Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
Thor showing on the bottom is awesome.
Besides I could see tanks fitting inside. not a thor.

He means, visually. Two tanks are a lot bigger than the dropship sprite.
So by extension, if the tank is actually smaller in comparison to the dropship...maybe the Thor is as well.
Personally, though, I do really like the underslung Thor concept. For the other races, if they need their huge units to be transportable for the campaign, they should do it like this: for the Ultralisk, the dropship simply lowers chains and lifts it. The Colossus would work the same way, but it would tuck it's legs up.
For the other races, I second the idea that the Prism would vibrate and emit some slight "charged up" energy animation to indicate it's carrying a Colossus. The Ultralisk would be suspended underneath an Overlord, or perhaps even grab onto the Overlord with it's mandibles.

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
"when clearly an SC1 dropship can't carry 2 tanks or 4 goliaths"
"yes it can"
"my point exactly"
lol what? That doesn't even make sense.

I see, I'm just not used to deciphering bad English.

Why? Is a Phase Prism somehow restricted to carrying only one Colossus? If that's the case, it used to not be.
Remember: this is purely a visual mechanism for dealing with the visual discrepancy between Medivacs and Thors. If an Ultralisk can come through a Nydus without question, it can come out of an Overlord without question. And they're certainly not going to stop Ultralisks from going through the Nydus.

Sorry? The English is just fine, I'm talking about the reason why they have a Thor actually under the Dropship (becasue it couldn't possibly visually fit in it), vs the fact that 2 tanks couldn't possibly visually fit in it. L2Problem solve and stay on topic.
There is 0 need for the Thor to be displayed under the Medivac, and if you say: "Well it's because it's so big!", well then you have already proven my point.
(And if you can't figure it out, the SC1 dropship didn't have an animation for units that obviously couldn't fit inside it, so why would the SC2 Dropships need it?... They don't...)
If they started messing with things because of realism the game would start to become unfun.

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
Proportion in SC is irrelevant. As is proven by large units like BC's and Carriers being the size of a small group of Marines, and those Marines being able to kill the BC or Carrier.
The MedEvac, Prism, and Overlord should be able to carry one Thor, Ultra, or Colossus without any visual changes.

ty lol
Basically what I was trying to say..

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
I think underslung unit transportation should be left for massive class ground units. So basically one for each race(Thor, Colossus, Ultralish)

Well, mainly because I think it would be cool, not that it would be necessary. :D
So you're saying you could carry, what, 2 Colossus at once? That's pretty good if so.
-
Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
Well, in IIRC, in one of the Sonkie vs Yellow matches, Yellow had 2 colossi in a phase prism.
I really don't think it's necessary to limit the colossus to one per phase prism. After all, it just gets turned into data, and I don't think 1 Colossus can do much anyway (to an aware player, it'll probably devastate a noob player's mineral line).

Colossus are pretty good by themselves anyways, they almost don't need a Phase Prism because they can just walk over mostly anything. Only time you really need them is for water/space/etc

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
I would lawlz if the Ultralisk can retract its head spikes and act as foot cups for the Overlord's appendages.
Dangling by six threads FTW.

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
Mostly because the Thor is a massive class unit. Tanks and goliaths aren't massive class. It's easy to imagine the Dropship having vehicle bays. However a the Thor itself is larger than the Dropship.

1 Tank sprite wise is as big as a Dropship, and 2 would never fit visually.
-
Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
That's not the point. it's not about in-game scale. It's about in game lore. I can imagine 4 goliaths and 2 tanks fit in a dropship. A Thor in the lore IS larger than the dropship. I always imagine dropships to have vehicle bays for the longest time. Are you telling me Dropships have no vehicle bays?
-
Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
I like this idea.
The Campagin has Hercules dropships, big enough to carry three Thors. Is this a unit you can use or just for you to destroy?

No I agree they do and it works for out of game, but I think there should be no "different" animation for transporting the Thor just because "it's big". Giving away what your Dropship is carrying.

But it will be beneficial when your scout locates a dropship with a Thor in it. It allows you to know which Dropship is the best target.

yes but shouldn't you have to scout the tech? by having them approach you with the dropships you will know whats coming, it almost feels like they're are making you give out more information that you have to imo.

Agreed. Love killing full Dropships :D

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
Considering that the Thor is probably a very dangerous thing to drop. I guess ginving the opponent the ability to see it is beneficial. "But how about the reaver? It's also a danfegous unit for drops!" The revear in comparison is a very fragile unit. the Thor is a 400 HP monster who can stay on the ground safetly and take hits. Imagine the Dropship micro with a Thor. Not only does it have huge HP, dropship micro can make it nigh unkillable. I would say would not be so unfair to show your enemy that you have a Thor en route.

I agree with the dancing with a Thor and Dropship would be dangerous, but that's why they have the dropping animation, so the showing off the Thor still feels like too much with this.

That doesn't matter. I can imagine that DropShips are big enough to store a Thor in its bays too. People can imagine all kinds of things.

The Reaver had a combined 200Hp. And Shuttles could carry two of them. Thus equal to 400Hp.

Of course, it's called a Hercules Class Dropship.

Shields don't count as HP, as they take 100 percent damage from everything.
Anyway, they have something the Thor doesn't, an attack that can raze groups of units to death in a shot or 2. The Thor can only shoot 1 target at a time anyway, or bombard 1 target.
-
Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
Of course, you have a point, but IMO for me its mostly flavor for Massive units. For a unit that can take out SCVs in one shot and can survive a heavy beating, I would be glad to see it coming.
@ Nicol
But Dropships CAN store tanks inside them and are bigger than tanks and goliaths. The Thor is in all aspects larger than a dropship.
-
Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
It can take out SCVs in one shot yes, but remember how slow it attacks.
All the SCVs would have run away at that point before you've managed to kill even 3 lol.
-
Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
But then, they wouldn't be mining would they? So basically you still ended up hampering their economy in one way. Also, the reaver's fragility also comes from how slow it is and relatively unreliable method of attack. If it isn't microed, it will be taking more damage than it dishes out. The Thor can be left relatively unmicroed and it can take care of itself. But I guess if Reavers were in SC2 the improved pathing would make them pretty broken huh?
I agree gameplay trumps lore, but doesn't mean they have to be devoid of all visual creativity.

I'm all for visual creativity I just don't want to give away what I'm carrying.
They should have to scout my buildings and tech for what I could be carrying.

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
It looks a though Massive units are now represented in a powerhouse unit fashion, almost hero-like...
I wouldn't mind if these units are displayed as visible cargo, if every race has at least one, it would be a great feature without overdoing it.

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
In light of this discussion, would giving detector units ability to see the contents of transports and bunkers be of any use?

If you click on an enemy structure, and it is in visual range of a detector unit you own, the transport/bunker contents will be visible as if you were the owner. Should work ComSat too I guess..
How about a general transport is loaded visual cue? I mean the Bunker already has a visual cue when it is loaded..

Yeah I could see that working out I would take that over the showing Massive units =P
But really that would be a good idea, I hope they try something like that out, although wouldn't it be kinda hard to select dropships if they were stacked?

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
I guess you should be given the option to be able to group select enemy units too. Is there any harm to that?

yeah but even if you do that for your own units it doesn't show the units in multiple ie dropships.

As far as I know, Colossus isnt massive, but they maybe changed that.
Also in Sonkie vs Yellow, Yellow transported as far as I know 2 Colossus, but there was slots for 2 more, that means 4 Colossus per Warp Prism which should be Fixed.

Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
A Marauder takes up 2 spaces in a dropship, why would a colossus take up an equal amount?
And it is massive, I don't remember it ever not being massive.
-
Re: Karune speaks on massive unit transportation.
Has anyone gotten a not outdated confirmation of how much space the Thor takes up?
