I actually really like the Infestor...
Anyone agree?
I was playing around with these guys the other night, and they are a great support unit especially with immobilization...that dot...and infested terrans they can pop out a bunch and really amp up DPS quickly now. Plus it looks sick.
I know the infested terrans have to "hatch" but its the same build time as the raven's auto turret essentially...similar idea.

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
i think they are decent, but i feel its out of my way to get it, course i dont play zerg alot
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
takes careful maneuvering but they beat massed marauders kiting thing.
Ultras can then just run through them "without issue".
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Shame they very seldom make it onto the fields of battle. Likewise for the Ultralisk. They're such late-game, and it's almost more cost effective to simply amass the generic fighters (lings, hydras, mutes and roaches).
Meh...

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I switched from toss to zerg lately and have been pwning faces nonstop with everything BUT infestors. Maybe I'll try getting them a few times, however I feel that my gas can be better used elsewhere. They are a caster and not an AA unit so.. it seems more effective to upgrade your lings and mutas/corruptors. I feel as though the infestor pit has become the queen's nest of sc2, something you only get to reach a hive upgrade. T3 lings are just so tempting. (3/3 upgrades + speed and +20% attack speed) So my resources end up going there usually.

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I used to think Infestors were awesome.
Until they nerfed their speed and HP. I didn't care what spells they had, those speed and health values made them SO fun to play with.
They're way too fragile now for me to consider really using them that often. They'll just die immediately unless you're uber careful with them.

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I find the fungal growth to be really effective for stopping void rays from running away from hydras. It's a good ability to be used in ambushes, and I imagine you could do some pretty decent worker harass if you can get a few of them back there - 2 fungal growths will wipe out any workers they hit.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I use infsetors rather a lot. i think they're great lately. but fragile as hell; i might prefer some slght nerfs to its abilities as compensation for increased life.
... i use the unit a whole lot, but theres many dimension on how & when you use them, i feel like im still just scraping the surface. this is great... you can put them on cliff and NP stuff that cant see you, burrow-move to flank or harass (with or without roach or muta support).. with a full energy intstor, use two fungals or one fungal and 3 infested terrans, before Neural-parasiting something.
when you have the energy upgrade, 150 gas feels VERY worth it for what can be done with it.

i usualy find one Fungal o be more effective use of energy; make some IT's to finsh hem off. but it depends on the situation i guess. something to hink about is how long you need to wait before casting the 2:nd Fungal o get high enough total damage for the kill (im assuming damge doesnt stack but taht a re-cast will onyl reset the timer)

Look at this. This looks like cooper league. But its cool nonetheless

I really really hate infestors. Hell I hate zergs. Worst race. But the video is cool.

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I feel there is a lot of evolution with the infested terran that may come and maybe we may see them in pro games soon :)

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
So, tonight I played against an opponent in ZvZ... who went mass infestors. Seriously, it was a massive problem when you have 12 of them running around.
I'll say this, if you play someone who is good with them, the only way to counter them is to go infestor or brood lord to counter them. I'm surprised and hope that you all see a game with this guy's insane usage of them.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Would Broodlord work? Don't they have the same range?
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I've actually always been a Zerg player from SC1 to now, but I have been hesitant to use infestors because they are so new to me. I think this is an example of how zerg may not prove to be as un-innovative as everyone deems them. It just takes time to try out completely new units when the old-fashioned mass, tech switch and destroy still somewhat works. Whereas, the new units for Terran and Protoss are still familiar in some way due to their similar roles to old units. That is not to say they are boring or redundant, but they still have a certain familiarity that the Infestor does not share with the Defilier or the Queen in my opinion.
But I really want to start using them and hopefully I'll figure out how to use them effectively against specific units and when they're needed. They seem like a good support unit, and I disagree that they're comparable to queens from SC1. After 10 years of professional play, queens from SC1 were still very rarely used. I think Infestors will be used much more often in SC2 and will find a subtle, yet significant role in multiplayer.

I demand replay. That sounds wicked cool.

I remember that game. Was it the one you livecasted???

It was a disaster of a game. Definitely led to us losing in a 2v2 plat game... It was incredible. I'd never seen them used like that. Since the ability also deals damage over time and it appears that they stack - 4-5 casts can kill a group of clumped mutas...

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Infestors are fun to play with, but not super practical unless you're into casting units.
They're always a laugh though in a casual game, when you pick up an SCV and five minutes later your terran opponent is fighting a mixture of lings, hydras, and tanks.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
They get focus fired easily and immediately most of the time. This game has a ton of rapid fire ranged units and one right click stops Infestors in their tracks. That's the only problem I have with them.
I wouldn't have a problem with increasing their armor, but I guess they are effective in masses if Fungal stacks.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Trust me Asfast, watch the replay.. I will admit that this is significantly stronger in ZvZ than other matchups.
I have posted it here.

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I agree with Aldrius, they die so easily it's very difficult to use them effectively. Fungal Growth also seems to have a very small area of effect, though it is quite a useful spell. Neural Parasite basically makes the Infestor the perfect counter to Thors and Ultra (though like I said they get killed so easily by support units).
I haven't had a whole lot of success with Infested Terrans yet. At best they seem like emergency AA and at worst they seem like a novelty. I suppose you could burrow move your infestors into the enemy base and hatch infested terrans in their mineral line, but with that amount of effort / resources you could just overlord drop / nydus some zerglings.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Infestors are ok vs terran. But just NP and FG.
Spawn Infested Marine is still an almost useless spell.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
i struggled a bit in ZvZ a while back, but lately iv been quite dedicated to infestor tech - along with roaches rather than ling / hydra
i just beat someone whos #15th in plat with it ... infestors burrow-moving to the mineral lines is some dangerous shit! throwing down one IT and one fungal growth is as effective as any storm-drop ever was!
here's the replay

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
they just cost way too much gas, and since this game is gas limited they don't really live up to their true potential.
you can't really do much with 1 infestor, 150 gas is a lot, especially for zerg. I'd rather make 3 hydras or 6 roaches instead of 1 infestor..
but they shine when protoss goes colossi ;)

Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
This and the Raven I don't like. Sure, they have advantages, but I don't want to deal with that much. I like pressing on the map to tell my guys where to go, then sit back and watch.

Wat? Has anyone tested this? I'd be surprised if that's the case but it would be pretty crazy if they stacked. I'd love some confirmation : )
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
They do not "stack" in terms of damage, but they can reset the duration by recasting, which ensures that you can't move. Think about the scenario we were faced with.
Infestors in mass is a scary as hell thing, especially as a zerg player. It's an exponential situation as every infestor you get increases the energy per second gained by the mob. Fungal growth is the cornerstone of it. Watch the replay posted above in my previous post to understand fully.
10+ infestors were seriously able to lock down double 2 base zerg.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Fungal Growth doesn't stack, but each cast refreshes it.
My favourite use for Infestors is still Neural Parasite :]. That thing is fantastic against Thors.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Mass any caster an they Will unleash hell. Whats so special about the infestor? Cast 12 psistorms, 12 defennse drones, 12 seeker missiles, 12 forcé fields. Any of those will turn into a Mess your enemys Army. You talk like the infestor has infinite energy or somehing.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
I think the issue that I'm hit with is not the fact that the infestor is largely a pain in the right hands... it is moreso the fact that it's quite difficult and costly for zerg to counter such methods by means of their equalizing "massive macro" mentality.
If you look at a terran, EMP is a counter that can utilize skill to handle casters. In Protoss to their own extreme feedback can easily make a very large dent in it.
As Zerg when facing this, you have two options that don't involve major sacrifices of units (understand, this example is against a person who is very skilled in infestor play, not anyone) You can try to fungal growth them back, or attempt to go brood lords. That's moreso probably where my mindthought is.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
i dont view infestors as a "problem" in ZvZ ... they just implore you to be a bit more careful about clustering your units, also as you say, you can use infestors back at him; even lesser units of gas worth might do the trick as even a few of them might make it harder for him to use his infestors in favourable ways.
if it was ever considerd a serious problem for ZvZ, i think the easiest fix would be to disallow Fungal to work on burrowed units, lending burrowed roaches some leeway...
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
As games go past the 15-20 minute mark, using infestors become more imperative. Nothing like neural parasiting the enemy's immortals and colossus.
-
Re: I actually really like the Infestor...
Hrm.... burrowed roaches, good idea, I didn't consider that as an option. Thank you.
