Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Blizzard is well known for paying homage to other sci-fi sources. What do people think about modeling the Bengalass critter after the Thanator predator from Avatar.
Obviously, it wouldnt be an exact copy but rather a unique Blizzard spin on Thanator concept. A reimagined Bengalaas with six legs, large, deadly and sporting an aggresive headpiece. Blizzard could even go the nine yards and say the Bengalass have a connection with the Protoss which would explain why they vanish in the same way the protoss die.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
The funny part is that I did compared StarCraft with avatar after watching it ^^
They both look preaty familiar, it might work. Though most critters should get a remodel and a defined story in the starcraft universe, the same way as the zerg "past lives" where discribed.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
I don't see why not. The military in Avatar had a lot of Terran-y stuff, why not borrow from each other.

I also got an "Aiur" vibe from Pandora. I like it.

I think Blizzard could really get allot from Pandora especially the buaetiful and deadly theme. I would love to play missions with exotic plant life that swayed like sea anenome and ferocious jungle creature that ambushed your troops.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Blizzard can create it's own universe which it is doing, it doesn't need to rip it off of movies. Paying homage and taking stuff from movies are two totally different things.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Dude I got so many SC vibes when I watched that movie.
— nerve chords from the back of the head
— interconnecting energy/nerve system
— alien hunter race of superior strength and stature
— human vehicles similar to banshees and dropships
— wildlife similar to that found on Aiur

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
The dude who created the tyranids worked on starcraft, big deal? what do you expect, it's the modern interpretation of an alien.

lol and did they also have a guy who worked on starship troopers, aliens, halo, dune, etc.... Your going to have to do better than one coincidence (btw to my knowledge no gamesworkshop employees worked on starcraft 1 but there is a rumor Blizzard was orginally hired to make a gamesworkshop game)
Blizzard takes inspiration from all types of sources. Its part of what makes their games so great.

I know about Andy Chambers (big fan) he didnt work on Starcraft 1. He has only recently come to Blizzard to work on Starcraft 2. Nice try though ;)

anyway, back to the topic, I do think blizzard should take influence from avatar. It's like a starcraft/warcraft movie experience for me. Btw, the bengalaas should look a bit like the thanator but not look exactly like it.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
It took you guys this long to think of that?
Dude, when I first saw the trailer for Avatar, my impression was "Terran Marines Versus Night Elves"
But hey, Avatar definitely deserves some mention. Like, say, for a Banshee pilot when you click on her enough...
*"I didn't sign up for this shit."
*Sound of Gatling Guns firing.

Thinking about Avatar and Starcraft got me wondering again how the hell the Protoss mate.
-
Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
maybe they mate using their psionic appendages. kinda like what i saw in avatar.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Bengalass is my favorite critter in the game and I thought it's a cat. However Thanator looks like a Rhynadon in my opinion)))

I think your thinking of the Hammerhead Titanothere. The Thanator was the giant panther creature. The Hammerhead Titanothere was the rhino herbavore creature.

Hammerhead Titanothere is too huge for a Rhynadon. It should be compared to an elephant. And Thanator doesn't remind me of a cat with its view.

light swords and summersalting old men. Also theirs just a ton of other stuff from Star wars in Starcraft. For one the Force was the original sci-fi mystic/religion/superpower energy that binds warrior space monks. Another great example is,

Edit: oh and what about the ion cannon that they needed to destroy to leave Tarsonis. Look familiar?

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Every single SCI-fi movie, game, cartoon, is inspired by all the ones before it. You ain't discovering America. But oh well, like you said, you must be really, really, really, bored... You should now search for all the inspiration or "rip-offs" from the star wars movies, and continue with the halo games, then maybe u can go with Final fantasy games.

The arguement was that Blizzard doesnt take stuff from movies. My counter-arguement was that Blizzard is all about taking stuff from movies, books, games and thats part of what makes thier universe so cool. You guys need to stop looking at this as copyright lawyers and start looking at it as Tolkien.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
I want to see a new zerg unit made out of an infested/assimilated benglass or ragnassaur. That would just be remarkably cool.
GO BLIZZARD GO!

I've been eagerly waiting for a Zerg unit based on a creature from Auir. So much potential.

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
By the time the 3rd part of Sc2 is released we are just going to be encouraging Blizzard to cannibalize everything they can into the damn game.
-
Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
View it from the bright sight guys. Later when Starcraft2 is released, it will be other sci-fi games/movies who will be copying from our game.

Except, if they copy recent things like the Thanator, they'd just claim that those other things were what inspired them instead. ;)
Here's something I noticed: When copying from older material, it's called 'paying homage' or 'taking inspiration from'. When copying from something more current, it's called 'a rip-off'.

Because the mayority of today's work is considered hollow or non-sense compared to the classics from the past that, according to their point of view, must be honored.
-
Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
I wouldn't say that.
A majority of the best lines in SC were taken straight out of Aliens, and it wasn't done because they couldn't make up anything better or because they felt they had to honour Aliens. They did it because it would be funny or cool.
There is a lot of modern work that isn't 'hollow' that's not directly based on classics. District 9 is a prime example.

Thing is, the 'Alien' franchise started in 1979. So, that could be considered an older piece of work. By 'new', I'm referring to things from the past few years (though exact cut-off is vague, possibly between 5-10 years).

Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Brood War came out just after Starship Troopers and their was a whole lot of Starship Troopers in that game.

That is only because of the Protoss's teleportation devices in their suits cause said flashes, so.....
