THOR and MARAUDER FIX
INTRO
As seen in BR4 the thor is massable and capable of handling almost all types of enemy units. It has decent ground damage and air damage. It also can act as a tank.
Together with the marauder, other units like the viking and tanks are most of the time unnecessary.
Originally the thor was presented as a very powerful attack unit with a major weakness, it moves extremely slow and also rotates slow while attacking. In BR4 none of this weakness are present.
The thor seems to have turned into a terran normal core massable attack units instead of making it a specialized unit which i prefer.
Why would you still make marines, banshee, viking etc in a straight fight if you have lots of minerals, just make plenty of thors since it really has no real weakness and has all the firepower.
So here is my thor fix. Pros and Cons. Purpose of it and counters against it.
THOR FIX
+Make the thor move epic slow when moving, its damn fitting. Siege tanks, warp rays, guardians will own this thing easily since it still has to move (epic slow) to be able to reach its attack range.
+ Give the thor a slow charging energy blast attack or a red devil mega energy pulse blaster canon that deals massive damage against single unit as its normal attack. Kills tank in 2 shots. Kills roaches and marauders instantly.
So the main purpose of the thor is to destroy strong enemy units like tanks, colossus, ultralisk or any light ground units in few numbers easily except immortals.
Give it an energy base weapon to make the thing look more impressive. Shells and projectiles for this kind of heavy mech is just plain mediocre. Just look at it in BR4. The look of the giant thing is epic the attack is bland.
+ Another important weakness and so that the energy beam visual will work is to make the thor unable attack enemies at close or melee range.
Zealot and other melee units attacking as thor can never be attack back by the thor. The thor wont fire its beam at nearby enemies just like the siege tank in siege mode. Micro here for the big fella.
+ The above mentioned weakness actually presented another purpose for the thor mech which is to act as a tank. So give the thor more hp than usual.
+ Remove the back flak canons because its the one that makes the crucio tanks sometimes useless. It looks awful and trying hard as well. Replace it to an uver missile launch pod to attack enemy light air units.
The thor don't need ground splash damage, its one of its weakness and separates its from the ultralisk, colosus, and archons which all do splash damage. Ground splash damage is already the tanks role.
+ The thor act now as a specialized powerful unit and is not meant to be mass produce unless you are facing mass light air units. The thor is there to act as a tank for your troops and to take down strong enemy units like archons, tanks, colossus.
+ Battlecruiser (w/ yamato) or any heavy armored air units, Guardian, lurkers, immortals, warp rays, tanks (siege mode), Dark templar, mass light ground units close to the thor are the perfect counters.
+ Ultralisk, Colossus, Archon, are strong AOE damage dealer, the thor deals massive damage against single unit. Big difference.
BONUS: Because the thor can't attack enemies at close range, maybe the rebirth ability will work or something else like self destruct ability.
MARAUDER FIX
+ Remove the bonus damage against armored enemy of the marauder.
It conflicts with the siege tank and the thor. Without it the marauders will not be massed going up against all enemy ground units.
+ Keep the ice slowing effect and give it a little splash AOE (only slowing not actual damage).
+ Marines with shield should have almost the same hp as the marauder at a very lower cost.
The current marauder being effective at both light and armored ground units makes the marines useless. So lets even up the ratio so that both units will be mix most of the time. yeh and remove its bonus damage against armored units.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Theorycrafting FTL. The game isn’t even in beta and somehow you’ve figured out how to “fix” an assumed “problem".
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
MY THOR FIX. MY SUGGESTED FIX.
Im just adding suggestion on how to fix overlapping roles and making other units not useless and make the thor fit in. Because from what i know many thinks the thor still don't have a clear role.
Maybe blizzard will forget to give the thor energy base weapons so here it is.
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
I'm sorry but I'm not even going to attempt to read your one sentence every other line post. It's almost as bad as a wall of text.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
expected it. wonder whats the solution for this. change the color.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Theorycrafting is great, and it keeps a lot of us entertained through these sad, beta-less days... :(
But when you talk about fixes, that implies something is broken, which I don't think any of us can know for sure at the moment =/
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Read the thor fix at least. =)

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Theorycrafting is great when you actually have a game to play. This is just a discussion that’ll never end ‘cause it’s my opinion vs yours and no way to really prove it.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
so you like everything about the thor now? how it looks and how it plays
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
On the visual end, I'm gonna go ahead and disagree that the Thor needs some sort of "energy weapons" or whatever weapon upgrade it would receive.
Anything 'cool' that exists about the unit's visual identity comes precisely from its LACK of coolness. It's slow, it's unwieldy, it's awkward -- these are suggestions you made! and I agree with completely. It's a bunch of huge guns put together on a chassis, and some guy on a power-trip presses a button and it lurches in that direction for a while.
What you want from it makes it more Protoss, when it's one of the most identifiably, unabashedly Terran units on the field. Primitive. Cobbled together. It's a walking, talking Nuke. Not a walking, talking particle displacer, or something.

I've always liked how it looks. So impeccably Terran. Indeed, it's even more Terran than it was originally; back then, it only had 2 weapon systems. Now it has three, totaling 8 functional barrels.
As for its function, I like how it makes the Terran's Mech-playmore mobile. I like how it compliments a number of Terran builds, yet is expensive enough (particularly in gas) to allow alternative builds that don't involve them.
I'm very scared about the possibility of mass Thor drops to take out Hatcheries, though. Even so, it's something I'd want to see tested to decide whether it needs changing.
The Marauder is a unit the Terrans have needed for some time: an infantry ground specialist. The only concerns are with its sheer strength in that department; maybe it has too many Hp. Again, that's something that Blizzard will test and adjust through Beta.
My point is this. The Thor and Marauder are both at what I would consider Beta-level. They're functional, viable units in the Terran army. They compliment various builds. They have specific weaknesses. And the stats are not so overpowering currently that they win everything.
Any tweaking beyond this is something that needs a long, hard Beta test to work out. Premature balancing leads to the death of interesting concepts.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Its 2+4+4=10 Barrels, 2 armcannons at the sides, 4 flak cannons on front and the 4 Artillery ones.
The only issue I have with the current Thor is it´s ability, otherwise Nicol nailed it. I´m not really concerned with "Mass Thors" Kim only had 4 at a time...
Regarding Marauders: Power and massive HP are actually a tradeoff. Marauders demolished their Targets because they used Stimpacks and were later on fried by Psistorm. Without Medics the HP loss from Stimpacks is actually a drawback (finally). Terrans will have to learn to be less drugaddicted.

Well its not really cool if its mediocre. What Im saying its mediocre because the year is 2500 (not primitive), and a giant advanced looking mech like the thor needs something better than shells. its obvious the terran could easily implement energy weapons for this unit just like the wraith and battlecruisers have it. And its definitely not protoss if it has energy weapons, but if that is the reason why the thor has projectile weaponry instead of energy weaponry then that's too bad for the thor. I can't believe you sacrifice the thors weapon choice just for gameplay uniqueness and diversion among the three races. Again the bc and wraith have it in sc1, and they were never look alien or protoss at all.
Also blizzard or some fans think shells and projectiles is badass, i agree but not for this unit. Too much exaggeration with terran projectile weaponry is mediocre. Might as well give the battlecruisers uver flying canon balls.
Compared to other sci-fi mechs the thor is easily worthless even for its size to other mechs even smaller ones which have multiple weapon types which include energy weapons.
Hye Im actually trying to save the thor mech here. The thor needs an impressive weapon which you actually see. Right now it just looks like a giant marine with dual huge shotguns.
Slow has nothing to do with what type of weapon it can carry. Slow moving large vehicles or mechs are awesome.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Dude quit spouting your obsession with the Thor like it's a fact. Yes, we all know you're obsessed with giant walkers and energy laser beams and whatnot, however, this isn't Starwars k? Terrans don't use lasers k? They use big ass guns with big ass shells and that's how they kill their enemies, not with mass lasers.
They're guys who love guns and big explosions, not high tech nerds like those Trekkies.
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
says who? its not like you and other fanboys know what the exact terrans are about.
If you think they are all that and exaggerated then might as well hate the bc lasers and its ability to warpdrive, hovering vulture ala starwars motor bike, wraith lasers, teleporting beacons, the ion canon, etc.
The terran have laser and you know this. Its just a matter of choice where to put it on, and the thor is a clear candidate. Its huge, powerful, advance, and has all the parts to handle it.
Its the future and its sci-fi, giving the thor energy weapons does not make the terran less of a gritty man and more of a nerd.
They use bullets and shells because its practical, still usefull, and resourceful. But they can always use lasers and energy weapons when utmost needed just like the bc needs to have. This might as well be applied to their most powerful ground unit like the thor.

That argument works both ways.
I was going to post a paragraph detailing how a laser drains much more power than conventional ballistic weapons, and thus is more efficient for the Thor, but that would only lure the "It's a sci-fi game!" response.
Instead, I am agreeing with Nicol Bolas, pure.Wasted and Pandonetho.

You know, I'm getting sick and tired of seeing this anime mentality applied to the Thor. I don't like the unit, but I KNOW that adding LAZZERZ! and NARUTU BLAZTZ! ain't going to make it better. And energy weapons are so inherently better than shells, it would take a blind man to not realize that they're oh so much better?
Besides the fact, of course, that shells work well for artillery, given that they can fire in an arc? Or be guided after firing? And pack as much energy as a laser in the first place?

Hey! Why are the Terran Marines still using SOLID SLUGS for their Gauss rifles? Get them some lazerz man! They're fighting with 500 year old technology!
OH MY GODZ! WHY ARE WE DEPLOYING ACTUAL PEOPLZ TO THE FRONT LINES! GET THE ROBOT ARMIES UP!

Which would suck, given that the Battlecruiser and the Wraith BOTH fight up in space, where long engagement distances necessitate the speed-of-light lasers.
Since the Thor is a surface unit, meant to dish out overwhelming firepower on an unsuspecting base, the shells work fine.

Not counting Japanese Anime/Manga, other universes have lasers because they have lasers. Oddly enough, the Rules of Cool, which say how much damage a given weapon system will do, do not apply across franchise boundaries.
Let's take an example of what I hope you are referring to. The Star Wars AT-ST, much smaller than the Thor (I believe. That thing was kinda lanky) was equipped with dual laser cannons.
In Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, we saw it blowing apart trees, but not much else. Sadly, whatever utility it might have had against feral teddy bears was diminished by the Stormtrooper Effect, where the Emperor's best legion was defeated by the aforementioned teddy bears.
The AT-ATs, despite being larger (possibly larger than the Thor, in height) with more room for power sources and larger weapons, were curiously deployed without artillery or air support.
And so, their weapons, though formidable, did not do the damage that a modern day artillery shell would have done.
Though long and not quite pertaining to the conversation, my point is thus:
Lasers may look KEWL! to an anime fanboy, but that doesn't mean they are going to perform better than artillery shells in the arena where artillery shells are used. Besides, a lot of people prefer a huge artillery gun over a little laser with a huge cooling system. I know, it's hard to believe, but you must try to understand.

Because all of a sudden, it's become an either-or battle. Either use 17th century cannon balls, or Trekkie (Because everybody KNOWS that Star Trek is so much better than any other sci-fi franchise) laser arrays.

Can I point something out to you?
This is Science Fiction. It is not the future. It is not the future. It is not the future. Repeated in case you somehow didn't understand it the first time around.
If this was the future, autonomous robots would be doing the Terran's fighting for them. If this was the future, biological Terrans would not exist, because all of humanity would have uploaded themselves into computers by now.

Again, the Thor doesn't exactly NEED lasers, as opposed to more practical weapons such as artillery shells and rail guns.

I completly agree with this. Keep the motherfuckingly big ass shells and the explosions! Energy weapons can, sometime, be cool but you know, they should only be used by the Protoss so that we keep more diferences between the races. Terran = shells, Protoss = lasers

Wow this is unreal, I Just disproved that damn comment, and you come in and say the same thing.
Battle Cruisers use fricken lasers, and until it doesn't, stop saying that lasers are protoss. The lasers between the races are completely different anyway, so lets drop the general word "lasers", and move on to like Psi Energy Beams are protoss...
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
I love the thor's default attack to be honest. It's pretty meaty and powerful. If it were just a laser, it would just be like "pew pew"....pretty anticlimatic for such a big unit.
If you notice, terran lasers tend to be small bursts (battlecruiser, wraith), not thick beams of energy like the colossus or nullifier. And supposedly, the main reason the bc and wraith even have lasers is because they have the reactors capable of powering it, while ground units typically don't (especially when you can have two big ass guns that do much more damage at lower cost).
I still think the thor design could use tweaking - maybe a different cockpit design, or a less stumpy silhouette - but overall I'm liking the unit.

Just because we say "Terrans use shells" doesn't mean I'm going to expect the SCV to use a drillbit to extract minerals. They do HAVE access to "higher" tech, but unless that is somehow central to the concept of something -- minerals are defined by their sturdiness, that's why everything's made out of them -- there's no pressing need to change things up.
Besides that, as I was saying, the Thor isn't simply ANOTHER example of what it is to be a Terran unit... it's practically the BEST example there is. I think it encapsulates the Terran identity better, as a single unit, than almost any other that exists. So even if it might be OK in some case to upgrade a unit to higher tech to make it look cooler, when we're talking about one that has such out-of-the-box visually iconic status, that doesn't sound appealing at all.
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
*sigh*
all this is useless. While I'd like to have Thors be less massable, Siege tanks a bit more massable and I don't understand why marauders were introduced when they could have added a cool ability to the reaper... or forget it, I just Don't know!
Blizzard: Let the beta start for God's sake!
Let's start Operation CWAL for StarCraft II.

It's a very rough distinction. This is what it boils down to:
If every Protoss unit in the game used some form of laser, other than being unimaginative, would that really stand out as contradicting the identity of the race? No. Probably 75% of them already do, especially if we count Zealot/DT Lightsabers, and Archons who basically attack with pure energy.
If every Terran unit in the game used some form of laser, other than being unimaginative, would that really stand out as contradicting the identity of the race? Probably. I'm not gonna throw out absolutes here, but Blizzard would have to work damn hard to make those lasers seem redneck and grungy, because not every unit is a Battlecruiser. That's why the Vulture worked so well -- yeah, it hovered, it was also piloted by a redneck biker, and it looked beat up.
Like I said, it is a very rough idea, but at the base there is something visually distinctive about the weapons these races use, just as there is something visually distinctive about their units/buildings' appearances.

There is a distinctive difference between the protoss's Blue glowy energy, and what the terran have as a reddish/orange hardly glowy lasers. That represents two different power sources, which I think significantly makes them different.
At the end of the day, i dont really care about this topic, so I really dont want to go further into why psi-weapons arent the same as weapons that don't use psi energy. If the energy source is different, and the appearance is different, I don't really see how they can be the same, or even close to the same. So in my opinion:
Psi-lasers = protoss
Reactor powered lasers = Terran.
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Just to make it clear, I've never said "lasers are Protoss"
And yes, battlecruisers use lasers and so do wraiths, but that was already answered, most of their units consist of big ass guns and explosions. It's their identity. Of course when you move up to space, you're going to need to have higher technology because space is dangerous.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
the only thing that needs to be fixed is the thorr needs a more distinct projectile animation to separate it from other artillery units like the marauder.

The Marauder isn't an artillery unit, and their attack animations are very different. One guy shoots big missiles, the other guy doesn't.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Deffinition of laser: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. So its some sort of high energy light
Actually protoss are not using lasers a lot:
Probe: Particle Beam --> i.e. not a light beam i.e. not a laser
Zealot: Psi blade --> Energy from his head i.e. not a laser
Stalker: Particle disrupter --> Blow up the foundation of matter itself i.e. not a laser
Disruptor: Force Beam --> ok we can say we found some sort of «laser»
Immortal: Phase disruptor --> Like the particle disruptor, but even more weird
Colossus: Twin Thermal Lances --> Beam of ion warmed by psi energy
Phoenix: Energy Beam --> we found a laser?! No, psy energy
Void Ray: Prismatic Beam --> some weird toss tech that concentrate the void itself into a crystal and shoot it.
Dark templar: Warp blade --> Warp the space into itself... and I think it hurt...
Carrier: Interceptor --> Maybe lasers... but more probably ion cannons
Mothership: Rift Burst --> Aka: wut? but anyway not a laser
Si lets figure out: all these ranged are beam like, but deffinitly no protoss unit shot lasers
And the only units in the whole games (sc1 and 2) with «laser» denomination are Battlecruisers, Wraiths and ghost when targeting a nuke.
So lasers belong to terran, and «psi beam» to protoss.
-
Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Gt, you don't want to bring question of what technically constitutes a "laser" into this. Because nothing in SC1 acts as a "laser". The fact that you can see it at all shows that. Seeing it as a bolt flying out of a BC or Wraith also is 100% wrong.
So no, nothing in SC1 is technically a laser. However, that's not what's important. By "laser", we were clearly talking about energy weapons, rather than bullet weapons.

Honestly no one gives a damn if it's an ion cannon or cat piss. The point is that visually you see something that looks like a laser even if it's not technically a laser and so they are the "laser" race.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
I've always preferred Protoss using blue colored beam weaponry. The Colossus using red beams irks me, but whatever.
As for Thor, I don't mind its current armament, but I'd prefer if it had weaponry far different from Siege Tank. The shelling is already covered, it should have a heavy chaingun (DoW Heavy bolter style?) or a flurry of missles (Valkyrie style?).

They're thermal lances, it wouldn't make much sense to have them as blue.

Re: THOR and MARAUDER FIX
Everyone can identify that red = hot.
It's not supposed to make "chemical sense" it's just supposed to look appealing to the masses.

Sad but true.

Blue would still be hotter and every other Protoss beam is blue so imo it would make more sense if it was blue and would look also better.
