If they stick with the recoloured Tempest I really doubt it.

they should just scrap the unit. All it is, is a gg unit, that means a Protoss player has too much money if used properly. There's more than one way to win a game, and carrier spamming is one Starcraft could do without.
I never found use for the carrier (being an avid Protoss player), and i only ever used it for fun against friends when I wanted to wipe my victory in their face. For it to become useful, it should at least be able to take out a battlecruiser on its own. The tempest's ground defense at least gave it a bit more character.
Its one of few units that hasn't gone through gameplay remodeling, and probably the most in need of on. Getting back to the topic, Blizz made a step back with the new carrier model, and needs the same kind of rehash as the siege tank.
As a business student and from a lore perspective, I can't help but to think of the tremendous and pointless waste to research and design a new massive space ship pretty much identical in functions and capabilities, especially when you already have valuable know-how of how to build the old Carrier. Keeping the old Carrier could allow for the Protoss to easily salvage components for repairs from the many Carrier wrecks that should be spread all over the sector. For a people under threat of extinction it doesn't seem to make much sense to use precious time and resources like this and so it makes the Protoss look stupid. I'm sure there are ways you could somewhat justify it with some thatched-on lore explanation though.
If there would be no gameplay specific changes to the Carrier then I think it should retain the old model.. the poll does mean the old SC1 Carrier translated into 3D right?
Definetily the new one, it looks so advanced and futuristic, and i like its angles, where the old one looks like a zeppelin :p
Actually the old carrier design is my second most ugly unit in sc1, the one being the Science vessel ;)
Cue me:
As others have pointed out, it's entirely possible that the ring in the center of the new Carrier is in fact a small warp gate. Hence, the new lore could say that recent development in the understanding of the Void has allowed the Protoss to create stable, portable gateways. Powered by dedicated matrices of their own, these new Carriers possess a direct conduit to the Interceptor factories and repair facilities on Shakuras. From here, the Interceptors are launched directly into combat through the Carriers' portals at which point the Carriers take control of the robotic automatons.
By using this centralized factory, the Protoss no longer have to produce the thousands of Interceptors needed to outfit the many Carriers of their fleet; instead deploying those that they have into the field only at times of active combat. This carried the further benefit of not losing all the Interceptors in the event a Carrier is shot down. In addition, as they no longer need to carry Interceptor components, a mobile factory and an onboard repair bay (all of which were impractical anyway), the new Carriers no longer needed to be so large in size.
Keep in mind the lore hints of "Super Carriers" like the Gantrithor.
Just wondering, has anybody ever thought that the Carrier doesn't realy feel like a Protoss unit, i mean wouldn't a capital ship make more sense for them?
The terrans should have carriers (weak but high firepower) and the Protoss should have capital ship ( single heavy shielded ships), even the yamato ability would have more sense as an protoss ability, i mean where are the protoss capital ships from the cinematics, that have glased whole planets, and wouldn't carriers feel perfect as a terran unit, (marine- navy- carrier) ;)
Any thoughts?
Carriers are capital ships. They're used that way in real life. However, for gameplay reasons, a protoss carrier isn't nearly as awesome as a real-life aircraft carrier (and tend to be used in larger numbers, too).
The lore behind Yamato sounds terran to me.Quote:

Sure, but then so are battleships. In real-life, battleships have been abandoned because carriers are so much better, but with hundreds of years of technological advances, maybe terrans think battlecruisers are better than carriers.Quote:

I always thought the UED should use carriers (similar to those of the US Navy), and that could have been a way to distinguish them from Koprulu Sector fleets. Brood War couldn't handle that kind of change, however.

And a little part of me just died.
