Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Creeps were in WC3 for leveling heroes. I don't think SC2 will have creeps in the same thought, but one or two aggressive creatures wont hurt... even in multiplayer. That new thread about Terran's ease in expanding to islands, it would be nice to have dinosaurs defending expansions instead of rocks once in a while.
Or, another idea.. infestable critters. Why should terrans and protoss be the only species of interest for the Zerg? For example in the Zerg campaign, Kerigan sees space dinosaurs and decides that she must have them in the swarm!:D

Some time ago, there was a flash animation about that. Terrans were lookin for a beast that the zergs wanted to infest, so they had to arrive first to destroy the beast before the zergs took it. I never saw the ending, but it was a great story.

Marine: Take that thing out before...
Dinosaur: RAAAR! (bites rifle)
Haha! I wanna see that!
Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Most "new" ideas are inspired from or reworked versions of previously created material. As an English Major, I feel like it is my responsibility to lay this down as a near fact. It's fucking difficult to come up with a completely new idea on your own.
@SC2: its a new game spaced 11 years (at least! god forbid more...) apart from its predecessor. The difference in graphics is astounding. I expect artistic changes and updates to make the game "live" more. Sometimes, its the little things that bring the world closer to reality. Detail makes the game more immersive.

Just found out that many animal sounds in Avatar are actually a recicle of Jurasic Park's dinosours ^^

It's ok, they had good sound effects in Jurassic Park.
Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
Avatar also had the "Wilhelm scream."

Almost every movie I've seen has the Wilhelm Scream in it. The first time I was told about the wilhelm scream I felt like I was being brought into a secret cult. :P
Now I'll try to bring this thread back into at least something a little closer to topic. :P
Archer, I think the bony plates on the forehead of the SC2 Protoss has more to do with the technology available to blizz at the time and what they were able to do with 3D then contrasted to now. The Protoss art has always had the bony plates above the forehead ever since sc1.
The thing about SC2's development that I personally have found interesting is that for the most part each race has a more developed feel. Not everything reflects this yet but I think the protoss in SC2 are a prime example. The units and buildings have a wonderful balance of unity and diversity that wasn't quite achieved in sc1. Don't get me wrong I think sc1 protoss looks great, but the design work for protoss in sc2 far exceeds what I expected.
Going back to my original point, I have to pose the question. How much credit for the new updates can be given to the burden of technical difficulties being lifted and how much really is redesigning and reinventing the races?

While there were depictions of bony crested some protoss in SC1 most were of the "conehead" variety. Now with SC2 bony crests are now present and much more prominent on every member. The bony crest has also been pushed in the direction of the zerg bony crest which ties in with my theory that this has to do with hybrids or xel'naga.
Re: Idea: Making the Bengalass critter look like the Thanator
The technology used isn't necessarily better than the old 2D sprites. They are using low poly 3D models with normal mapping and custom shaders for SC2. If they were using rendered sprites using today's technology, you could probably see units with a lot more detail. However, sprites wouldn't be able to use a lot of the physics-based tech and proper lighting and shadow techniques that 3D models can provide. Even the portraits in SC2 are higher res game models, not rendered cinematics like in SC1.
Technology has opened up a lot of potential, but a good part of SC's art evolution is due to the fact that Blizzard is hiring more experienced and talented artists. The final product is only as good as the artists who design and create the art, not the technology that allows it.
Ultimately it boils down to art direction and design, and how that has changed in the 10 years since SC1.
