Hmm......good question.
Well, we need something like this for recreating Brood war or the original starcraft.
Yeah that would make sense in order to recreate BW.
Also it would be nice to have for other maps as well.
I wouldnt see why they wouldnt add it in.
It was in the original if i remeber correctly.
There was confirmed information that they had a project that recreated the original BW in the first year of when the game went public. Due to engine changes, however, it faded into the past. This would further support some sort of briefing rooms.
If you're going to go through the effort of recreating the original, I would hope that you would at least improve the briefings. They didn't have much choice in SC1 when they reduced everything to talking-heads. Those making a remake do have a choice.

I believe the question at 4:50 from Blizzcon 8 references a Brood War Conversion. I've listened to it multiple times and I believe that's what they were talking about.
If map makers have acces to the "Hyperion scene", I hardly see why people would want the old brefing room from the original. We know we can spawn screen with protraits in it, just fix a camera in the hyperion and spawn screens to have the same kind of discussions.
Maybe someone could make multiple briefing rooms for the different locations in the original starcraft campaigns.
Here are some examples I thought of:
Terran:
UED flagship Alexander(SP?)
Magistrate's office
Hyperion's bridge
A Command Center
Zerg:
A Hatchery.
On one of those Space-Whales(Leviathan?)
Underground.
Protoss:
Gantrithor's Bridge.
A Nexus.
Citadel of the Executor.
A dark templar buidling on Shakuras.
We aren't talking about the original briefing rooms in Starcraft being in Starcraft II, we are wondering what would SC2 briefing rooms be like if Blizzard has made some or do map-makers need to make one themselves. Your Idea sounds good.
If someone is going to remake the campaigns they need to make 2 versions:
1) A carbon-copy of the original game w/ 100% focus on accuracy, for people who just want Blizzard's exact version of the events.
2) An improved version which uses story space instead of mission briefings and incorporates all known retcons.
It's not necessarily twice as much work either - the first version could be used as a great starting point for the second.
I had been thinking it could be done also including some "new" stuff. Like in game cut scenes emulating the pre rendered scenes SC1 had... I wonder if such a thing is also possible, since now we can manage things like FPS, we can now add a "sub mission" to the "REVOLUTION" mission, in such a way that we use kerrigan and infiltrate inside the antigan command center and (instead of just the sound of gunfire) playing as kerrigan kill the confederate officer(I hope her non infested unit appears in the editor for that to be possible, otherwise another female ghost would do.). I was wondering how powerful will the FPS management be, if it's enough to enter buildings, drop-ships and such and being capable of interaction it should be not only amazing but impressive!
I hope all those things I Imagined are possible, I'm willing to help mapmakers to re-create StarCraft & StarCraft:Brood War with the Galaxy editor once SCII is out!
Good point. Use first-person shooter in Installation levels would be nice, though hard to do for Kerrigan in the Zerg Campaign. We could also use some of the Flash-back cinematics that Blizzard has shown. I however am not that good with the map edito(In WC3, I made a battle that was based off of 300 using orcs for spartans, thats about it), but I'll start learning with the Galaxy editor.
We could make bonus levels using some of the books that were going on at the same time of the campaign like Queen of Blades or Speed of Darkness.
I think it should be possible to make those hunter killers (I do hope all hero units from SC1 are in the editor) follow kerrigan and defend her automatically... and with a command make them wait and burrow so you could solo cloacked, things like that, as if it were counter strike with boots...
I even hope we can do things a la SC: ghost! (you know, find a "empty" unit i.e. a goliath with no pilot and start using it!)
Thats a good idea. You could still make a Hunter killer if they don't include them by raising the stats of Hydralisk and calling it a Hunter Killer and by giveing it the color red.
They should have it in there though.
Right, that's why I wonder what will we do about Tassadar, Gantrithor or other hero units, I do hope they'll be there in the editor.
it could be the same campaign, same maps but you just have to choose "game mode"
i.e "normal"=carbon-copy of the original game w/ 100% accuracy
"Expanded"=An improved version.
Everything could be in the same map (each one), thus being less work and just a "game mode" option!
I don't remember well... but I think I heard you would even be able to mix map tile-sets!
While I think that some maps (bonus levels & such incompatible) will be unable to be joined into one, most of them will just need a "game mode option" thus reducing trouble quite a lot!
That would help, and Yes, you can mix tilesets.
Most likely, you will be able to make a map with a starting tile (such as dirt) and then when you actually mould the terrain, you can choose different tiles under various categories, which are the tilesets. This would make it so you could either make entire map themed to one category or mix and match different tiles to make a very unique map.
Just imagine mixing Jungle and Ashworld.
I don't want a carbon-copy version of SC and BW. I'd rather the updated story space. It would help give the player a sense of the real scope of the action, I think.
One thought I had, along this vein: It would be nice if there was a field camp or the like as a story space. A fire, tent, pre-fab structures, bunkers off in the distance, a setting sun putting a heavy twilit pall over the field, marines in the distance setting up their gear and mounting their suits.
What I'd like to know (and this technique may be useful in a Bridge setting as well) is how much control the map maker has over the background elements. Say, for example, the Hyperion is near Red Stone. Can you add battle cruisers in the background? Explosions and dog fights? What about changing the color, creating a nebula? For the encampment, maybe you can add Protoss or Zerg structures in the distance, just this side of the horizon. A blue glow permeates Protoss territory, a green mist enveloping zerg ground.
So many possibilities. :D
That's what I would like myself. If anyone remembers Goldeneye, it was always silly to be captured by the enemy and then upon completion of a task it would take you to a debriefing as if you were safely back home. Having some various scenes for briefings would be nice. Also, there are some cases where the pop-up screens wouldn't always be good.
Ships in the background for the First person mode? That was in Halo 3 and I loved the Idea. I like the way you describe the scenary as well. Now, I want Starcraft II more.
I would like to play both the original and the expanded. Maybe after SC2 comes out, it could be the site's project. To make a great recap of SC1 and BW with First-person battles and much greater detail. Though I doubt it would happen. Most likely a single mod or map maker would take the job on himself.
It'll probably work like WC3.Quote:

You have one tileset that you choose and start with, then you can pick and choose from other tilesets and import tiles from those.
With a maximum number of tiles possible. (For map size reasons.)
Yeah, they couldn't remake brood war. It'd def. need to be put into line with the quality of current games.
This is a remarkable idea, something to think about. I've seen awesome and inspiring ideas in this thread, but I think we must organize ourselves, as a community, so Star Craft legacy's mapmakers, debuggers and testers, will volunteer to give birth to such a great project:
Star Craft legacy's team (since there should be a team) will take the endeavor to remake StarCraft and StarCraft: Broodwar.
I hereby, offer my help to work with the galaxy editor (once SCII comes out) to be part of what could be quite a masterpiece!
...
I just hope I'm not just being too enthusiastic ...
You should be able to easily recreate the briefing rooms with custom UI. If you remember from the original announcement trailer, large 'talking head' portraits pop on the screen. If you can get several of those on the screen and plop an image in the background you can probably make it better than the original SC:BW.
I think, if the expanded version gets made, that as a sort of in-joke, the very first level (ie, the tutorial, if it's redone) has the classic briefing, then the second level (where you meet Raynor) starts off like this, and half-way through, pans around to the Magistrate.
Anyone ever had Chinese Lemon Chicken?
I think I have, Noobonic. Good stuff. I've got a pretty nice recipe stashed away for special occasions... ;)
Haha, it'd be funny if they continued on with that theme, or expanded on it. An easter egg/cheat allows you to have the camera pan back, away from the adjutant, to reveal it making a whole series of lemon chicken dishes. :D
I really would like someone to tell me about this Chicken thing.
Oh, That. I haven't seen that in years.
