Marine's in Starcraft don't have the technical mindset to sit and monitor equipment. This is why they are marines, and frontline soldiers, rather than pilots for example. Turrets are considered to be automated missile turrets, the problem is I believe they have a Civilian inside to make sure the equipment works.
There aren't civilians involved in military operations. Not even the engineers, and certainly not the pilots, not even the cargo ones. That doesn't means that people operating any kind of equipment are raw soldiers without any kind of special training. Take a look at this for a list of all specialities under the Marines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...rine_Corps_MOS

You win, I was completely wrong. Marines are definitely whats manning those turrets. There is absolutely no way a terran civilian could be in the turret. Also, any military member is called a "marine" just as DS said.

Mahn, I go away (uncharacteristically, mind you) for a few hours, and look whut happinz.
Thats from an old thread on the Blizzforums about whether or not there was somebody actually manning the turret - the wire frame (and even the model) appears to have sombody inside; there are clearly a little pair of 'legs' hanging from the 'seat' - Anyway, long story short, endless thread - half for - half against.......which really ended up being half joking.....half not getting the joke.
Truth is, no one in there....but the idea of a little missile turret, 'dude' just wildly spinning away waiting for battle against a sky full of Mutas was just too funny.
The pic is a still from some old footage of a Russian test pilot going through G force training - I wanted to loop the video in the sig, but no go.
.....and there we have it. :)
.
You're welcome. I always thought your signature was full of lulz.

Holy shit! they must be kidding to have put a guy in the spinning part of the missile turret! I always thought Missile turret's were at least remote controlled by the crew from command centers! It must be a joke like the fish in the Inmortal's tank!
Anyways, I want Blizzard to confirm this issue, in fact I want them to confirm lots of things. For instance, real life unit's size. I remember a thread in which Pandonetho was asking for the size of the Mutalisks... this is what I answered thus killing the discussion:

I wish Blizzard made something like that!
We don't have much information about unit sizes other than this:
SC1 Unit Stats:
Protoss
Terran
Zerg
Here, the only clue we can get is that Mutalisk's size is "S" which must be "small" while Wraith and Scout are "L" which must stand for "large"
And this is the last post, mine, the last: the wish punished:

I think we must ask Blizzard for official information, we are just making conjectures without reaching the real truth behind the wide variety of "evidence" all the cinematics, pictures, etc represent.
no need to close "/thread" , nobody has posted on that thread again. (at least untill today 08/10/09)
I hereby propose we ask Blizzard for official information.
Re: The Complete History of StarCraft II Changes
In game unit size classifications are not indicative of size at all. It's merely a gameplay mechanic.
Mutalisks are classified as small, so are marines. A 3 size classification is in no way any indication of the size of something.

This isn't about winning a discussion, this is about reaching the right conclusion, when that's possible.

I think it's a joke. There's not even need for the missile to rotate, not to mention the operator :). The radar is the only thing that needs to rotate.

I know, it's just the few information we have. we lack of real info.

Like Norfindel says , I hope it's just a joke, similar to the fish in the Inmortal's tank.

I think the same thing.

I want an official explanation to the Missile Turret Issue.
I want them to give official sizes to each and every single unit including ships, buildings and everything in the Campaign Editor.
Has any of you seen this page? STARSHIP DIMENSIONS
Once again I must say

I was kind of looking forward to that actually, too bad they couldn't make it work.

I forget the exact way it worked, but it was something like that.
Re: The Complete History of StarCraft II Changes
I could've sworn the Firebat was not available at BlizzCon 2007, but only later, in fall.

Firebats definitely weren't at BlizzCon 2007. I think they appeared in fall or winter 2008 (to early 2009) but were replaced by marauders by March 2008.

Re: The Complete History of StarCraft II Changes
BTW guys, at the July press event, I made it a point to zoom close up on the missile turrets, and yes, there is a person in there. With the graphics of the original game, there's no detail so it's hard to tell, but with the new graphics, it's plainly obvious that there is a person in there. Sorry, no screenshots until the beta's out, so you'll have to take my word on it.
Re: The Complete History of StarCraft II Changes
Great, this'll be SC's inside joke....like cows in Diablo.
There is no, 'Missile-turret-guy' level. :)
700!

It's also clear in the original SC1, as other user pointed "once you see it, it's quite hard not to recognize it!"
and I used to think it was the turret's radar antenna... heck it was his leg! the turret's guy's leg! Blizzard pulling my leg for almost 10 years!

hey! I never played diablo, does it have anything to do with "there is no cow level"? if it has, could you explain it to me please?
About the turret one, I keep hopes it will be as you say: the SC's inside joke, like the fish in the Immortal's tank.

If you can't see it in the picture I posted, try comparing it with the wire frame I posted earlier. he is in the same place!

I don't remember all the details, but it started as a phony rumor about a secret level in the original Diablo. Something about clicking on a cow a million times in order to access it. This site has some decent info.
