Cinematics

Do you think there would be a cinematic space battle of epic proportions in SC2? It will be so cool to see a cinematic featuring the full splendor and might of the protoss and terran fleets and the full fury of the swarm battling it out.
I really hope they won't get cheap with sc2 cinematics, ans just make them ingame. I want actuall cgi, and not animations of Raynor walking on a ship, and talking how the mission went. There has been a recent trend off using ingame animation cinematics by a lot off game designers, which i don't like. I hope there will be atlest as many cgi cinematics as in broodwar if not twice so many.

Blizz stated that there will be fewer cinematics in SC2 than in SC1, but that they will be larger and more epic in scope, and have more to do with the story.

We know (from the teaser trailer) that there will be cinematics involving marines, mutalisks, a banshee in a terran city, and hydralisks. As for large space battles, I hope there is one, but I don't think it's quite as likely. Who knows though :)

I would really like to see a full-out ground battle involving terrans vs. any other race. We've seen in the SC:Ghost intro how marines would fight, but in that one the marines were losing without any heavy ground or air support. I wanna see some tanks ripping through aliens :D

Blizzard cinematics always raise the bar on how CG cinematics look like. I'm certain what we saw so far ( SC2 teaser ) will pale in comparison.

That being said, I'm looking forward to something like 20-30 minutes of CG in Starcraft II Wings of Liberty. Space battle? There's really no way to tell, it depends how it serves the plot and if they consider it needs to be done in CG, and not ingame.

What I'd like to see as a cinematic is indeed an epic battle, but one on the ground, where a free-for-all takes place between all the races, while air units swoop through the skies. Inside of all this, we follow the progress of the main hero characters as they tear and rip through countless enemy forces, only to find each other and engage in a fierce duel.

IMO an epic battle (specialy on ground) will be too much of a visual mess and it`s not worth the hard work. Whats the point of spending half of the game-development time in drawing 1000 hydralisks and marines, which in order to be caught at the same time on screen, must be pictured from a far distance. In an epic space battle the camera can fallow a single ship, but still - too much of a mess. The epic battles should be left to the in-game cinematics.
For the CGI : I would like to see a ghost coming in & out of cloak, sneeking in a terran base, killing marrines with one shot and setting up charges. ... or targeting a nuke from a distance. Then we see the Commander aboard an orbiting battlecruiser giving up the orders for the nuklear launch .... the alarm in the station goes on "...launch detected... evacuation procedure .... code 463...". The ghost again -> stops aiming with his rifle - there is no need for this any more- the nuke is falling from the skies. Bright light... Again on board the battlecruiser -A lieutenant approaches the commander "Sir, the platform`s defences have been eliminated" "Very well, lieutenant - begin full scale invasion" End of cinematic.
LOL I got a little carried away - sorry about that... I think you get the idea = )

Good point, but there can and should be alternate camera views, some distant ones to see the whole scene, and then several close-ups where only the nearest characters are seen, matter and are animated. And you don't need to draw something 1000 times, in CG you just multiply them once you have one model. Then you assign a crowd behaviour to the group, where each character will randomly choose one of a given set of things to do. The problem is the choreography and the immense amount of polygons ( among other things ) that the computers need to suffer while rendering the whole thing.

I hope they really meant less than in SC vainilla, because BW had as little as one damn cinematic per race, and the intro.

Yeah this.

If they end up making 1 cinematic per race I don't care how effing "epic" the whole 2 minutes of each cinematic are.

Anyway, to the TC - it's not that easy. You try making a full scale battle with spaceships and everything battling it out in Blizzard quality.

Final statement: With that said, if they were to make 1 giant epic cinematic I'd have them make the battle for the Temple at Artika.

Just as I said before on another thread,

I would like to see tarsonis destroyed by a massive Xel'naga space ship at the end of wings of liberty (Mike Liberty might show up :P)

Still the battle over temple Artika would be colosal, with the ending of several protoss wariors doing a facepalm XD

I would be careful about making such an assumption. They could very easily have been made specifically for the announcement video/opening cinematic.

i think there will just be 2 cgi cinematics for wings of liberty.

The first one zeratul vs kerigan in the cave, its 4 minutes long and im guessing that the flying mutualisk, and the shot hydralisk in the tychus trailer is included here. i think zeratul will be in trouble and then his protoss forces will come and help him.

the final cgi im guessing is terran (raynor) against terran (mengks) in a terran city.

as for the cgi,
i wanna see the viking transformation and firing its missiles.
I also wanna see a ghost climbing a colossus and setting up a bomb on it.
zealot or dark templar fighting swarms of zergling 300 style.
An epic sow ground battle with the terran vs toss/zerg.
and ofcourse an epic space battle.
