tactical drops to harass production / economy and map movement to secure more resources than your enemy.
if you get more vikings than your opponent you can also make use of Banshees. but Thors counter that quite nicely once numbers grow so dont go overboard with it.
I've noticed that if you can get the early dropship with a few tanks you can easily gain a foot hold on the enemy base and force him to GG.
3 tanks and a couple marine/marauders does the trick very well actually. TvT is pretty much Tanks-v-Tanks and like OP said whoever attacks first loses. By dropping in his base and gainning a foothold; you force him to attack you.
Also if that doesn't work if you can't get that to work. I've found that whoever has the superior air force usually wins. Just keep pumping vikings and tanks to dig up. Marines for mineral dump. If he decides EVER to stop making vikings to counter yours. You can just start making BC's and banshees to rape his ground force. TvT lategame is all about air superiority.
Here is a replay of me playing TvT just now:
I'm plat ~10ish. People keep going above me when I'm offline :<

It didn't quite go the way I planned as he sieged me first. So I left a siege tank as well as a skeleton crew at base to defend while I destroy his base. Also you can see my bad situational awareness; getting my viking killed and my marine killing the other marine at the xel'naga watch tower lol.
I wonder if your backdoor tank trick could work against the other races.
Fast reapers. work almost always expect if opponent dosen't scout's it
It's not very effective against zerg or protoss because zealots/lings are melee which really screw tanks up. You could ofcouse ball around your tank but its not as effective as vTerran because only counters Terran have against tanks is other tanks or banshee.
While this is true; i don't believe you should dedicate to going reaper. Just open with 1 reaper or two.
Also here's another TvT:

He beat me economically but he didn't utilize his resources properly or it just may have been the harrass he did on me near the end of the game. He never got a tank which costed him the game as you guys will see.
Fast reapers doesn't 'always' work i've found, against certain players (even those who don't scout) they tend to have alot of marines in their base and are able to react quickly to the reapers, or just have 1 maurder.
However against any terran trying a tech build (thors, banshies) it does work really well.
Most TvT breaks down to who can have air superiority, I once had a game where it was a 2v2 T mirror match and 3 of the 4 went almost identical air builds. The one that had more air won. at the moment, not getting air at some point in TvT (if your opponent goes it) almost means a loss.
I'm generally on the Offense when im T, in a TvT match its about having the tanks, if he is going air, just turret up your base and go with a large amount of marine, setup your tanks outside his base and just try to start a fight, kite with maras/marines and your tanks will even the field even if they have medivacs.
imo mirrors work in your favor if you upgrade as well. i dont have problems with banshee as scans and marines can handle them and turrets can hold your base, he spends alot to tech to that so you can win the ground war easy, esp if he only has 1 or 2 out when you start to attack him.
I feel like I get behind a bit when I devote resources and micro time to a more than two-reaper early harass.
Its great against a Terran wall in, or an early Protoss zealot-only build but it doesn't work quite as good with Zerg once enemy has a queen or batch of lings. Hellions seem to work better here.
Still, I sometimes would rather devote resources and focus in getting my Factory and Starport tech up than going for an early, early harass.
This simple little trick here works..
Get your 4-5 tanks and a few bunkers filled with marines for defense (keep sweeping his base if u see air units make turrets). Then just mass the fuck out of Thor's (with upgrades)
when u got 6-7 thors (will handle air and ground) go air drop everything into the back of his base...if he has thors/tanks use the MM cannons on em quick and its basically GG if u execute it properly
Here is a shoutcast I did that I think is a pretty decent example of TvT early - mid game counters, units and the like. Might give you a decent idea of what to do, as both our builds are great I just managed to out-counter and scout him.
