Found this inserted into the OST case with the Collector's Edition. I don't remember ever seeing anything like this. Is this a picture commonly used for the band, or is it something else?

That polycount thread is really amazing. I love this internet age where the individual artists involved are just online and can post their individual contributions to a game. And anyone can talk to them. It's a really great time.
On my own art side, I'm trying a quick collaboration with GhostNova to see if I/we can get a SC1-sprite-looking hydralisk into SC2. I'm pretty happy with this model I made for it.

Okay, now I'm certain this one deserves a prequel. xD

That one IS the "prequel"!
I lol'ed. :D
Definitely some impressive painting skills on display there.
Here's an update of the classic Hydralisk GhostNova and I are working on. Still polishing it up a bit more, right now it has no portrait and he's gonna try to see about getting some more of the green goopy look in there when it fires. Here's a gfycat link with low image quality but a good framerate, or here's a gif with decent quality but a low framerate:

I will be allowed to die once ghostnova and you release all of your amazing SC1 models.
Are y'all going to do a mod with those models?
GhostNova has a lot of custom campaign stuff bouncing around in the works, but I think he also just enjoys making custom models and trying to recreate a BW-style look for fun, and most of his custom models are just up on SC2mapster for anyone to try. We're not collaborating on a SC2BW mod or anything, but if a SC2BW modder wants to use it, that'd be cool.
For my part, aside from the SC1 fixation, it's also both a little opportunity to show that I can create game assets that match an existing style and all that. The next level up would be to make something like a Heroes of the Storm character, which would be a lot more intense since they have a lot of sculpted and painted detail in a certain style. I may do that eventually, but the level of detail of SC2 models makes them easier to do.
Here's an update. That last gif was so blurry you couldn't really tell, but the textures are much improved now. We're working on the portrait as well.

GhostNova and I are working on another custom unit to follow up the BW-style Hydralisk. It's going to be the Arclite Siege Tank.
http://orig02.deviantart.net/ae90/f/...ar-daoixsi.gif
Model isn't quite finished but I think I captured the sprite very well.
How are you making the legs fit? I always assumed the sprite had them fold in and clamp between the treads.
(please don't go the Viking route)
Before I answer I'd like to point out the way the SC2 tank transforms and to look at the original sprite again.
Here's a gif of the tank in tank mode, and then the first two frames of the siege mode animation.
http://i.imgur.com/4KGkXlT.gif
The stabilizer arms just appear out of the sides of the main body, they weren't folded up. The feet are also pretty huge, there's no room for them. The only way they could possibly fit inside the tank is if the arms collapse like telescopes, and then inside the middle section one stabilizer would have to be stacked on top of the other. Of course that whole middle section would have to be pretty much completely hollow. Some fan art models decided to make the feet always stay on the outside even in tank mode to get around this, because it's really not a smart design (which is why they switched to folding legs on the outside for StarCraft: Ghost). But my goal here is to remain faithful.
The in-game SC2 tank's feet are way too large to fit through the hole in the sides of the middle set of tracks and clip through the ground, and when it's in tank mode they just clip together all of the leg pieces in one giant ball in the middle. It's part of SC2's style to have its pieces be so oversized, and then the clipping that comes with that is easily ignored because the way they animate the rest of the tank feels like it has some real weight to it, so no one complains about the tank, even though we all complain about the Viking not making sense.
http://i.imgur.com/AVy6Jcn.png
http://i.imgur.com/cjqWkI1.png
So in mine I can try to make it a little more realistic, already my stabilizer feet are too small, because I was trying to avoid having them clip through the treads when they emerge from the middle. Right now mine is maybe just barely possible. But since it's going to be a SC2 unit model, I'm probably going to end up with something very similar to the SC2 tank, because I'm trying to mimic that style.
Now if I were making a realistic-style arclite, I'd probably use a lot more inspiration from Ghost, and I did make a tank like that 3 years ago, when I was still just figuring Maya out (no clipping when the stabilizers fold here!).
http://orig02.deviantart.net/7097/f/...d4-d77pb50.png
If I make a tank to go with my main set of models for Unity that are all correctly scaled and everything, it'll be a cool hybrid design.
Check this out, someone made a high-detail, properly-sized Gateway... using the SC2 editor! Looks awesome.

EDIT 2: The Sequel

Damn, he's hella talented. Those pencil strokes are great, thanks for finding him!
Jonathan Berube has uploaded a ton of great images and videos showing the development of the Zealot and Probe cinematic models for LotV, as well as for updating the Ultralisk from the HotS intro.
Some of it is stuff we already knew about before, since some of the artists working on it posted their bits of it, but there's just a ton there. And he's uploaded videos showing turntables of the models and lighting on their surfaces and all that.

Yoo, the artist who modeled the Viking for the HotS intro posted pics of it (9 months ago, but I only just saw).

This is the best view we've ever had of the fighter mode. Though if I were to make my own version I would still scale down the cartoonishly large gatling guns / autocannons. Realllly not aerodynamic.
And mech mode:
https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets...ing-render.jpg
Interestingly, it looks like a 2-seater in fighter mode. The second person gets covered up when it transforms!
I really like that. It's like a protective vehicle for an important prisoner or someone they have to keep safe.
Oh hey and the in-engine cutscene one from Covert Ops is also on artstation, so we can see the underside. It's wayyy simplified. Here there's less of a division between the 'two' cockpits. Also compare the way the wings are supposed to be collapsible, I don't believe for a second that the pistons with this one would work.

I like the new version more, more details, it's similar to the in-game model and makes sense as a precursor of the sc2 hydra... Am i the only that doesn't give a heck about this remaster? "Re-enjoy 19 years old techincal limitations... but with prettier graphics"... No thanks Blizzard, i know that multiplayer is better and the story is more consistant, but no, i already own scbw.
I don't like the new art, its too "SC2 chubby with rounded kid-safe spikes" and overly designed for me.
and I already hate SC2s art to begin with.
Something was always a bit off about the original Hydralisk. The design is improved and the tone of the artwork is still fairly gritty. I approve.
