Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
Hello,
I am a recently changed terran nplayer and I love the concept of the viking. A powerfull replacement to the goliath as it can attack both air and ground and has the mobility of the wraith. There are several problems that i have with the unit though and was wondering if some shared my views.
I think that it has too weak of an armor system. It doesn't even start out with +1 to armor. This makes the unit incredibly easy to kill. I see them fall quickly in battle. I also think that there G2G attack needs some additional firepower.
What are your thoughts on this unit?
Re: Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
I use this unit mostly for harassment since its a reactor unit its easy and quick to get a group of them and there ability to go from ground to air makes it easy for em to escape slower units.
Re: Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
Its pretty okay where its at. Remember, you can easily use them with reactors and have a large fleet of them. There ground mode easily lets them land in SCV work lines as well, letting them to rip your enemy's economy to shreds.
Re: Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
Versatility and mobility is really what makes the Viking good.
Vikings shine against Protoss who go for Colossi, because they do so much damage against them. The Viking's Air-to-Air attack is also a whopping 9 range, which can make it difficult for the Protoss to keep his Colossi safe from being harassed to death by Vikings.
In Mech mode, they definitely pack enough of a punch to give them a good deal of presence in a ground war (even though producing them solely for that purpose is not cost-effective).
Re: Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
If you want ground pounders, use marauders. Vikings are a lot better at harassment and at mobile defense (for when you need ground forces there, right now!
Re: Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
A solid Viking army is incredibly easy to muster, and can easily put an end to a game if your opponent can't stop it/counter it within seconds of you landing in his base.
If they were any stronger, they'd have to be taken off Reactor, that's for sure.
Re: Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
There's no clearly defined concept for good and bad in the game. Instead, it takes units and give them advantages and disadvantages. And like many other units Vikings share this.
The viking is a harasser like the mutalisk, but as most units, it can still reach critical mass. Else, if faced against high damage units like the thor or hydras. Vikings will hold for less than a few seconds.
Re: Viking - What makes this unit good // bad?
I saw a TvZ game, where it was practiacally won by 2 early vikings capturing a high ground above natural exp, effectively killing its resourse line while and hunting down overlords.
It was espeacially effective due to the fact that in SC2 units can't shoot up the higher ground with no vision, which zerg just couldn't get bcasue the vkings would convert and kill the overlord at once.
That's rather cool mix of abilities.

Its not meant to be the first unit in battle, its supposed to be support and harass unit.

What makes it a good unit? Its range and abblity to land
What makes it a bad unit? Its too expensive(fixed already)
