It'd be interesting to see how much percent of revenue the English stream generates. Still no advertising on the English side of GSL strangely. Guess foreign companies feel reluctant to advertise on it. Link to the article with the info:

Actually, the new GSTL or Gom's new Team League tournament (Feb 7-10) has two options for their vod service now; $5 dollar ad-supported vods and the $10 dollar no-ads vods. I'm trying the ad-supported one just to see what type of ads will be on it. I'll most likely go back to the no-ad one for the next GSL, as I have a low tolerance for commercials.

That is perhaps one of the most "noob" things I've heard. Sorry for saying that. But it's true. No insult to you but if you've been a paying customer of Gom in the past then you would have noticed a long time ago. They've had the "no ads" and "with ads" thing since I started getting it in GSL2. With ads there's still no ads. Only the random Korean ads if you tune into the live free. Basically they set up the model expecting foreign advertisers but have not put any in to the actual stream like a short commercial break like they do with Korean ads. All they have that is close are the global companies like pepsi, gatorade, sony ericsson that also sponsor for the korean stream so you can see their logos at the studio. But other than that foreign advertising has basically been non-existant.

Really? This is the MOST noob thing you've heard? REALLY? Not the whole business argument between what's the best economic way to deploy viewer-ship for SCII? You are right, I had not noticed there were two versions this whole time and I have been a paying subscriber of the GSL since season 1. If that option has been there the whole time, I've always opted for the no-ads version. And you are also right that I have not noticed any ads up until this point. Are you being insulting? Absolutely.
I've been following SC since '96, addicted to the original for numerous years, and have been a casual fan of SCII since its release. I say casual because I simply don't have time to keep up with my hobby as much as I want as I have a family and work. If you have a point to make or wish to correct me, please do Jackhammer, but you do not have to be a jackass do it. Don't be "that guy" that hides behind the internet; show some respect for your fellow man.
Edit: Moreover, after actually looking at the GOM website, this no-ad/ad price difference version has been available for all of one season (the most recent Global SCII Jan season, not since S2 -- as you suggested). If you go to any of the Open League Seasons 1-3 and click on the Premium Zone, this no-ad/ad option is not apparent. So, I have not noticed this for all of one season...nice, dude.
Re: A Discussion Of Alternative GSL Steams/VoDs
Sorry then for offending you. The stream you've been watching is "with ads". They grey out and do not let you choose "no ads" because at this point they have no ads and they don't want to be accused of cheating people. So unless they found some foreign sponsors the "with ads" stream will be the same for GSTL. If somehow you've been paying for "no ads" you could probably ask for a refund of some kind. Check your purchase history on Gom account.
And I have found more info and it was GSL4 that started offering the option. Guess then you paid for GSL4 without looking at the payment options. From now on i guess you will read the payment page more carefully before clicking on a choice and paying. I apologise then to you a long paying customer of Gom who failed to read the payment page carefully. And no need to bring in how long you've been a fan etc. I never accused you of not being a fan for long or not being hardcore. All i accused you of was having a Gom account and being their customer and never noticing which stream you were paying for.
And yes the whole economic viewership thing was noob. But that's basically the whole purpose of this thread. It was started needing special permission to discuss viewership, illegal streams, etc. We're not insiders in the industry. Or ultra suave business people. We just gave our opinions on the issue raised by DSquid. And if it was noobish then that was expected. None of us work for Gom or a large SC2 tournament organiser.
Re: A Discussion Of Alternative GSL Steams/VoDs
It's fine Jackhammer-- believe it or not I'm not as pissed as I might seem, I just don't think that manner is called for on the internet even though it is as prevalent as it is everywhere.
You are also right that this was the point of the thread, though I've found that trying to change people's minds on certain subjects is fairly pointless. I think we both share the dream of SCII, and eSports in general, being more than what it is now and we both understand that it will take money via subscribers to do so.
And you're also right that I'm pretty damn lazy in reading what I'm paying all of $10 dollars for; GOM subsciption is very much an impulse buy for me (much like buying something in the checkout lane). I don't think much about it. ;)
