WE ARE AT BETACON 2. LAUNCH THE BOMBERS.
Really? Why, you think it's later? :)
(Caliban puts back wallet and decides hes gonna hold off on any bets until after the 1st....)
Truth is, I feel I am being optimistic with an end-of-Feb Beta - I'd love to be wrong; I'd pass out if it were this Friday, but I just think the upcoming news is related to Bnet2 (with Beta rolling along sometime soon after)
The Jace thing could easily be staged as a joke, or even something that was taken out of context....so I'm not buying into that just yet.
On the other hand, Gifted practically told me he would take my bet in a flash, and pretty much start spending it immediately on a round of shots....so who knows?
Also, No need fer anybody to rage.......trust me, no one here will be happier to be wrong - lemme tellz ye. :)
post 900 fer me.....yay me.
.
Didn't we already figure that the beta will be announced with Blizzard's financial report over the internet? The one on Feb 10th or whatnot?
Just my humble opinion, but I still think that investor's don't have any interest in when a beta starts. They want to know what financial quarter the cash will start flowing from game sales.
We are more likely to hear an estimate on release date during that call than we are a beta start date.
*prays to God*
wow
now I am beyond excited about this friday
all the signs..
Blizzard is gearing up to unleash the greatest doodad renderings of all time
Awesome! I was hoping for an update on the current state of the random tree rendering algorithms!
The Starcraft 2 team has been hard at work on sidewalk doodads.
Guys more clues. This time from Barbury, England

Coincidence?
I THINK NOT!
SC2 is only a small portion of Activision Blizzard, and most big investors aren't going to be particularly interested in the release date, and if they are then the textbook "SC2 is on track for a Q2 release" is more than enough. They aren't drooling over beta like we are, and ATVI stock won't budge an inch.
You honestly think investors don't really care about when a game that can easily be the highest grossing videogame of this year is going to be released? This latest quarter had MW2 rake in like 1.2 BILLION dollars, and if they can follow that up with starcraft 2 sales later this year, I can guarantee that stock will take a nice climb.
Seriously, think about it. If it's ONLY for investors then why is it publically broadcasted for everyone? If it was only interesting to stockholders and they wanted to make it easier to watch then they would have some way of allowing them to access it on the internet privately.
It being public is a very, very, very important fact and it means more than most people realize.
I honestly do believe that. At a sales call they're mostly interested in sales, and beta is in no way any sort of news for them. ATVI is a massive company; SC2 is a pretty small bit relative to the "big picture" investors are looking at.
ATVI stock was up 10% after the conference call where they said SC2 was delayed half a year.
You mean the conference call when they said they were on track for a modern warfare 2 release just before the holidays?
This is a videogame company, investors look at their products which in this case is the videogames. Starcraft 2 is a HUGE part of ATVI right now, Activision acquired Blizzard for WoW and in anticipation of Starcraft 2. Thats Blizzard's main revenue and potential revenue.
Let me try and explain again, beta = sales. If beta starts Feb 1, that means I as an investor can expect big sales to start happening between June 1 - August 1, as opposed to being in limbo for the past 2 years with no beta info. Investors invest in ANTICIPATION of games, look at the build up of the stock from early 09 to the release of MW2. Expect the same when sc2 finally has a solid deadline and release(aka BETA).
Your average investor cares about earnings reports and earnings predictions. Many of them don't give two shits about video games. The word beta is absolutely meaningless to them, and it should be too early for them to set an official release date. Honestly if Blizzard wanted to make a big announcement about future products it would probably be about their new IP MMO.
Beta is not sales, and investors don't follow SC2 closely like we do.
And no, SC2 is not a huge part of ATVI, and probably won't affect Q2 earnings much even if they manage to release it in June.

People invested in Blizzard don't invest in Blizzard because they make fantastic cars.
Your statement is just a copy of what others have said and only ignorant morons believe it. If you invest in a company focused primarily on video games, well obviously you care when a video game is released. Its you're damn money. Investing in either Activision or Blizzard means you're doing it because there's potential profit you see there. And if said company is developing a game for six years, profit is not maximized, thus money might be lost.
So.....really? - no one has anything to say about Gifted's last post in this thread?
Gifted is part of the rebel alliance, and a traitor. Take him away!

Please don't call me an ignorant moron. This isn't the SC2 General discussion forum, and baseless insults add nothing to this discussion.
Many investors invest to make a profit without any vested interested video games themselves. They don't care about a silly free beta. Also please keep in mind that it's all now one big stock under ATVI, and SC2 is relatively small portion of investment when you consider all the massive publications the Activision branch has going + WoW.
Yeah, no offense but thats pretty naive. People, including myself, invest in companies of particular industries since thats what their stocks are compared against. Activision Blizzard is a videogame company in the videogame industry, of course the investors look at their development and release line-up. People don't look at a company and say "Oh gee, they just made alot of money, I'm going to invest in them." Its about prediction and the best way to anticipate growth in a company, and consequently its stock, is to examine the products they are releasing and plan to release in the future.
Examining ATVI's value as a company and it's stock value includes a MUCH larger picture than SC2 alone. Like I said to Rick, Activision has a lot going on. Yes, SC2 matters, but the beta does not. A single sentence in the conference saying "We're on track with SC2" would be more than enough.
And no offense (seriously, not parodying you), but these calls are most strongly intended for a specific audience of investors, and you don't strike me as a million-dollar investor.
Keep in mind this whole topic got started off of whether or not a beta announcement would be a significant event at an earnings call. The answer is: A single sentence saying "Starcraft 2 is still scheduled for a Q2 release" would work just as well as some big beta announcement.
Not necessarily, because announcing when the beta starts indicates a set release window in 4-6 months. Announcing the quarter of release might be less reassuring.
Nevertheless, I believe since they are making this a public conference over the internet, that Blizzard is not just aiming for investors.
Here's a little something I wrote on another forum that I think applies here fairly well:
When it comes to Blizzard, often times it's not the strength of a single rumor but the number and timing of them. Right now, there's sooo many rumors and news items coming from various areas of the internet hinting at a beta soon from every angle. That's incredibly similar to how it was with the Diablo 3 announcement and the StarCraft 2 announcement. You know, the one that most people didn't think would happen and Blizzard themselves had denied :D
For example, I waited anxiously on the forums for months for the announcement of Diablo 3 and many times there were singular, strong rumors which seemed to point towards the announcement. However, it wasn't until there were many smaller rumors happening all at once (like is happening now) that the announcement was given.
This is one of the things I've learned from Blizzard over the years and is the major reason I never got my hopes up before as much as I am now. From what I've experienced in the past, this is the closest to the past announcements that has happened thus far. If you're feeling too cautious to get your hopes up then I understand. But, if you're not worried about disappointment, then I think we have a lot to be excited about!

Also, I do find Gifted's comments interesting but, in the end, it's just more off him playing with us so I'm going to not think about it much because my hopes are already getting a bit too high for my comfort.
How would an investor know the beta will be 4-6 months? They won't know it off the top of their head like we do.
The only way they would know what the beta entails in terms of a release date would be if Morhaime/Kotick told them during the conference, in which case no matter what you have investors taking Blizzard at it's word that "Starcraft 2 is on track for a Q2 release."
Blizzard probably wants to generate a lot of hype with their announcement, and a lot of that hype would be wasted on investors who just care about the bottom line.Very possible, but nothing I've gotten my hopes up about. Also like I said it could be an announcement regarding the new IP MMO.Quote:

*the fingers are twitching.. the keyboard is afraid... Gifted starts typing.... Defcon 3 starts*
Incoming...
Tychus I think you summed a lot of things up pretty well. Any one of these things happening on their own would feel pretty meaningless, but when they all happen at once like right now I think we all have a little reason to be excited :)
As for my final prediction on the conference call: I don't think any of us reading this now are going to care about the conference call because we will already know what we want to know by then.
Do not release the beta if the zerg is still like the zerg in sc1 and the hellion buggy is still the same. thank you.
