Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
All it does it unlock Dark Templar. Why don’t they just replace the obelisk with the Dark shrine? The building model for dark shrine is vastly superior and it looks more like an obelisk.
Move Dark templar back to templar archives to make them more useful again.

You can see it’s a vastly superior model. And they both contain a crystal type object.

Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
Sounds good, different buildings for HT/DT tech always seemed dumb anyway.
-
Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
If it stays as a separate building it should have some special ability like arbiter's cloaking aura, or the building itself could be cloaked, that would make it harder to scout and made the building a bit less dull.
OR
make dark obelisk an upgrade for normal-macro-mechanic obelisk that allows production of dark templars ;d

Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
Another idea -
Have THREE dark templar units.
Single Warp blade = regular dark templar 40 dmg etc
Double warp blade = uncloaked, much more damage 80dmg, much lower health
Dual welding blade = 30 dmg each blade (doing fast attack) and runs fast (ie upgraded zealot with charge)
Each corresponds with a type of counter (ie, cloaked DT is good for harass) Double warp blade are good against buildings/hard targets
Dual welding is good against melee
Etc
Dark shrine can toggle a path. Ie, if you choose single, it allows you to build single warp blade. If you choose double, it builds that.

I think the description of the Boros sounded just like the void ray pilot's face.

Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
What, are Xsoldier and I the only ones who noticed?
Anyhow, with Wankey's idea, that would really only work in campaign, as he neglected to mention. And I'm not sure how good of an idea that would be, if they're only different models of melee units.

Wow it's Quirel, long time no see.

Oh, I've always been here. You just didn't see me because I didn't want you to see me, in which case, if I see you before you see me...
Look out!
Eh, I've been here for the past month or two, after a long absence. Sorry.

Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
I'm torn here, because while I don't like a building that is enables one single unit and has no tech, I also think that the Dark Templar are way too cool to be just slapped back in with the High Templar. Ultimately I'd prefer it if the building enabled two different units (preferably for two different buildings), but an aura ability like Tritanis suggested is the best I can see happening.

Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
Oohh! I know, Dark Shrine + Templar Archives are needed for Mothership!
Which of course then gets a model makeover combining dark and high templar tech.

I don't know about that, but I'll go for the suggestion that they're need for Cloaking Field and Wormhole Transit respectively.

That's what I thought. Whenever I think of the Boros I get the image of a Dark Templar decked out in armor like a Yautja. They are said to be heavily armed and armored.

Par for the course for Blizzard.

Precisely. They always make subtle references to other sci-fi things (Aliens, Star Trek, etc). I think that the design fits really well, as well as the reference.

I believe the term is, about as subtle as a brick.

I think that would make the mothership even more rare in games than in already would be...

Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
Dark shrine was added because otherwise the templar archives would unlock 3 units.
HT's, DT's and archons. It's also about timing/scouting. Now if you get scouted as a protoss the opponent has more information.
It used to be only, 'is he going for 2 gateways, or a cybernetics core?' Now you can take in more information if you succesfully scout a protoss player.
-
Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
What are you even talking about. The Templar Archives always used to unlock 3 units if you’re counting archon.
Hell, it used to unlock FOUR units if you count archons.

Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
My apologies. Seems i was mislead in a previous conversation i had. I should have verified my self.
Thanks for pointing that out.

That's exactly what they don't want to do.
Just because it was that way in SC1 doesn't mean they don't want to fix it for SC2. And there are plenty of 'boring' buildings that only provide tech for units.

Because those are natural expansions to the tech tree. This is a leaf on the end of the tech tree that doesn’t offer much in terms of reward (yeah yeah dark templar, it’s been said DTs are pretty useless in SC2)
-
Re: Dark shrine seems to be a very boring building
Perhaps they should offer more tech options for the DT, like some upgrades or researchable abilities or something. Lots of SC buildings in all three races gave you only one unit, but they also either advanced the tech tree or gave some upgrades and/or abilities for the unit it enabled.

A lot of things have "been said" about units in SC2. And SC1 for that matter. A lot of wrong things. Hell, just look at imba.Adolf; on Day 1 he was not impressed with the Hellion, and on Day 2 he was just fine with it.

I'm sure they're no less useful than they were in the original StarCraft.

So what if they're used to it? It's poor game design to have two such different and powerful units come from the exact same tech.

I saw all 3 movies, but I'm sad people lost interest around them. The third one looked horrible.

I think he's talking about the novel (ie, 1959), not the movie (1997-8).
