"Coaching" for Noobs..?
hey everyone.
first of all, probably something like this exists already, then forgive me - but if not, it could be an good idea.
im a noob in starcraft.
seriously, i play it since ~7 years but all i play is UMS and fastest maps, and this sucks.
tried some times to play "real" starcraft, but i simply fail very hard every time.
there are much good players around this community, and also i think there are some of my kind, playing the game, loving the game - but just being a noob.
so i wonder if it would be possible that some of the "pro´s" would find some time, to make something like an coaching project.
thought it could work like this...
1. theoretical stuff goes into a forum, most important things, buildorders, how to build your base with sense, what are the most played tactics and how to counter them.
the pro´s will teach serval apprentices...
2. teaching "counters" to the apprentice for different builds to them and trying to improve them while they play these counters against the pro that uses the strat the counter is for.
3. pro´s going into ventrilo(or whatever) with the apprentice who will playing against another apprentices thats also coached by a pro.
all these games could be live streamed, recorded and commented...
its for SC:BW...
would teach new players the game, improve the skills possible find some talents for the future.
also while many people are waiting for betakeys and the final release of SC2, this could be a good thing to use the nonused time.
and sc:bw is nearly the same as sc2, so the players would actually learn for sc2 already..
what do you guys think..? would such a project be possible?
kind regards, howligH - and sorry, i know my english sucks :X
Edit:
Selfhosted Voice-Servers Available:
Ventrilo - 8 Slots (limited due public server version)
Teamspeak3 - Unlimited Slots
Mumble - Unlimited Slots
List of Pro-Teachers:
The_Blade
Skyze (if he gets an sc2 beta key, he teaches both (?))
Hammy
List of Apprentices
howligH
Gritten (?)
KillaKhan
is there any possibility to spread this "project" like a news or something? could grow to a big thing i think.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
This is actually a really good idea.
I have to admit, I'm fairly n00bish myself. Most of my gaming experience was 8 or 9 years ago getting ripped apart in battlenet so I gave up there and moved on to playing alongside my wife in AI games. Lately it's been with my 10 year old daughter on money maps versus a couple of AI's and we usually get wiped lol.
There's a few people here that are MORE than happy to lend some assistance for newbs. I've had people like TheBlade, Tam, and Ernesto watching my games via livestream, and giving me ingame feedback through chat. In fact, Ernesto was SO intent on helping improve my game, we spent about an hour one night attempting to get a Vent server working so he could yell at me through voice what to do and when.
Watching replays and learning from mistakes is a great way to learn. But to have someone actually invest time into you and say do this, do this, you're forgetting to macro, micro that, can't you see that in their base, you need to build x to counter REALLY helps. My game has improved SIGNIFICANTLY in a matter of 3 or 4 days.
We have an awesome community here.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
nice to hear that you like this idea.
also for things like an ventrilo server or something like that i would be able to use my root server, hosting this stuff is no problem.
hope there are more people liking this, and probably we could start such a project.
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
I shall teach you well...
Lets just get ventrilo and livestream or something.
I'm up to coach anyone at the time... have not played beta yet but if you look closely enough at my sig, you can see the alarming amount of replays I have witnessed.
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
cool.
lets run this thread for a day or two, and have a look how many people would join this thing.
to the ventrilo thingy..
i just found out that ventrilo has 2 versions of its server..
one public, limited to 8 slots.
one paid, unlimited slots.
im not sure if we would need more than 8 slots at all, but if, this could be a problem. (probably livestream viewers could use it to talk whatever..)
we also could use an Teamspeak3 or Mumble voice server instead, they even have better quality and less delay than ventrilo and are not limited on slots.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
I'm up for it. I'm mostly a zerg player, and I'm not bad. I know the basics.
I can't play very well on Battlenet. I have an amazing first game defense strat, but nothing past that.
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
so you would also be an apprentice, right?
i think i edit that into the firstpost, collecting "pro´s" and apprentices.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
if someone gets me a key I could teach them.. I am experienced with sponsered teams in SC/War3, currently the captain of a team that had some of the best players out of North America for SC/War3, and will soon be atop the SC2 world by release.

Starcraft Broodwar, not SC2 Beta.
if you meant a SC:BW Key, well.. its not that much like 2€ in germany. you should be able to find some for not much money..
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
I actually value his experience, and that's what he meant. Not that he wants to coach SC BW alone, but evolve the experience into StarCraft 2.

give me a SC2 beta key and ill teach anyone in either game.
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
well sure, i mean "upgrading" this thing to SC2 Beta or the final game after its release is a thing thats possible, id like that.
but for now, i for myself have no beta key, and i wanna focus on SC:BW for now, until i got an beta key, to learn the game, learn the basics and stuff.
so i can take this as a "as soon as you get a SC2 beta key, youre in to teach for BW & SC2"?

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
gritten: that wasnt just ernestro that wanted to pop on a mic and start yelling! :P lol
although that one time u looked at the chat and almost followed everything we said, made us proud :P heh rather than us yelling WHERES THE WARP GATE BAHHHH! heh
as for coaching for sc:bw, im afraid i wouldnt be up to snuff in that area, havent played brood wars in the longest time, probably coming onto 7 years now.
plus i have been playing the sc2 beta due to my neighbours extreme luck at getting a key and letting me play it, and the macro and micro elements of sc2 are vastly different from BW. even the hot keys are different (hence i made a thread listing them for new players to memorize, still not done tho)
the only thing sc:bw can teach yah how to do is increase your apm's and your microing skills which can transition. the hot keys tho that you will be using in bw to make urself faster are different in sc2, and some of the macro mechanics have not transitiioned as of yet (the F1 keys are a glaring ommission so far that you'll find very useful in sc1)
but overall it is still also the same in the end. you are still trying to build up a base, have minimum 16 units mining, 24 maximum (except pathing is better in sc2, in sc1 u have to manually assign the drones to different mineral patches so they do not line up and make sure no more than 3 units per mineral patch). still gotta build gas geyers, but of course this is diff in sc2 due to there being 2 of em, and giving less gas, and them running out.
so what i would suggest doing if you are practicing in brood wars, try to get used to the idea of using hotkeys. get used to macroing your base while managing attacks. get used to setting waypoints and various other things while managing your base. also, get used to scouting! and know what key things must be going on when scouting.
also you gotta know when to expand. all of this can be sharpened and improved in BW, other than that, the rest needs to be added on in sc2
also, to further this topic, in my topic of hotkeys im making i referrenced a link to a website that has basically EVERYTHING you need to know about how to be a good player in sc1. learn that stuff, you should be on your way.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
thanks for the information, im heading to that site and trying to learn that stuff :)
but still, if anyones interested - just post here!
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
I wouldn't mind "coaching", not that I think I'm any good, but I've got a decent rank in beta and I play quite a bit since I was lucky enough to sumble upon a key. Back in BW I was a stable C- lately, which aint too fancy ;)
I'm in a GMT+1 time zone though, so bare that in mind when setting up a schedule^^
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
added you hammy as a coach. hope the lists fill up in the next days.
just wanna add this, thanks again tam for that site, helped me already a lot getting into the strategic stuff. im going to add it to the first post also, so if this thing is running, that site can be used to cover the basic stuff of information.
but thats also a small problem, its just basics but things that are real important are missing, and thats what why i think such a coaching thing would be great.
things like, how to build your base effective and good to defend, how and what things to focus on with the highest priority etc...
someone sitting behind you, telling you to watch for your drones or stuff is just the best way to learn something like this.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
now just finished the hotkeys thread i was making, check it out :)

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
I'd be interested in taking some coaching. I recently picked the game back up, but I wasn't amazing before or now. I don't completely suck, but I'd like to get better.
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
I frequently teach people what not to do on my LiveStream :D

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
Hello guys,
I'm new to SClegacy but this project of yours sounds nice. I'm trying to get back into SC:BW for 2 weeks now but since I lost my copy I had to play vs the AI instead of other people. Which isn't that good for learning the game. So I'd be interested in being an apprentice once I get a copy of the game. Keep in mind I'm also from a GMT+1 timezone though.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
Once I get into the beta (assuming I do, or if not, when I get SC2) I'll gladly be coached by whoever is willing to help me :)

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
Watch Day[9]'s stream on Teamliquid
He seems to be only on in the evenings (9:00 / 10:00 EST) for a few hours but he is extremely helpfull to watch.
The videos consist of him critiquing his own replays of games experimenting with different strategies and builds. Very good watch for pros and noobs alike, give him a try.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
Hi i have a beta account and im pretty noob looking for someone to coach me in some 2v2s I play terran
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
Ive been hitting up the ladder with toss, so far so good Ive read a lot and im doing fairlyw ell and i wouldnt have a problem talking to people, however im only on really late at night i wouldnt call myself a pro and i would love the opportunity o better myself as a player just as much as anyone else :)
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
For all of you who think he's talking about coaching in beta... he's not. He's talking about coaching in SC1.
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
well actually its both now, because i got beta access since last wave - only problem is, im on the EU beta, so that has to be seperated also.
but if this project would work, what doesnt looks like atm, it would be built up for both games anyways.
-
Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
If you want to REALLY get better, then frequently study up on
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/Main_Page
to get an idea on all units and their counters.
But most of all, play against other people on iCCup. Playing ranked ladder games can be far more valuable than you can imagine, and just work hard on improving your general sense of the game.

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
I would definitely be interested in something like this. First time I ever played starcraft was last week though so it'd definitely be a project. Find the game endlessly interesting

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
Im not saying im great or anything but if anyone wants to talk about stuff, or play some friendly games i'll be glad to help - Island.snake (NA server)

Re: "Coaching" for Noobs..?
Whenever I play the original Starcraft, I'm drawn in for a while but I shortly become frustrated with the outdated UI and the fact that 99% of the people playing it know all of the strategies and build orders for every specific map and matchup, and I only have vague ideas.
That's why I can't wait for SCII, with a new-age UI and a playerbase with roughly the same amount of experience as me.
