I had to go the hospital where they gave me, through IV, prednisone (a steroid). I was then on a prescription of it for a long time. One of the side effects of this nasty little bugger is it makes your mind race.
I played a lot of SCII during that time, and I found that my game was improved. I felt like I could concentrate on more things than I usually could. In short I felt that I could multi-task better. Having now been off the drug for a while I no-longer feel capable of that level of multi-tasking.
So I submit that this type of steroid could be useful to pro gamers to improve their game.
Long Version:
So I have an extreme allergy to Poison Ivy. I get it easily, and I get it bad, and if it gets in my throat it becomes life-threatening. So last time I got it (a few months ago), it had caught a hold of my face and was spreading like wild-fire. I went to the emergency room and to combat the poison ivy they gave me through IV, among many drugs, steroids (prednisone); and then given a prescription to continue for 28 days.
One of the side effects of this nasty little bugger is it makes your mind race. I could not sleep for more than a few hours due to extreme exhaustion because this drug would not let me stop thinking. It had my mind racing so much I couldn’t go to sleep.
I being sick played StarCraftII a lot. I found that my game was improved. I felt like I could concentrate on more things than I usually could. I felt I could multi-task better. I say felt because I was under the influence of a drug and, as we all know with alcohol, a drug can make you think your good at something you’re not good at ^_^.
They're gonna start testing pro gamers' urine now.

Lolz. way to take it and run, guys.
On a more serious note, I have found at least part of Progamer's initial post to be true: playing more does make you more consistent more often. I hit more and longer hot streaks when I could commit a 4 to 8 hour time period to SC multiple days a weak. I would peak and win consistently until fatigue set in siginificantly. It also helped that I had time, even at my job in the spring, to youtube pro replays. My head was always in the game.
Fast forward from May to July in a new job where youtube is prohibited and I have had consistency issues in my playing. I still play nightly, but commit more time to 2v2 than 1v1. 1v1 is where I need more consistency though. I would not endorse this. Caffeine has a similar effect, btw.
