Are there traces in the tradition (novels) of Asian cultural aspects?
Apart from Valerian's swordplay, off the top of my head, a Japanese bistro is mentioned in Nova, Hartly, in addition to teaching martial arts (think karate specifically) has a Japanese proverb he keeps citing (Nana korobi, yaoki-Seven times fall down, eight times get up) and Ghengis Khan's empire is cited as one of the most innovative in Earth's history by Soohoo's history/propaganda lessons. Also recall Asian writing being spotted in concept art and I think in some marine profiles in WoL. Also remember Nova getting her history mixed up, thinking the Germans used kamikaze bombers in WWII rather than the Japanese
And yes, this is off the top of my head.:p
We've also got Somo Hung from SC: Uprising, who had a soft spot for Kerrigan. :P
Somo Hung, Jin-ho Lim and some other characters look Oriental and have Oriental names, but aren't otherwise different from other characters.
I suppose that far in the future, that far from Earth with no contact, that no Earth-based culture is likely to survive. Any ethnic groups would vanish, with new ethnicity being based on your planet of origin instead.
There's a few (eg the religious people on Bountiful from Speed of Darkness) who have managed to retain some culture, but only by isolating themselves as best as they could from the rest of the terrans. (And the culture of Bountiful might only exist in one character's mind, though it's kind of odd to resocialize a marine with "thou shalt not kill", if you ask me.)
Also, the people of Haji seem to speak with Jamaican accents and believe in a religion found in Haiti. I don't know if most are black though.
maybe not oriental but Tosh is big for voodoo and has that kinda accent (dunno how to describe it),master Myamoto (the martial arts teacher) and from the UED you have Alexi and his votka :D (and the russian accent) - if we talk about ''cultural differences'', and you got those fanatics for religion around saint pelagius (? something around that name)
and the rest mentioned above :)
(if we take the whole SC universe)
It's nice to know that. I need to read Ghost Academy soon, then.
thanks for the replies, very informative, and it seems that Western culture was the winner, had expected it currently has a strong influence, but I wonder if something like ethnic associations such as the criminal or other, could be introduced in starcraft. and the issue of religious associations is also interesting. I think in the history of the medivac, a nun was mentioned
In Uprising, Somo Hung's planet held numerous religious cults (Hung himself wasn't a member), and Ardo Melnikov from Speed of Darkness was an ardent Christian. A number of characters have expressed belief in god (such as Jim Raynor in the novels), and quite a few characters say things like "if there was a god, then this is hell".
Perhaps not the winner, but rather the losser of the Great War on Old Earth. Each of the Super Carriers which brought the Terrans to the Kropulu sector where identified as criminals in Old Earth. There was also this tendency to clean earth of impure beings.
Looking at the nature of the UED, they all look russian or from russian decent. If the Great War was similar to WW2 then the russians must have cleaned the western culture out of Earth (Probably nuked Asia first and then confronted the weak western powers, which surrendered and were forced to leave Earth).
Their top general was French, and the UPL picked English as their language. Perhaps Europe won.
We were told the more powerful nations fell (due to massive political and economic change).
That's a pretty broad generalisation isn't it? You're basing this off on one influential character that happens to be part of the UED. DuGalle does not sound like a Russian name nor does he have a Russian accent.
If that were true, how come the UED don't all speak Russian? It was made clear in the Terran backstory that the UPL made English the only language to be spoken in an attempt to remove cultural differences (even banning native languages of countries). This alone signifies that the UPL has some ties/origins to a more "Westernised" culture. I would highly doubt that if the Russian's won the last Great War for Earth they would then mandate a foreign language (to them, at least) be spoken as the only language.
This.
According to the backstory in the original manual, western civilization was on the decline around the late 21st, early 22nd century, ultimately collapsing on itself due to global sociopolitical/economic upheavals, with the UPL emerging from the ashes and picking up the pieces.
Most of the UED units had American accents. I'd say America won :D
New UED units:
1. Medic -> American accent
2. Valkyrie -> German accent
New Earth characters:
1. DuGalle -> French accent
2. Stukov -> Russian accent
Therefore, there is no single national majority amongst the new voices. At best, they're generally European.
General Mah Sakai, head of the Kel-Morian Combine, has a very asian name. Not much is known about this guy tho.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was some Asian culture in StarCraft. Seems to me that a lot of cyberpunk novels have a strong Asian presence, including those written by westerners. And sicne a lot of the people sent on the Colony ships were cybernetically or genetically augmented, why not?
Heh. Closest the Germans came were piloted V2s, used to ascertain the aerodynamic properties of that vehicle. The Americans came in, overran the testing grounds, and came to their own conclusions.
"Good Lord! A multi-stage piloted V-2 that could hit New York! The pilot could have bailed out and been picked up by U-Boat!"
I also seem to recall that the Cherry Blossom was German-designed...
I may be confusing Fanon with Canon, but don't Spectres use dolls to help concentrate on a target?
