FB post re unit animation
Saw this through the steam of my morning coffee...
Quote:
The programming team has added some impressive new unit movement animations to the game. Air units like the phoenix and banshee bank on turns, roaches and hellions both rise when they start moving, and tanks slightly bob when stopping.
While on one level, maybe just slightly more exciting than say....new trees; how do you think this will potentially affect gameplay? A lot of SC playstyles require a near instantaneous response from units.
Keeping in mind we have not seen these animations for ourselves yet, is this a good direction for the look and feel of Starcraft?

Re: FB post re unit animation
I'm curious as to what those animations look like...sounds awesome though! I guess we'll have to wait to see how/if these new movement animations effect game play.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
Heres looking at you hellion.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
I forgot to mention that the original SC had a short phase where flying units 'banked' while turning - It was removed obviously, but never exactly knew why - Hopefully, some of you that were around for SC1's development can shed some light on that.

They won't. This is just beautification stuff. I've always been a sucker for little things that have detailed movements all on their own, so these little touches are always appreciated.

Re: FB post re unit animation
man .... BETA WTF
how bored are they? seriously... like hurry the fuck up ... put the programming team on bnet 2.0 team so we can get beta then worry about your tanks bobbing

You should be more worried the Hellion is still called the Hellion.
Worst. Name. Ever.

Re: FB post re unit animation
OMG! what is so terrible about a unit called "Hellion" on wheels?-.-

Re: FB post re unit animation
Unit animations have nothing to do with holding back the beta. We already know it's all about Bnet optimization.
The worst thing Blizzard can do is release the beta, and having Bnet crash the first day and be unstable for the following 2-3 weeks. THAT would be bullshit.

Hmmmmmmmm, not really.

I dont know - While I think waiting for beta has been pretty brutal, worse would be to have it right there in front of you and not be able to do anything because of a three week log jam.

Re: FB post re unit animation
Regardless of gameplay in SC1, in instant response from units may not be necessary. If you play SC2 long enough, you'll learn to time the movements and reactions for units, and it'll add even more skill necessary to play the game effectively.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
I prefer instant unit response time (latency aside) thankyouverymuch
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
Damnit I thought they were actually showing the animations.
Anyway, I hope what Nicol says is right, and that these don't affect gameplay (if not bring them all on I love details like these). I just hope it doesn't become like WC3 style turning.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
Well the Wc3 style didnt effect gameplay -.- But i totally agree with you guys that want instant actions from units. Hav anyone of you played Supreme commander?? try microing there xD

Re: FB post re unit animation
Awesome news! Hopefully the Banshee gets some helicopter-like inertia goin' on.

Re: FB post re unit animation
I thought Jackal was a perfect name. I have no idea why they decided to go with Hellion. Hellion is just too boring and generic. If they actually knew what a Jackal was and how it behaves, they would see that it makes perfect sense. A Jackal is a species of dog commonly associated with Egypt. They run in packs and are scavengers. Right there you have a creative name that has a meaning which alludes to how the unit works best in gameplay. They should go in groups and are great for harassing.

If done right, it doesn't needs to affect gameplay. It's not the shitty SC1 engine that couldn't fire while playing a dumb animation (Dragoon, i'm looking at you...).
Anyways, if the turn is fast enough, there won't be any problem, specially if the unit's sight range is longer than the attack range, and they rotate on sight.
Units also rotate in SC1, anyways. If they're pointing left and must go right, they must turn down-left, down, down-right, then right. On fastest speed it's very fast, however.

Re: FB post re unit animation
Keep in mind that all of the animations are meant to look natural at "normal" speed.
When everyone plays on "fastest" it will look a bit silly.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
Vultures look silly turning instantly on fastest speeds. Even big units like BC's. Was funny when you made a group of em 'spin' on spot.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
I remember this funny little bug where if you tell a dropship to move just right it will spin around in circles indefinitely.

Source on this? Since all ladder games will be played on fastest speeds it makes little sense to put animations in that will look "silly". I see no example in this in war3 o.0 Not to mention they certainly would take this into account when adding a new animation.

Re: FB post re unit animation
No animator animates a character at 3X its speed just because some players choose to play like that. Keep in mind the unit's actual movement is affected by code factors as well, like movement speed, turning ratio etc.
I mean, they'll obviously fix any flickering or stuttering in the animations, but stuff like turning on a dime or spinning in circles is a pathing issue in higher speed gameplay, not a problem with animation.

They don't "choose" to play like that its the standard for competitive play(and there own ladder) and they KNOW this already, with the focus on the competitive side of sc2 being shown.
If there willing to make changes to unit deaths to help readability in online play, they would change up any animations that also mess up things, that said I don't think there will be any issues anyway.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
A source would be nice. It says something similar in Twitter, but doesn't name the affected units.
-
Re: FB post re unit animation
Couldn't we at least get a battle report? I love watching those.

Carrier was worse, the minute it even shuddered all the interceptors swarmed back.

Carrier is here. It's ClubDay MSL's Opening video.

Re: FB post re unit animation
Well, I'm definitely more concerned about the flying units - Pretty sure 'bobbing' tanks aren't going to break much :) Concerned mostly about reduced control over the units. I mean, if we're talking, 'barrel rolls' thats fine.
So does the Hellion peel out and do wheelies now? - How exactly does it 'rise'?
Hopefully we'll all get a look at that soon. :)

Re: FB post re unit animation
Stuff like this can only raise the "System requirments" bar -.- do not like this....

On-topic:
If you've watched a plane or helicopter turn in real life, this is banking a turn. I'm not going to assume Blizzard will go for this much realism, but this can slow down the affected units, which would cause the possible microing difficulty mentioned previously.
Tank/Hellion bobbing note: Watch a car race of any kind. The bobbing is that brief shudder right after the complete stop where the car/truck stops.
I don't think these changes will affect the system requirements enough to worry about it.
And what's wrong with the name Hellion? Sure, I would prefer Jackal, but Blizz is known for a minimum amount of humor. They could have done a better joke than "Hellion on wheels," though. Makes me picture my now deceased 90ish year old neighbor Helen with her cane in the air and curlers in her hair behind the roof mounted gun...
OK... change it back to Jackal please. The mental visual of the "Grannion" just kills me.
