somewhere, I were totally crushed. But after I got those broodlords I almost mannaged to destroy his army.

Its worthwhile if you have a stockpile of resources to get broodlords.

Otherwise it really depends on the specific game and T3 upgrades may be good.

At the moment, Hive is almost synonymous with Brood Lords, but that's reason enough to get to Hive :p.

The main problem right now is if you get scouted while you're morphing your hive your oppenent won't have much of a doubt why you're doing it...broodlords beeing the only good reason. Of course you can exploit that flaw by not doing them and surprising him but it's still quite sad.

It's really hard to get ultras, since you will almost need to spend the gas income on tier 2 units in order to defend against the other race's fire power.

I don't know how well ultras fare against immos though.
