I sure need this too. A lot will be needing it. I don't care if it requires the client to log-in to battle.net before the lan mode can be accessed, but having the LAN is a must, IMO.
Agreed. If the executives wish tighter control on the playerbase as well as stronger security for eventual community marketplace items by requiring internet logins, fine by me. But not having a low latency option from the same household is just mind-blowing.
I've already tested two accounts from the same household with Battle.net 2.0, and the results are that EVERY user's packets get routed all the way out to the ISP and all the way back -- there is no intelligent peer-to-peer system going on here. Want to play an eight player local matchup? Be sure to have a strong internet, as you'll have degradation for every player, and an increasingly larger ping regardless.
I think they should make a LAN version that can only be used while you are still online and logged into battle net.
But i can understand that if someone cracks this then the sales will drop a lot for blizzard since piracy will be the number one choice for every casual player that wants to play a few games with friends.
If i have to concider this from blizzards side too, then the benefits from having multiplayer on battle net 2.0 only is so big compared to allowing any form of LAN.
Even if they miss out on some customers, they will probably lose hundreds of thousands more if the lan version got cracked and available for download.
And i mean lets face it, most people that doesnt even have internet would not buy the game even if it had LAN, they would just download it. Since LAN goes hand in hand with piracy. We all know offline mode will be cracked instantly.
Firstly, Hi everyone! Quester Pro here!
I reckon we really need to see what Blizzard is doing and for what reason(s) before we judge them!
We can't go around blaming them for something that pirates forced them into!
Alterran is right about the crack- where there's a will, THERES A WAY! And frankly, they're only getting better at cracking- faster than anyone's stopping it.
I did sign the petition to bring LAN back- only because I belong to a large family of 10. and most of us all want to play SC2. does that mean 7 of us need to pay $60 US dollas to play against eachother? I'm a homeschooler- and the bulk of my friends are too- and we all have large families and we all want to play. I reckon if we buy 1 copy per family, Blizzard should let us put it on multiple computer and use LAN within our own household!
But hey- I already pre-ordered the SC2 Limited Collector's Edition- and i already knew they didn't have LAN support. But Blizzard is Blizzard, they've never let me down before, and I still support what they're standing for. I'm with them all the way! Go Blizzard!
On a side-note, Not only did they give us the best games in the world, one after the other, they always included their Legendary Map/World/Galaxy Editors! i mean, who else gives you that kind of power? - I know some games have map editors- but they're a drop in the ocean compared to Blizzard's Technology. WarCraft 3's World Editor was sooo powerfully customizable, we created games that had no relevense to warcraft itself! Things like, DotA, TD's (LTD was the best!), Footies, and good old Hero Arena!
IF anything, we should be greatful that they even bother making them user-friendly for us to use! - Blizzard doesn't have to share their Programms with us - That's their choice.
Also, I might add, I'm sure Blizzard has most likely, Obviously, spent a lot of time thinking this over- i mean, its not like, "How can we make more money?" They are standing up for what's right! Piracy is crime. Its stealing. and obviously a lot of people already know this- they simply just don't care is all. Well who's going to put a stop to it? Blizzard isn't crime-supporters are they? NO THEY"RE NOT!
Alright. Thanks for reading- I HOPE I DON"T DOUBLE POST! sorry if i do, Cheers,
The Quester Pro.
But if it come's to the point where progamers drop the game because of no lan. What is most important to Blizzard, a community like BW had or a game that will sell really well the first months and then be forgotten?
lol. i wonder if anyone is going to bother to read my long posts.... XD :P
I did ^^Quote:

Haha! Thanks! I appreciate that at least someone read one of my rediculously long posts.. XD
Im 130% sure SC2 will not be forgotten in a few months. If the pro gamers complain and stop playing, then blizzard will be forced to fix the problem to get the public back into the game. But i dont think this will happen, blizzard will for sure help arrange better connections for tournaments.
And there might still be updates with LAN options if blizzard notice it will be worth the risks.
Remember that there is nothing stopping blizzard from adding LAN support later.
Also consider its kiiiinda hard to forget a game that has 2 more expansions comming :D
offcourse ^^
The problem is and has been obvious long time now, we all know what no lan means, except blizzard for no apparent reason.
For all I care they can throw out the multiplayer all together.
I read somewhere that the way BNET2 works is no longer peer-to-peer UDP like the BNET1. In 1, BNET was just a way for you to find the IP of a playmate.
In 2, BNET acts more like a webserver.. and uses TCP, if I remember correctly. You send packets to it, and it sends your packets to your playmates / vice versa. Now, unless you can emulate BNET on one of the machines in your home, you wont get that LAN latency.
Thing is, I doubt it if BNET2 will stay unique for long. The very "pirates" Blizz wants to curb by taking out LAN will probably make emulators or something... Unless Blizzard codes in a security feature that can't be cracked before the next expansion is released.
No lan means no piracy and more profit from a game they took the time and money to develop?
Lan means SC2 is free for all with access to a torrent site ?
And that in turn equals a loss of millions of people not buying the game.
The apparent reason is protection from piracy.
Since the number one reason people casual gamers buy this game is to play with their friends, if they can arrange this for free, they will in most cases.
I think it would be awesome if they gave us LAN so i can play with my little brothers and all my friends that like starcraft but wont buy it for $60.
But im not dumb so i understand perfectly that blizzard wants to fight piracy of their games. This will also add up since allowing LAN for one game means the expansions etc will also be lost to piracy, and then we are suddenly talking about a lot more money than just SC2 Wings of liberty.
Its like no way they will reconsider to put LAN back into the game once you just consider the great loss of income they will lose from 2 expansions more.
@Alterran There's already developments being made on a Battle.net 2 emulator, and in this very beta there's custom A.I. and cracked launchers to let people play. The lack of LAN will not stop piracy, and you can bet Blizzard knows that. :p
If it works like that, i won't be surprised if latency is horrible. Are you sure? Using TCP and Client-Server for a game like this sounds as a very bad idea.
IIRC, Blizzard said that piracy wasn't the strongest reason for not having LAN. It's more about having all the player's statistics in BN.
Truth: They want/need money, we want to be able to play with our FF without the hassles of BNet2. There will be pirates nonetheless.
Here's what I think that could work for both parties:
LAN server client. For PCBangs, Cafes, home use.
What happens is clients can log-on to this LAN Server, and thus the LAN party. Clients are installed via this Server from blizzard, or from the DVD.
It can Log to BNet2, and BNet will authenticate a number of clients attached to this LAN server. This will allow Blizzard to package the product.
ex. 10x1 LAN Server means 10 clients can play simultaneously within the LAN network. Cost: 120 USD. 10 clients are free, but are LAN Server dependent.
Authentication works upon joining the LAN game, and no more during the game to avoid laggz.
After the game is finished, the LAN Server client will send data to Bnet2, and your own personal LAN Party records are stored there. Another one of those Authentication happens, update maplist, etc.
For People who don't have their own internet connection but would like to have a ladder account and play ladder with the rest of the world:
Game cards.
ex. 5 usd for 20 hour cards.
A) The user logs on using the terminal PC, which is connected to the LAN Server Client, with his game card. Access his account, play at his/her own pace.
B) Multi-user client. This client can allow access for different users using cards. Play anywhere where this client is installed. Like MMOs.
Just look through the macro thread. You'll drown in the sea of words. :pQuote:
Oh... I've seen the birth of negative suns, and the collapse of entire entropies, and even longer walls of text in this forums, so dont worry young one.
I loved the “Idra has a girlfriend” bit in the vid, but the lag was horrid. Its china, so it is kind of a worst case scenario, but still, to have lag spikes as bad as that is just wrong. :(
It's not asking much for a game to recognize when the computers are in a LAN. Nobody is asking for the game to be playable without logging into Battle.net, but don't make the freaking packets travel the internet if the computers are at a distance of 5 meters, conected with a 1Gbps LAN.
If MP fails because of lag, sales will drop, and they will lose more than if the game was pirated.
Hell, you cannot even log to another server, right? How does that leave international tournaments?
