Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Hello my fellow forumers, happy hollidays.
Seems to me, as time passes by that SC2 does not have the "aw", "wow" events SC1 had.
Its just not that exciting seeing marines and marauders clash against roaches and zerglings as its marines and medics clash with lurkers with zerglings.
Seeing marines and marauders clash against zealots and sentries is not as exciting as watching siege tanks and vultures clash against zealots and dragoons.
Seeing great use of psi storm in SC1 to seeing psi storm in SC2 it seems almost insignificant.
Reaver vs Colossus and reaver and SC1 seem more exciting, even though I found the Colossus as one of the best units in SC2.
Is it me, or my perception or whatnot, or is SC2 just less exciting?
I've watched tournament commentaries and while fun, they are just not as exciting as watching SC1 tournaments, even minor SC1 tournaments.
I didn't want to write this earlier in the beta, since its a BETA, but I think that 2 months has passed now and with the huge videos, replays, strategies availability the strategies get turned in and out fast, so we can't compare the SC1 2 months beta test to SC2 2 months beta test.
Its like comparing more like 6-7 months of SC1 with the current SC2 2 months beta test, since we have such a huge media - the internet.
So what do you think? Is SC2 less exciting than SC1, and if so why is that you think?

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Maybe its just you, the tournaments i've watched have been massively exiting. Sounds like you just want to watch Pro SC, which is more fun to watch right now becasue its matured over so long and we are used to the stuff. The game isn't out yet and theres still polish to be done!
I only say Pro Sc because honestly watching amateurs play SC:BW is extremely boring - only when people know the game so well is it fun to watch.
So far its just fun to watch, I mean as a person that enjoys so many differnt Esports I see nothing wrong with the current state of Sc2. Theres a few gripes that could be adjusted to make it more crazy, but we also a ton of patching left even after the game comes out. Right now its awesome becasue its amazing to see how fast the game is evolving, every single week the builds change and people start playing in differnt styles - it reminds me of some of the older days of BW. And with good casting (day9) its hard not to get pumped everytime something comes on

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I think it does. Perhaps it even has more "exciting" moments.
-The game is very aggressive for now
-There are many "exciting units/abilities" that can do massive damage when used just right (banelings, HT, Collossi, nukes, EMP, hellions). Of course some of these were already in SC:BW, and there are some missing (reaver, lurker), but these units do their job
One reason I don't enjoy streams as much is that sooooo many comentators have no idea what they're talking about. There are a couple, but sadly those commentators also have some traits that I dislike a lot.
To be fair, the game is so experimental for now that often times you really don't know exactly why each player is doing what he does, which makes commentating much harder. At least Day9 and Rise are trying to understand all this stuff!
Other commentators are like "Oh look! He's moving out!! It's amazing!"
And my reaction is usually: "Yes thanks, I'm not blind" ==> mute
I wish a a player like Jinro auto-commentated some of his games. He's very "game-oriented" when he talks, and is clear and synthetic. That's the kind of guy I'd like to hear more from.

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I love sc2 way more and I think everyone who keep criticizing it as a failed project is kind of ridiculous. I believe sc2 needs some help in some areas but I could never go back!
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
THIS... IS...BETAAAAAAAAAAA
But yeah, this is beta. SC1 wasn't as exciting to watch until later on.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I'll tell you that it's alot more fun to play. SC1 is a no-go for me at this point.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I'd say its more exciting for two reasons. One, its shiny and new. Anything can happen as everyone gets used to the new stuff. Secondly, I bash SC2 for lack of creativity in certain areas, but overall SC2 has a lot of options... at least for Terran >_<
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I'm not in the beta and haven't played SC2 yet so I really can't compare them but you have to remember the first Starcraft didn't start out the perfect game it is now. It took them many years of patches and balancing to get it how it is.
You shouldn't expect SC2 to be exactly like SC1 because it's a different game and it is brand new. I think another main reason why people say SC1 is more memorable or has better gameplay is because of the nostalgia factor and all the memories you have with it. You just don't have those with SC2 yet.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I feel that SC2 is still too shiny and new for me to be able to say impartially whether or not I find the games more exciting to watch than BW :p. Still need more time for me :p.
That said, I do think it's very fun to play and to watch :). It has to be E-sports material, and time will tell if the metagame will evolve to be as refined as BW's. And then of course, we still have TWO expansions which are going to shake up multiplayer! It's going to take a while, I believe :p.

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I've seen plenty of exciting games dude... I watch HD and Husky starcraft on youtube, there's so many nail biting matches. I've seen matches where the game would turn around so unexpectedly, due to players going eye for an eye on each others base.

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I have not played yet, but even in this short time I have seen some amazing games. Builds and moves that immediately make me want to start playing. Much of this may just be the newness of it all, but I'd say SC2 is keeping right up there with the original.....which is saying a lot seeing as the original took some years to get to where it is.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
hard to tell at this stage..a lot of the crazy and amazing things in starcraft happened when they were discovered by freaks and pro gamers years after its release
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
i think that sc1 is not as exciting if its TvT because its a turtle race and then they push out but if it is PvT its more exciting because the protoss player will raid first and the terran player will attempt to fight back. so i think that sc2 is more exciting because there are more units and new abilities.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Reavers are way better than colossi.
I think the game still needs to evolve for awhile til it gets to the SC1 level.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
deadlyhazard i agree 100% on both things

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
As a spectator sport, SC1 is still fantastic to watch. The pro scene is awesome, and each match can be very entertaining. If I were to actually go back and play SC1 though, I wouldn't be able to. It's just too dated, and the macro involved just to fight with the interface defeats the point of playing. It's just not interesting when you've played SC2 and know how much better the game feels compared to the manual labour of SC1.
I find SC2 more exciting at this point simply because of beta. Strategies aren't all down, so you can still get away with some crazy strats. Granted it feels like there is 'less' since it's still only beta stage and there's a lot of missing stuff (intentional or not? who knows) it's still very fun.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
sc1 is out dated and its been going on for like 10 or 11 years or more and now the beta is out for sc2 and it is going to carry the torch for sc1 for even longer maybe. so R.I.P starcraft 1

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Yes.
I just finished an awesome ZvP vs an opponent who was slightly favored to me.
The battle see-sawed dramatically before I finally finished off his expansions while simultaneously barely holding off a carrier/void ray push... with only mutalisks. He used lots of sentries, but had to stop making dark templar (a couple of overseers took care of that). He also had impressive base defenses; I managed to take out his first nexus but could never finish off that pesky stargate. (And, of course, he kept making sentries and using Guardian Shield against my mutas.)

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Maybe the thing is: If we had SC1 with the same engine that SC2 has, would you still be saying the same???? All that SC2 love seem a little bit out of place, until we see both games in the same "conditions": Graphics, pathing, and AI, things that were improved, not changed. Automining and amazing patting can turn the comparison unfair, since SC1 didn't have those, and it was improved for the 2nd game.
Units, buildings, tech trees, damage system and maps should be the same as the original
Time will tell. I really want to play that...
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
SC2 definitely has the same excitement. I just experienced a Thor rush on me for the first time and I gotta say that if I was watching as a spectator I would definitely be wow'ed by that Lol.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Watching SCBW is never too exciting now that SC2 has come. I can't put my finger on it, but it seems more awesome.
SCBW is slow paced, with a few tricks here and there, but SC2? Oh man, when that mountain finally gets out of the way, damn.
SC2 has so much potential, I believe.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Whatever problems I might have with SC2, this much is clear: SC2 easily shows the potential to be a better SC than SC ever was.
It's more entertaining to watch and to play.

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
The only thing that bothers me, as I've said before, is the lack of multi-front strategy. Huge armies clashing is cool and all, but if I want to see single behemoth armies beat the crap out of each other I'll go and play TFT. SC should be all about doing multiple offensives at the same time, because of drop capabilities and stuff. And so far, I've seen mostly huge armies clash. But perhaps this will change over time, because the basic elements for multi-front battles are still there. Although, like I said, I think near-unlimited unit selection leads to an unconscious tendency towards having a single army, even though everyone says it doesn't. Let's hope the pro's will look beyond this mechanic.

Thats weird. Thats exactly how I don't play. I love dropping DTs behind enemy lines and using Warp ins. I'm not a fan of huge armies until I hit Tier 3 when I really need to end the game.

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
the only reason players dont do multifront battles is because they have to by micro gods not just micro wizards but gods
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
I'm not too sure.
While there are some exciting stuff in SC2 and a lot of potential its just not at the standard SC1 has.
And I'm mostly talking about the little things like M&M&M vs roach&hydralisk in comparisment to M&M vs zerglings&lurkers.
I don't know, but I think i miss the positioning strategy that was in SC1. Where you place lurkers and zerglings, where you place M&M, where and how you place reavers and high templars and so on...
I like so much the fact that one zealot placed upfront or backwards can make a difference vs SC2 where 1 zealot can't make any kind of difference.
I have also yet to see dark templar rushes, thor play, amazing unit micro and so on...
I don't know if any of you have watched the clips from SC1 with great micro moves where for example 4-5 marines with 2 medics can kill off 30 zerglins with 5-6 lurkers with great micro, it does not seem possible in SC2.
And while SC2 is fun and cool, the more time it passes the less I feel it will have such amazing and exciting moves.

I think you are trying to see starcraft moves in starcraft II, which is why you aren't being satisfied. You have unrealistic expectations and have clearly watched very little sc2 due to those unmet unrealistic expectations.
I've been dark templar rushed, and I have friends who have been DT rushed; so it happens.
I know why its exciting watching sc, but you can't compare a game that has been around 10 years to a game in its beta phase. The mechanics of the game are much more fun to play with, but the gameplay is in a constant flux and will be for quite some time.

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
Sc2 is more fun, both to play and to watch. I still have fun playing SC1 against vent buddies, but I'm sure I'll never go back when I'm able to play against them on SC2. That goes without saying that I'll definitely have more fun playing SC2 against strangers.
I'll miss the 12 unit selection cap, because that feels like true Starcraft, but everything else is an upgrade in my eyes.
-
Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
sc2 feels much more aggressive and fast-paced. units are often all over the map, and every race (especially terran) has received massive upgrades to mobility. the entire experience, imo, is just a lot more fluid.
sure there are things to iron out still, but sc2 def has potential.

Re: Does SC2 have the exciting play SC1 has?
All i have to say is: Never been so hooked on a beta before! ^^
