Ahhh...it was only last year that I upgraded my last socket 939...*sniff* I loved that machine. The 939 was a great socket.
I would definitely recommend going for a full upgrade. While 939 is still a nice socket, it's several years too old. You'd still be using SDDRAM, if I'm not mistaken, as opposed to DDR2 or DDR3. Those two ram upgrades can make a world of difference.
And yeah, the 5870 is the preferred card, but the 5850 is not one to sneeze at either. Later you can crossfire a second one in and get some niiiice performance increase. If you can't swing for the 5870, get the 5850. If you can't swing for the 5850, go for the 5770. Two of those in crossfire mode are almost as good as a 5870, but you have to deal with the occassional game that doesn't do so good with crossfire/SLI rigs.
Well after downloading the beta client and checking the graphics options I'm very glad I decided to build a new system. My current PC has Starcraft 2 recommending everything at medium and some graphical tweaks turned off. I ended up doing this:
i7 860 quad core 2.8 GHz
8 gigs ddr3 1600 ram
Radeon 5870 1gig ram GPU
ASUS SABERTOOTH 55i LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
Window 7 64-bit home premium
I didn't get a sound card or gaming NIC yet. For the sound card, it's really lost on me at the moment, I always use headphones, and I'm not sold on the gaming NICs yet. I'm going to look around before I commit. I have to say I'm really pleased to be getting a PC without a truckload of bloatware. My first custom computer, I have a feeling I'll never go back.
EDIT: So someone was poking their nose in the wrong forum but wanted to know what the minimum requirements would be to run the game at ULTRA setting. Any of you computer geniuses care to take a stab at that? What is good enough without being overkill?
Thread is now sticky.
@sinswage for the previous thread xD Whats wrong with your i7 and the stock speeds are like 2.4 or something. So I do have it semi heavily over clocked on air so my temps get pretty hot >.<
And everything on my system was recommended at ultra and runs like a charm! Cheers to beta!
Well I don't have it in hand so I'm not having any problems since I don't even have the PC yet :P I was just saying the i7 was listed as an issue by blizzard. They said that the chip causes the game to run slowly sometimes.
There's a thread in the Beta forums where several people have posted their boxes. My GeForce GTS 250 plays SC2 just fine at 1920x1200. I can't say that's the minimum, however, but a GTS 250 is pretty cheap (~$130). The ATI performance equivalent is the 5750, which can be found for ~$150.Quote:

Now, I can't say how much SC2 is stressing my system. But I don't think I've heard the fan kick into high gear the way it does when I'm playing an FPS. So something less may well be in order.
Ooh thats a little scary. xD I'm glad mines running fine right now and without problems. Although that doesn't mean they won't arise in the future xD
So I have a question, I plan on getting the following computah:
Intel i7 920 2.66 Ghz
2 gb x2 DDR3 1060
GTX 275 video card 893 mb
Would that run SC2 at max settings ? And also, do you have any thoughts upon those parts ? any ones cheaper and better ?
GTX275 is a no go, anyway anything that is now better than GTX260 is not worth buying even including the card itself.
Until nVidia won't release the new 4xx cards and lower the prices of 2xx cards it a no go for Geforce.
Instead of that GTX260 buy yourself a HD 5850 price almost same and the ATI card is better
Thank you ! Could you please be more specific ? I am quite stupid at this PC hardware stuff. All I know to take into consideration when speaking about v-cards is the memory (more is better).
You are saying the current generation of nVidia cards is old (the GTX gen) and compares poorly to ATI cards ? By what standards ?
Also, if I buy an ATI, will that be compatible with an Intel processor and other shenanigans ?
Please, I wanna learn to make proper purchases in the future :3
There is no problem with using Intel with ATI cards or AMD with nVidia.
The problem with the GTX2xx series is that those are overpriced and those are build in the older techonology.
Just look at the review of the HD 5850 which I recommended you instead of that GTX275

At the moment one of the major suffering about the nVidia cards, is that they don't support DirectX 11 - which isn't exactly future proof.
I prefer nVidia cards since I understand the hardware specs better. (As in: "X amount of hardware spec, gives me Y amount of performance when taking in reguard to the previous one I had")
Felt like posting this if anyone wanted a reference.
StarCraft 2 Beta hardware performance.
I run...
i7 920 @ 2.67 GHZ
6GB 1600 MHZ DDR3 RAM
ASUS P6T- SE MOTHERBOARD
ATI RADEON 5770 1GB (HIS BRAND)
Running Fraps in the background, my FPS is capped at 80 in SC2@
SC2 Beta Settings
1650X1050 Resolution
ULTRA settings (MAX everything)
Note: Ultra textures require a 1GB Video card
FPS while recording is a decent 30-50, but video playback is at 60.
Feels like the FPS is capped at 80 or something (According to my FRAPS counter)
Game runs very stable, no problems ALT-Tabbing in/out.
Load time takes about 10 secs or less
If anyone wants to build a new computer just for SC2, you do NOT need a heavy machine.
You can probably do well with an AMD/Intel duo core (quad core is a waste to be honest)
4GB of ram
A nVidia 260GT 1gb / Radeon 5770 1gb calibre sort of card can run this on max NO problem.
There is no 260GT first of all, GTX260 that is and it doesn't have 1GB of memory but 896MB, on top of that you mentioned that ultra settings require 1GB of GPU memory, bullshit. Ultra settings use DX10 which is obviously only for DX10 cards.
I always laugh at those who think "oh i have a card with 1GB of memory, it's very powerful, while your card has only 512mb and it sux!"
I also laugh at ads when they only say how big is the memory.

Call me a nvidia fanboy but I just dislike ATi. There are other things to account in besides just performance. ATi is KNOWN for having driver issues most recently being the Gray Screen of Death. Personally I would stick with nvidia and go ahead with your purchase or wait for the newer series of cards that nvidia is scheduled to release shortly.
what gray screen of death?
meh, fanboys should be banned
I had previously two 9600GT's from nVidia which was cool, but the power usage was too big so I switched to HD 4870 which is better, cooler, lower TDP.
I am not a fanboy but I know what is better for a consumer and for now all that I can say is that nVidia cards are OVERPRICED and they don't bring anything new.
If nVidia won't release anything good with the FERMI GPU chips than ATI domination will grow!
Sorry, my deep knowledge of video cards has clearly caused great duress on you.
Call me a bullshitter all you want, but to be frank - you're a jerk.

If you are implying that I think I have an awesome video card because it is 1GB and that alone - then you have clearly misread my post. Especially when I put emphasis that you do not need anything special to run the game.
Hahahhahahah I never saw bigger bullshit in my life.
Are Blizzard spec that tarded that they specify graphic quality settings to VRAM ?... hahahahahahahaah
I am completly sure that with the HD 4850 or the GTX260 I would max the shit out of the game. Pure tardness.
Blizzard have really "Good tech people".
All other games have attached Ultra settings for DX10 graphics...but Blizzard had to be diffrent.
I really don't know with what path they set the option menu...wow I am ...just wow...maybe it's because all of GPU's with 1GB of RAM support DX10... I don't know, there is alot of graphic cards that have 256MB or 512MB of VRAM that support DX10... Blizzard never cease to amaze me.
they already have some performance issues, my i7 920 does not run it as fast as it could on the load.
Yup a HD4850 or GTX260 would max the shit out of this game. The graphics don't seem to be better than C&C4. Well I imagine they just put in high res textures, you can run it all on ultra except ultra textures then. Otherwise texture thrashing or whatever occurs? Happens all the time with FPS Games.
iD software put in 1GB textures in Doom3. This was back in 2004~ or whatever , on the basis of "Future proofing it".
And from the looks of it, they really do need 1GB textures . The game is not that pretty. The unit portraits are um...disappointing ..to say the least..
Xordiah writed that the i7 CPU's might work slower than usually
@hyde : . I have eleven computers running, between home and office, all with ATi cards, including onboard ones, and have had it that way for the last five years. Not a single problem. So I honestly don't know where people get "bad ATI drivers" from. It is based in urban legend, methinks.
nVidia, on the other hand, has always given me problems with my drivers, and in addition to that, their current cards can't hold a candle to the 5000 series. No, spychi is right on this one...if Fermi isn't up to speed, nVidia will continue to lose ground very rapidly.
The current state of nVidia is this: even when they DO release Fermi, ATi has the research headway and the money headway from the 5000 series, so ATi will drop a bombshell on Fermi that will defeat it, months after its release.
Right now nVidia is playing catchup, and they have a history of not doing that very well. Ever heard of the FX chips? Essentially rebranded Geforce 4s that were slower, hotter, and more expensive. That was their "catchup" to the 9700/9800pro. It took them...two years, three? to finally catch up. I fear that is their current situation. They could prove me wrong, but they have to actually release something for that to happen.
Fanboys have no place in the world of computers. Every company has good years and bad years, good products and bad products. When you forget that, you forget the very basis of computing: it's always changing.
I don't think I ever said I liked nVidia. I used to be an ATIFANBOI myself.
But ever since AMD took them over, I've had nothing but driver problems with my X1600 which I returned for a GeForce 8800. Now my 5770 is being a bitch with drivers.
But yah, I've always liked ATI's cheaper price and superior performance since the 9800 days. Though I don't like the idea of ATI no longer building their own cards. The one thing that really brought me to ATI was that they designed and made their own cards.
My friend's BFG nvidia cards blow out all the time.
But so far I've had no physical problems with this HIS brand Radeon 5770.
But hey if nvidia decides to stop being dumb and offer a better product, I'll jump boats instantly. Fan boy'ism leads to consumer foolishness and goes against free market competition.
I've seen a few mentions of getting a sound card, and thought I should ask in this thread.
What are some good examples of sound cards for gaming/listening to music? My hopeful budget for this is 50 bucks, but if I need to go higher, then I don't mind doing so for awesome sound.
Creative Technology Sound Blaster X-Fi its 30 dollars
I was thinking... Would this GPU max the game out and run smoothly?

Just built my new rig and I'm having a problem with getting windows 7 to install fully.
Once I get past step 2 and the comp restarts I get a message saying:
"Unexpected restart or error occured. Please restart to finish installation."
Everytime it restarts I get the same message. How do I get 7 to install correctly? Help!
Specs:
MSI 790x- G45 mobo
XFX 5670 1gb Graphics card
2x2gb Corsair DDR3 1333 ram
Windows 7 home premium 64bit
My mobo says it supports DDR3 upto 1200. Could the 1333 be causing the problem maybe?
DVD? or downloaded OS?
could be memory kit broken
btw I am building right now my new rig
I've got the Asus Xonar DX 7.1 sound card
soon I will get the i7-860, bought it today
and I will be waiting for the Sapphire 5870 1GB Vapor-X
http://nvision.pl/media/gals/2009/3/...apor-X%204.jpg
ain't she a beauty?
DVD install. I tried taking out the memory and leaving only the minimum amount but to no avail. I also get the 0x00000124 blue screen error code sometimes after I restart.
I tried that and its still giving me crap. I finally got windows to install but it keeps crashing. I tried to install windows again but it's back to doing the same thing it was before the successful install. I'm about to throw this thing in the garbage. Paying the extra for a pre-built isn't sounding so bad at the moment.
the ram speed is pretty important... but also -
How many watts is your PSU?
What CPU are you using?
*at first glance, i'd say you're having voltage issues between your ram and your mobo, but it could be something else too
*now i'm confused, newegg says 1200 mhz (oc), the product tour says 1600 mhz, and the manual says DDR2 800mhz...
CPU Phenom II x2 550. I knew I forgot something important to post. I got windows reinstalled for the moment. I went into the BIOS and found the voltage jacked up to 2.6v and manufacturers specs say 1.5v. The MoBo I have auto overclocks if other setting's allow it. I set everything to manual/off for the overclocking and it seems to be acting alright for the moment atleast.
So far everythings running fine after I corrected the voltages for the ram.
Ok my new build
Gigabyte p55 UD5 - seems that at tests it excels, I revisited some reviews saw alot of orgasm comments on this, so yeah I bought it, I am surprised cause it's cheaper than other p55 great motherboards
Corsair XMS3, DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333) - timings are not the best though, yet I don't really think that I will need anything more, will OC it up to 1600MHz
i7-860 OEM, so it means that I will need a cooler - gonna buy the Noctua cooler - since I can't find 1156 clips for my Scythe Ninja 2...doesn't really matter since I was planning that anyway
Radeon 5870 Vapor-X from Sapphire
all this I will have shipped next month
and yeah that will be it, the rest will remain the same
PSU I bought in 2008 is very good and stable
the Cooler Master CM690 will stay for some time, don't know how long
I am thinking about Antec Twelve Hundred
or CM 922 or CM cosmos or CM sniper
Ok, i think i've almost picked out my new build's parts...
Cooler Master eXtreme Power Supply (600W,SLI)
DFI LanParty JR 790GX-M3H5 (AM3, mATX, 2x 16x PCIE Crossfire)
AMD Phenom II X4 Processor 955 (3.2ghz, 4000mhz FSB)
Kingston 4G DDR3-1333 4GB Memory Kit (2x 2GB)
Sapphire Radeon HD5770 Vapor-X (1GB DDR5)
Should i go for crossfire right away? I'd think one 5770 would do extremely well in almost any game that's out right now... but you guys tell me :P
