Speaking of the Hots intro, this is the best thing ever:
"On that first one if you zoom in you can see dozens of recurring pinkish structures; I wonder if those are where the fronts of sacs/zerg drop pods are sticking out...? Or they could just be some other spiky bits."
And if they weren't drop pods ? (If you know what i mean)
Robear, I suggest you should do the ued goliath from the sc1 cinematic; the one with the giant missile racks.
Activity always drops after I post...
Here an iamge of the "CGI" Zergling painting fro HotS CE, maybe you already had this...

And i have some questions about this picture:
https://bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms...4538813370.jpg
1)Are these StarCraft sizes realistic? Are they different from your Chart?
2)is really so small a siege tank? (I don't think so)
3)There is actually a difference between StarCraft, Warcraft and Daiblo design? Or they are all WoWish stuff?? I personally think that sc is well differentiated from wracraft, also diablo is well differentiated, good old dark fantasy with more believable armors imho
I believe this chart is accurate with Robear's scale. Mr-Jack works well with accurate scales (remember the zergling used as reference on his ultralisk work). I'll ask around at BlizzCon in a week, just to confirm.
Perspective makes the Siege Tank look small. IMO, I'm more concerned about Zagara and abathur.
From what I have heard, the lore department at Blizz loves your charts, Robear.
Also Phillgonzo said that to Robear.
I know that Sgt. Hammer has a tricky perspective... Maybe is not so small... I think that Zagara is overall ok, is Abathur that imho is extremely large... (i am going to buy Abathur for 10k gold, i wanted Nova, but i hate to camper for few hits ;p)
You will go to Blizzcon? So lucky!
It's not your fault, it's mine. I've been really busy with school and such. And it's not like I've done any new drawings in a long time, either. :( And then also I don't like to post when it's just like answering a 1-line question or something, because then if I actually did do some new artwork or find a new source and edited in the update, no one would see it. Now I'm writing this post because there's a bunch of stuff to comment on, even though I don't have anything new to show.
I've thought about it, back in the days when I was feeling a bit more overzealous. There's the normal SC1 version, the missile rack version, the SCG version, and the SC2 one. If I end up doing more drawings, I'll probably end up doing just 2, a SC1/Ghost combo and a SC2 version, so I probably wouldn't do the missile rack one for the main chart.Quote:

I didn't, that's great to see! Yeah, I actually don't have a copy of the HotS artbook, which is a little shameful. But I have looked at images from one, and while it's great they show the cinematic models of the zergling and baneling, I wish they did it for the overlord!Quote:

At first glance I assumed that image would just be a compilation of Mr. Jack's images without any realistic scale, like the in-game unit sizes, but I actually think they are meant to be to scale, or Murky wouldn't be so tiny, for example. Imo Stitches and Azmodan should be bigger!Quote:

My queens are a couple feet bigger than Zagara is there. And I agree that the siege tank is a little bit off... if we were going by the cinematic/realistic siege tank design.
But you have to remember that Heroes of the Storm has a much cartoonier style, and its siege tank has a comically oversized turret (plus rocket boosters that can pop out the sides, and a giant cannon that fires a missile the size of the entire tank.)
Here's a screenshot from the HotS intro where I copy/pasted the torso of a marine roughly alongside a tank onto the top of the turret, like Hammer's pose.
http://i.imgur.com/z6twL0T.jpg
You can see that, only looking at the turret, it's actually pretty close!
http://images.gameskinny.com/gameski...2f6d6bf1e7.jpg
The main difference is that the body of the Heroes of the Storm siege tank is super tiny. Just compare the two designs.
http://i.imgur.com/xCebsrb.jpg
http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2...roes_Rend1.jpg
Also I doubt a person is even supposed to sit in the turret of the SC2 version... It seems like that would be a place for storing ammo for the shock cannon or something, and the people should sit in the bottom, where the hatch was on the Ghost Arclite siege tank.
(also, interesting that they both have the number 54 on them...)
Overall, I like the Heroes' aesthetic, but I think it's most similar to Warcraft. Just because when I see a hero like Stitches or Anub'Arak, it really feels like they're purely an HD revamp of their WC3 models, which is great. Of course, they do use models direct from SC2 in the game too, and they don't feel out of place (zergling, ultra, 'roachling,' muta, nydus, banshee... And, one that bothers me, one of Raynor's ults is the Hyperion, but it just uses the shadow of a normal SC2 battlecruiser rather than the Hyperion model they introduced in Heart of the Swarm. Tsk tsk tsk.)
Eh, I'm not really bothered, partly because his original concept art shows him having a super long, big, snake-y body continuing on into the Leviathan... and then to have him walk around, they came up with that alternate little bug butt. Anyway, since all of him is above ground in Heroes, it's fine for him to be taller than he was when he was partly inside the evolution pit, and he's the kind of guy who would bulk himself and his armor up a little bit if he were going someplace unsafe.Quote:
IMO, I'm more concerned about... abathur.

That's great to hear! (Maybe I should ask them for some clearer renders of some of the cinematic models so I could do a better job? :P Or they could just release their own version with the models actually to scale...)
I would love it if some comic-book artist used my charts as a reference for sizes in an official comic or something. It's a definite possibility, because they do look at/get influenced fan art, if only by image searching.
That's all I've got for now. When I have more Starcraft free time in the near future, it'll go towards my cinematic thread. Let's all hope that Blizzcon brings us some LotV news!
(btw, nice playing with you the other day, TheBlade. ;) )
Still think if you do continue, eventually (3+ years from now, you should do some of the faction-exclusive varients, like the umojan marine, shadowguard, primals, evolutions, mercs and UED goliath. AFTER you do the Lotv units and are still motivated.
[
Yeah, that Umojan design is a funny one. When I first played HotS, I assumed that it was just a new helmet and some glowy extra pieces slapped onto a retexture of the standard marine model, but when you actually look at it, basically every piece was actually redone/modified in a new high-res model, even pieces like the foot and calf armor that never get shown in closeup anyway. Like, I would have expected them to just stick those shoulder add-ons on top of the normal shoulder armor, but instead they remade the model with spaces for the new parts to attach. Seems like a lot of work.
http://troyperry.com/wp-content/uplo...tationcomp.jpg
It really is as much of a different unit as some of the others I've done.
(Then for all of the Zerg variants, they just stuck on extra pieces instead of resculpting anything... oh well)
Edit: Woo, new LotV units! Biggest (literally) being the Spear of Adun, aka the Protoss Leviathan.
I'm trying to keep myself relatively spoiler-free for LotV, but I have watched all the trailers/videos that were just released. It looks like there will be story-mode Void Ray, Pylon, and Hybrid Reaver models, which is great— we'll finally have definitive sizes for them. And then of course there's all the new multiplayer units, Cyclone, Herc, Disruptor, and Ravager. Plus battlecruisers that can teleport anywhere. Whee.
Robear what do you think of the new LOTV units.
Also the terran reveal trailer has swan about 1.5x the height of the foot pads on the Viking in the armory.
Mostly fine. Lore-wise, I like the Ravager, I don't really like the Cyclone so much (because it seems like a robotic unit, and it moves so fast. imo the fast-moving, maneuverable terran units [vultures, reapers, hellions] should be piloted by crazy daredevils who are risking their lives driving so unsafely. Even though controlling those sorts of things remotely makes sense, I just like the idea of terran robotic units being slower and clunkier). The Herc is great, a big and clunky space suit with a grappling gun/tether seems like exactly the sort of thing some illegal terran salvager crew would have cooked up as a nonmilitary derelict space-salvage version of marine armor.
The Disruptor is whatever. Makes sense that they'd have a more efficient way of delivering explosions than having to make a scarab for each one. The model is just recycled from HotS' Replicant, I'm glad they found a use for it.
I'm more excited for the new campaign units... and the new information the campaign will give about the old units!
They show the Hyperion model alongside a bunch of Minotaur battlecruisers again! I think I will upgrade my Hyperion to Shadow Archon's size for it, it definitely looks significantly bigger than them based on this. (Which also means my Leviathan should get bigger too...)
http://i.imgur.com/CdBwnIn.png
Also, story-mode models of pylons (above), stalkers, colossi, void rays (which are much smaller than mine, which I figured was coming). And the hybrid reaver is in a cutscene.
The biggest thing (literally) is the Spear of Adun. Yesterday, when I first saw it, I thought it was a bit strange conceptually, because the way they described it made it sound like something the Mothership could have been used for. But then in the panel I watched today, they mentioned that it's large enough to "contain carriers, even motherships." So, okay then.
I like that finally they're not shying away from (at least pretending to have) a fixed scale for it, showing which part of it contains the bridge, etc. Also, look! They show it from above alongside little tiny minotaur battlecruisers.
http://i.imgur.com/vouXDHi.png
So, uh, it's gonna be like 5 to 10 times larger than the Leviathan. Of course, a lot of that is empty space, but still. Crazy big. Protoss reclaim their place as having the biggest ships around. Damn.
Edit: Here're the terran capital ships with the Hyperion scaled to ~1km in keeping with Shadow Archon's figures. Also, the Behemoth battlecruiser drawing has been overlaid with my 3D model to make it a bit better. Might still have to clean up some of the edges.
http://i.imgur.com/Bx9mXOP.jpg
That's what she said.Quote:

I think you should make the gorgon slightly bigger as well, It can take a battlecruiser crashing into it and 2 yamato hits, and is about 3.5x longer than in-game minotaur.
A 30-40% size increase should be in order.
EDIT:
After looking at the campaign mission map, including the hologram on the bridge, I think its safe to say the daelem ark and the kaldir shuttles are the same, especially when the DESCRIPTION for the docking bays says "houses specially designed ARK SHUTTLES for warp-conduit travel" Several aspects are the same, the general shape, the cockpit and engine sizes/placements and the hologram is essentially a mix between the 2 designs.
FYI Robear, according to the latest Protoss technology update, Colossi are some 17 stories tall.
Where does it say that? The NA server just says towering.
Right here.
Quote:
The Colossus, standing at over 17 stories tall, is a skyscraper of destruction.
Woah, that's awesome! My colossus is about 63 meters tall. If you assume 1 story = 12 feet, 17 stories = 204 feet = 62 meters. Which was totally my guess! Well, our collective guess, in this thread. I forget what original size I had it at, but it changed a few times.
(Of course, 'story' isn't an exact unit of measurement, looking on the internet I get answers saying a story is anywhere from 10 feet to 16, but, close enough.) We'll see if the LotV model matches up, but I'm feeling pretty good.
It's quite possible they took your measurements actually - I remember Phill Gonzales (a Blizz artist) saying that (paraphrased) "we're big fans of [Robear's] work." Think it was on Deviantart.
It wouldn't be the first time either - stuff I wrote for Augustgrad on the wiki was basically taken verbatim for Spectres for instance.
For truth? Like what?Quote:

"Lying on a desert plain with mountains to its north, the city is exceptionally expansive with the core of the city on higher ground than the outlying regions to the southwest on the banks of a river. The city became the capital of the Terran Dominion and during the Brood War the it was the most heavily fortified city in the Dominion."
Words more or less to that effect, it's around the time when Tosh and co. are moving in on the palace. It made me a bit uneasy since a lot of that was based on observation of the map layout and loading screen. But hey, Spectres canonized it apparently.
It ain't just that. When I submitted The New Order in one of Blizz's writing competitions, I included the idea that Augustgrad was named after Augustus Mengsk, an idea Blizz apparently liked when they confirmed it on Korhal's star system page.
Or more likely it's coincidence. But this kind of thing isn't too uncommon in fandom (see http://www.halopedia.org/URF#Production_note for an example). Another example was on ff.net, where an author copy-pasted the CnC wiki's Tiberium War articles as part of the background of his/her story. Still, I don't begrude Spectres, since there's only a few lines in question, and a wiki has no ownership of material after all.
^Pretty neat, although the Augustgrad thing probably feels like something they would have come up with anyway.
I'm gonna get back to working on new drawings soon. In the mean time, I just wanted to post that today Blizzard added a new Hydralisk model to Heroes of the Storm that looks absolutely great, so much better than the SC2 one they were using before. Sorry for the low graphics settings:
http://i.imgur.com/vbfDy6s.png
I'm drawing out some ideas for the Hurricane, an unused editor model, which was obviously built around parts of the old alpha version of the Minotaur battlecruiser, but it ends up having a very different overall look than any other battlecruiser design (no hammerhead, no narrow neck). There are also no references to a Hurricane-class battlecruiser afaik.
http://i.imgur.com/LlB4GVm.png
In the interest of greater variety in the terran fleet, rather than calling it a Hurricane-class battlecruiser and making it the same size as the Minotaur, I thought I might call it a Hurricane-class destroyer, and make it around 200m long. I don't think destroyers have been mentioned in any Starcraft media, but I like the idea of there being more ship options between tiny aircraft and massive battlecruisers. What do you think?
http://i.imgur.com/10AieZ1.png
I'll also draw the Wanderer-class "vessel" from the War Pigs comic. And that pirate capital ship from HotS.
Think it should be battlecruiser sized, as it was one of the battlecruiser specializations. And destroyers have been mentioned in a short story and a novel, albeit with no description.
Also what length are you going to make the wanderer?.
The Wanderer-class is a light cruiser. Early concept art for it was inspired by Serenity, so I'd guess it's comparable in dimension. The specs for Serenity are as follows:Quote:

The ship is 269 feet (82 m) bow to stern, with a 170 feet (52 m) beam, and stands 79 feet (24 m) high when landed.

The pirate capital ship is called a cerberus in the editor.
Destroyers are mentioned in one of the short stories, Acid Burns. They have hangars large enough to hold a fleet of medivacs, and nuclear silos. However, no physical description is given.
I think that mister Robear missed a a lot of new Zerg models on Heroes of the Storm :)

Don't forget about the beautiful Luxoria and Skeletal variantions
http://i.imgur.com/2LbHKRO.png
Those are soooo awesome. Would love to get those extracted for sc2 maps....
@Robear
In the interest of greater variety in the terran fleet do the sc2 science vessel, 250m would probably be the right size. Stetman says its a different class so that gives it grounds to be in this.
Yeah, the Luxoria hydralisk is gorgeous. It's sort of a shame that the new zerg art totally outclasses Zagara, just comparing the swirls and details in the hydralisk carapace to hers.
Well, there go my plans to make it smaller than a minotaur: the minotaur isn't big enough to contain a fleet of medivacs, just because so much of it is empty space. Something roughly minotaur-sized with a bunch of flight-deck areas added on though could be okay. Thanks for reminding me about Acid Burns.Quote:

"Krakulv Base, this is the marine Destroyer Victory. We have visual; please respond."
Quote:
"Looking kind of crowded down there, Major. Can we land a Destroyer in your bay?"
Lee swore under her breath. Krakulv hadn't been designed to handle a ship the size of the Victory. Nobody had thought it would be necessary. "Negative. Can you set down outside the walls?"
"Negative back at you. There's a blanket of zerg for half a klick in all directions."
"Did you already pick up our medivacs?"
"Affirmative, all present and accounted for."
"Then listen up. We have one medivac remaining here. Send three more down empty, then move into position over the base and give us air-to-surface artillery fire to buy us time."
On the subject of the Wanderer-class (General Lee from the comics,) I definitely get the Firefly inspiration sense, but I do think it's a bigger ship. They have a vulture crashing into a ramp on the underside in an escape (similar to Serenity's mule crashing into its cargo bay in an escape), and I think the ramps are similar sizes, but the Wanderer has a much larger ship built around and on top of that entry ramp than Serenity does.
-ramp on the bottom with a couple of guys and crashing vulture
-wide view of the bottom of the ship
I haven't actually read the whole comic, or if I have it was years ago. Anyone know if the ship has a hangar bay with any smaller ships inside it or anything? Otherwise I'll just throw a guess together. Also any pictures that show it better from the side would be nice.
(also, god those vultures need bigger windshields or those bikers need goggles)
Probably around 150-200 meters for the wanderer, and 250-300 for the raider science vessel.
2 Smaller ships for the terran fleet.
As for the destroyer, they are probably more space-efficient and carrier oriented then the battlecruisers. 400 meters-ish, sadly nothing to go on though.
Zagara model is from blizzcon 2013, They said that no more placeholder models will be used on heroes ... I think that sooner or later Zagara will have the Update that she needs heavily, same for Tyrael,Brightwing and Zeratul and few others
there is also a new model of locust on heroes, don't know why, but the mouth is completely different
Sort of tangentially related, I'm working on a roach model. Here is what I have so far along with most of my other models, all to the scale used in the most recent chart. Seeing the roach/hydra/ling trifecta next to each other is pretty nice.
http://i.imgur.com/NIyuPVK.jpg
Here it is finished, though no textures yet. It's a mix of the in game unit and HotS campaign design. This'll replace the old roach drawing in the chart, the main difference is the arms.
http://i.imgur.com/jnANyb1.jpg
I'm feeling real good about these sizes. You can imagine the way marauders fit in there, and how a roach would be much scarier to a marine than a marauder. Eventually I'll do one of those too, though no time soon.
-The current 3D priorities are the roach, a mutalisk, and finishing the overlord textures.
-The current 2D chart priorities are finishing the Odin, making a mockup of the Wanderer, and finishing the Koramund.
These are sick! Great job!
Are you rigging your models when you make them?
Thanks! Yes, although the reason I gravitated towards doing terran ships first was because they don't need to be rigged and are the simplest to texture. I can do very basic rigging and animation (here is the marine in motion, which I consider serviceable if not professional). It's just the texturing that holds me up. Here's the latest on the overlord, hopefully I can finish it off this week and put it in the Zerg chart.
http://i.imgur.com/YS9Us73.jpg
In case you intend on drawing the Spear of Adun, I found a good profile of the ship:
http://static.mnium.org/images/conte..._adun_lotv.jpg
Now, where this thing stores all those Motherships and Carriers, I have no idea. Look how spindly it is! But it's an obvious homage to an Eldar Craftworld.
Your model is nice, but try to keep in mind that the Roach is actually a slug that got armored - steroids and a lot of legs/theets, don't know if this can help you on dat ass of your roach
