Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
Why Duran sided with Kerrigan during Brood War? She's a big problem to his master, the Dark Voice, so why he helped her to win many battles during the Brood War. Why he didn't kill her, when he had a chance (an agent of the Dark Voice should be very powerful, more than any Protoss or Zerg)

That's an assumption and nobody really knows who Duran is working for. Check out the article me & kimera wrote for some other theories: http://sclegacy.com/editorials/6-spe...working%20for?
Though I don't suspect Blizzard has an explanation that will wind up making much sense, so theorycrafting is pretty useless. :/
PS: The theory is that Duran stole Kerrigan's research notes for how to create hybridized beings (such as herself). And then when he was done, he left Kerrigan.

Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
In addition, the Dark Voice wants to take over the Swarm and use them against the other races. I don't think the UED's intrusion helped with that plan, as it weakened the Swarm. Although one wonders if the Second Overmind would have been under the Dark Voice's control too.
One wonders if Kerrigan will even mention Duran in Heart of the Swarm. Maybe she'll have forgotten him, and will get a rude reminder.

You have to think about the timing of Duran's presence. When we first see Duran, he sides with the UED in taking out the Dominion, who was the dominant force at the time with the Protoss homeworld in shambles. I'm still unsure if Duran was an independent agent at this time. Although he did try to destroy the Psi Disrupter, his actions did ultimately result in the UED taking over the second overmind.
One thing to bear in mind is that Duran's experiments were far from complete, if they had even been started yet. That's why Duran needed Kerrigan to survive. He needed the Zerg swarm to survive until the Hybrids could be born. There's no telling what would eventually happen to the Zerg in the hands of the UED, and if there were no other leader, they would've been picked off, brood by brood, by the Dominion and the Protoss. And the Zerg were needed for the Dark Voice's plans to be accomplished.

That confuses me. The advice that Duran provided was pretty limited. He did secure the Disrupter, but that was after convincing DuGalle to destroy it.
I think he served the zerg (rather than Kerrigan), but only in the short term. It is a bit strange, in retrospect, that he wouldn't have just backed a second Overmind. He could have made a fantastic adviser for it. (In fact, I could picture him doing that for a brood mother late in Heart of the Swarm.)

How so? He gave some help so that the UED could overcome the Dominion on Braxis and at the Dylarian Shipyards, but otherwise his actions involved inciting the destruction of the Disrupter, enabling Arcturus Mengsk's escape on Aiur, turning the UED leaders against one another, assassinating Stukov and attempting to destroy the Disrupter.

Wouldn't the Second Overmind be the ideal leader for the Dark Voice? Or failing that, Daggoth?

Best thing is to wait and see. All or most will probably answered.

If you recall, Duran gave a lot of help and vital information that established the UED as a dominant power in the sector. The turning point was his attempt at destroying the Psi Disruptor. If he had succeeded, the UED likely would've failed at capturing the second overmind, and Duran would have used it as the Dark Voice's agent. Since the second overmind was made up of the cerebrates of the original overmind, it can be assumed that this new overmind would still be influenced by the Dark Voice's directives. However, since the UED Captain's forces prevented the Psi Disruptor's destruction and captured the overmind, Duran's plan changed; siding with Kerrigan. The second overmind was killed, and the UED defeated. Now he just had slip away from Kerrigan's notice, which wasn't very difficult for him, and he was free to continue his experiments. Kerrigan wasn't a problem, because Duran already had a plan in place, or found one, to remove her from power (see WoL).

hmm...i like your theory about wol, a lot! :D and i agree with the post :)

Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
Lets hope you are correct ;) Or else it will probably just seem lame.
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
May be that the second Overmind wouldn't have a directive, and Duran found it better to side with Kerrigan, for some reason.
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
I'm pretty sure it would still be under the Dark Voice's directives, since the cerebrate were pieces of the original overmind, and it was these that made of this new overmind. If you use infected pieces to regrow a body, the body rebuilt would still have those flaws.

Where does it say that? I knew the Overmind created them but I didn't know it was specifically by separating pieces off itself. Until the Overmind made itself physically manifest on Aiur, I didn't think the Overmind had a physical body to begin with.

Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
Who do you think is more powerful between Kerrigan and Duran? At first look Kerrigan seems more powerful but Duran real power are unknown for the moment. Fooling the queen of blades isn't so easy. Anyway Duran has thousands years of experience and knowledge, and I think is psychic powers can match (or even surpass) an hybrid
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
In my personal opinion, Kerrigan could squash Duran like a bug in a fight.
But Duran is smarter and more devious, and wouldn't put himself in that position. (That might also let him mentally lie to Kerrigan.)
Incidentally, if anyone has ever read the awesome webcomic The Last Days of FOXHOUND, Kerrigan is Psycho Mantis and Duran is Revolver Ocelot.

Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
I have a feeling Kerrigan is nothing compared to Duran.

Not so much like tearing off an arm, but each cerebrate was created from the Overmind based off of an aspect of its personality so that it will be very efficient in the task it was created for, since each cerebrate had a different main objective for its brood. Also, the Overmind describes the cerebrates as its children as well, and along with the cerebrates being similiar enough to the overmind in order to create a new one, seems to be proof enough to me.

Good question, but unfortunately we don't know what Duran is, or his capabilities. I would lean toward Duran though. Whether he's a believable enough shape-shifter to fool Kerrigan, or something else; even if he wasn't as strong as Kerrigan in terms of raw power, his far greater experience would likely win him a 1-on-1 match-up.

Me too. I'm curious to see the real form of Duran....(99% of lore fans speculate that he's a shapeshiter xel'naga)

hehehee....gotta love errors :D anyways, to return to a good lore question - regarding the overmind - it had a physical form before manifesting on aiur - you can see his form while kerrigan is being born (zeratul missions) :)

Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
Duran might not be a shapeshifter if he's just possessing bodies.
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
If Duran just possesses bodies, does he only pick those with certain facial features? (Narud looks so much like Duran, it's like he suffered Michael Jackson disease over the course of 3 or 4 years.)
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
I reckon he holds auditions.
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
Whatever he does he's awesome and needs to come back for more manipulation:

I just hope they use the same voice actor.

They probably won't.

Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
Didn't they use a different voice actor for Narud? All they really need is someone who speaks with an accent, I think.
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
But that's okay, because they're supposed to sound different.
-
Re: Why Duran sided with Kerrigan?
If Narud changes form again, what role do you think he might play? He's been a scientist and a soldier.

One of the protoss leaders. Perhaps one of the (I believe it was) two we didn't see in In Utter Darkness. I remember someone mentioned they were suspicious of Shelak Tribe's leader.

Right, a lot of them are using sundrop, aren't they?
If he's not an aspect of Duran, I certainly think he's up to something.
Also, there's precedent for Duran to keep his distinct facial hair as a protoss. Remember Aldaris' epic beard?

That was me, but since Zekrath exists now... well, probably, I don't think Duran could be him. But could he be a Tal'darin in disguise? Well, you never know. Heck, Duran could even try to rescue Ulrezaj.

We don't exactly know how Duran assumes his guises. He could shapeshift, or possess them. If it's possession, he could jump from one to another at will. In addition, he could plant ideas in their mind for when he is not directly controlling them.
I believe that is how Kerrigan controlled Raszagal. Implanting ideas, though I could be wrong.

on the raszagal note,i think it was said it was imprisonment of her mind (dominance) not planting ideas, at least i dont view it as such a simple thing if you completely control someone
