"It's called LAN!"

That's what a BlizzCon attendee shouted out after Rob "answered" a question regarding the reduction of multiplayer lag in Australia. And of course, there was also that earlier incident where Rob asked how many people still play games offline and a little over half the crowd gave a resounding uproar of confirmation. After an insulting snort of laughter, he asked "Really?" and quite a few people shouted out things like "Yeah!" and "Yes!" and "All the time!" Asking why they didn't play online, a handful of people gave reasons, the only audible answer being "College." Then he proceeded to blatantly brush away those reasons by giving the insulting response, "Well, those five people will be able to play in offline mode."

Nice one, Rob -- real nice.

Even if I got to register it online, I guess I'll be very busy playing the campaign and map making... I don't think I'll even go into battlenet...
In fact I've never played SC1 in battlenet... only once... access to internet is not as fast here, it's expensive and there were lots of fun LAN games for me...

And if your college doesn't have wifi, your college just sux. This also doesn't stop 12 million WoW players.

And you're the minority. A very large portion of SC players got the game through LAN gaming. I know for a fact my LAN party did it that way, and I know of six other regular LAN parties in my area that did it the same way.

LAN is a huge part of PC gaming. When they have an actual good answer for why they took it out, I'll listen. Until then, it's just stupid.

Agreed. It would be nice to know when the Beta is coming...will take our minds off these issues.

Honestly, Rob should have avoided the discussion altogether. It was foolish of him to bring it up and query the audience, and Blizzard will never win this battle. This decision is understandable but clearly is upsetting a lot of people.

Personally I'm not affected by the lack of LAN, but it is kinda upsetting to see Rob acting this way. Up until now I've never seen Blizzard show signs of arrogance.

I think most of the complaining is due to fans getting stir crazy. So much hype and so little delivery makes fans edgy. A date would make everyone happy. Then they can play bnet and see how good it will be.

Same here. My web is fine, but I feel strongly for those who don't have it.

As I said, I played SC1 in Battlenet Only once...
All the time it was LAN with my friends around here... I don't know you guys, but I feel a little... discouraged because of this issue...

Cable internet has become soo affordable these days. Don't tell me you don't have 30$ (read: 1$/day) to spend a month on internet cable, but you have a $100-$150 or more to spend on other crapshit college students often throw their money at... Seriously... -__-;;

How much of a multiple (indiv or compounding) are you talking about? Not everything is the same on all countrys, i remember the person sayd that Battle.net was way too lag for australian to actually play a decent game.

The piracy issues have been discussed on other threads, they are not idiotic reasons.

If you have Internet, you will be able to play the same way as before.

If you don't have Internet then I would worry more about getting Internet than actually playing SC2.

Again no disrespect intended here but If you are on college and if your college doesn't have internet, then blame your college, not Blizzard.

It was not mine, nor theirs, it was an internet where we used to go to play so I don't have the slightest idea... Spawn maybe...
it was so long ago... If I remember well... internet connection used to be even more expensive than it its nowadays... so we payed less for LAN gaming, besides of that, I was with my friends, it was an easy way to play with them...
Those days I didn't even had a computer with internet...
Now I have... but I'll miss those days a lot...

Plus, most of those people don't even know what a computer is.

And don't forget that the college excuse also covers poor quality internet coverage (if any coverage at all) in dorms and apartments. I've got a friend who is renting living space in a duplex of a high-end neigborhood development for $700 a month -- which was a friggin' steal of a deal -- and the internet is as slow as shit moving uphill.

Now just imagine if he had rented a mid- to low-end apartment...

1) They better fix any lag issues with Bnet 2. Thats a whole different problem.

Again no disrespect intended here but If you are on college and if your college doesn't have internet, then blame your college, not Blizzard.

Valve and Stardock are dealing with the piracy issue exceedingly well, and they haven't had to take LAN out to do it. Why? Because they are smart and actually care about their customers. There is absolutely NO REASON to take out LAN in order to fight piracy. Piracy can, and has, been fought successfully with other methods.

And I have an awesome internet connection too, but this still ticks me off. Why? Because I play almost all my MP games with my wife, whose computer is exactly four feet away from mine...on a gigabit router.

When I go to my quarterly LAN party, we all play...on a gigabit router. Why in HEAVEN'S NAME would ten people want to connect...TO THE INTERNET...in order to connect to computers that are already hooked up behind a gigabit router? The answer: we don't want to, we don't need to, and there is no reason for it.

So far nothing they have shown about Bnet 2 has been worth removing LAN. If they can come up with something better, I will listen. But it will have to be a darn good something.

The only thing that can possibly redeem them would be if you were required to start the game over battle net but it somehow detected that you are on a LAN together and then used that connection for game, if you understand what I'm saying.

If they pulled that off, I would forgive them. Such a route is not actually impossible, shifting server connections and all that. It would be tricky to work, but hey, if that's what the delay is for...

If they really -can- show something worthwhile, I can forgive them. But so far nothing they have shown can even compare with Steam, and Steam gives me LAN. It's like we're taking four steps backwards, when Bnet 2 is supposed to be the "next best thing."

C'mon Blizzard, dazzle us with something awesome!

This is already how b.net for WC3 works... unless I'm mistaken with something else.

Uhm, have you been PLAYING PC games for the last, oh ten years? Cuz I have. RTS games since Age of Empires, heck, since Command & Conquer, had rudimentary LAN ability. When was the last time you used Steam? Since about midway through last year (or even before that, I can't remember) there was an update where games are automatically setup to be used offline. Piece of cake. Once they're downloaded, you can go offline with them. I do it all the time.

Also, Bnet 2 isn't a game either, so I really don't understand your reasoning. Bnet 2 does not support LAN play. The games designed to use Bnet 2, such as D3 and SC2, do not support LAN play.

Just about every single game released on Steam, certainly the big-ticket Valve games, support LAN. Why? Because Steam supports LAN play.

So tell me again how Bnet 2 is ahead of Steam?

Alright folks, first of all, using your own experience with LAN as some sort of justification in your argument is pure... bullshit.

I've never given a damn about LAN and neither have any of my friends. Oh yes, let me use that as a justification as to why LAN doesn't matter. What, are you going to tell me I'm a deprived child who doesn't know anything about PC gaming next?

Second of all, Blizzard has already said they plan on including something to replace LAN, so quit crying about it until you actually see what they have for us.

Third, IIRC b.net for WC3 already detects when you're in the same network and enables LAN latency.

Lastly, I can't even begin to think how stupid some people can get through their anger. Blizzard, the company which is pushing for e-sports more than any gaming company I know, is going to sacrifice LAN so that gaming tournaments are not possible with the lag? Are you people smoking something or what is it?

Oh wait, one more thing, no matter what anyone says, Blizzard probably couldn't care less about the people who have issues with internet.

They said themselves they had more players on b.net than they do playing WoW. Yes, so whatever miniscule number of people who are crying about LAN plan to boycott the game, it won't make a difference. A company's number one priority is profit, and if Blizzard thinks this will bring them profit, there's no persauding them.

Well, actually i believe the No Lan decision its to stop tournaments Lan tournaments like koreans leagues and be able to control everything inside the game, so they can sell Promatches broadcast and earn proffits from everything, like sponsors and stuff...
If that happens i dont know if thats good or bad, i guess time will tell.
