Is it possible they could be mechanical or energy based like the Necrons and C'tan? I ask because it wouldn't be the first time Blizzards followed Games Workshop mythology ;)

They're almost certainly organic, since they're composed of two previous species which fused.

Is it not possible for them to still be mechanical? As vessels for in between cycles? Im still reading the lore (kinda been avoiding Xel'naga spoilers but i guess i need to research it to answer this).
Ill be honest I read the Starcraft novel with the phoenix creature coming out of the tomb and it reminded me exactly of the C'tan lore in the necron army book.
If the case is really closed and there is proof that their organic than yah close this thread. Im just not sure that Protoss and Zerg being organic doesnt mean the Xel'naga can't be mechanical or energy based for at least part of their life cycle.Quote:

The lore behind the Necrons (if I remember correctly) is that they were beings that had short lives. They found a star being orbiting thier sun and made a pact with it. It granted them enternal life in the form of living metal bodies. In return the necrons would be slaves and help the star beings consume souls. The star beings (C'tan) than used the necrons to wage a galaxy wide war against the "Old Ones" however a greater evil "The Enslavers" emerged. The Enslavers consumed all of the sentient beings that the C'tan required. Eventually one of the lesser races recieves a foretelling that the C'tan are close to awakening.

Yeah, the Xel'Naga being just some organic race like everybody yet the ones first (and so uses manipulation to remain in power) sounds kinda lame in the sci-fi scene, but very dramatic nonetheless imo.
This is very interesting.
I always imagined the Xel' Naga as being somewhat similar (in concept at least) to the Vorlons/Shadows from the Babylon 5 universe or the Yuuzhan Vong from Starwars.
Even the Yuuzhan Vong utilize completely organic 'worldships' to travel between galaxies. That sort of brings to my mind the Xel' Nagea worldships.
